Spawn vs. Hellboy - Page 2

The Spawn cartoons are better than the movie but that's not saying a whole lot. Werewolf Girl, you should be able to find the Spawn Cartoon DVDs piled high in the Wal-mart shitty-movies-for-five-bucks bin.

This thread has been a learning experience. I've learned that the Spawn comics still have fans, that some people have managed to find good things in the Spawn film, and that he's even cooler than Batman!

Forgive my prickish tone, you can enjoy what you want, and I'm not here to win any arguments, I just want to lay down my two cents.

I've read only one Hellboy trade, and that's the 1st one, "Seed of Destruction". I can truly say, without a doubt in my mind, and w/ no antipathy, that one page of S.O.D. is better than any odd of issue of Spawn that I've ever chanced upon.
I never bothered to get to the theater for Hellboy, but I did listen to a good 6-7 minutes of awful dialogue while my nieces and nephews sat about, barely interested in the DVD my brother had rented for them.

I won't judge the entire film on that 6-7min., but from what my equally comic savvy friends told me, Hellboy falls short, and barely scratches the surface of S.O.D.

The Spawn movie? Really not worth the typing space. It's barely a film, and little more than a skidmark on my memory.
As Werewolf Girl mentioned, the Animated Series is a superior effort, until of course, it too ran out of steam...just like the comics.

"Oh Wanda, I miss you Wanda!"... "I think I'll lay about w/ bums and sulk....because I miss you Wanda!" This is only interrupted by "Kill! Kill! Kill!" "Fight! Fight! Fight!" "Contemplate! Contemplate! Contemplate!"

Over 100 issues later, he's still living w/ bums, still bemoaning the loss of Wanda, and still being a generally bland, and unlikeable character...but hey, the art is awesome right?

Spawn is a slacker superhero, perfect for the 90's, slap some flannel on him, and ship him to Seattle.

Hope I didn't offend anyone (though I know I did) but while I can perfectly see Spawn's character potential, and the defense of that potential, there is currently no writer worth two shits that is willing to exploit it.

Virtually every lamely written character, Witchblade, Superman, Iron Man (who may get a boost courtesy of Warren Ellis) and so on, is fully capable of being a great read and furthermore, an essential read; you just have to have the talent behind them that Spawn has almost never had.

A-ha! But the difference is now he's a soldier of Mother Nature, not Hell. See, things have happened! In your face!

Heh, this has turned into a fantastic thread. That was after all my evil plan. To get people posting a little. Dan before you dismiss my taste in film as horrific let me say that yeah Spawn has issues but still in all honesty I liked it alot better than Hellboy. I never said it's a great movie just a very enjoyable one for a Spawn fan. People like to diss McFarlane becasue he's bigger and more popular than the President of the UNited States but before all that he was a regular artist. Just a guy with an idea, a good one. I think some of the angst towards him is because he's inescapable. Familiararity breeds contempt and all.

Outstanding!

I'll be sure to ask McFarlane how he feels about this when I interview him in October.

For the record, I've always thought McFarlane was a mediocre artist and a terrible writer. Even before he got big. I mean.. did you READ that Spider-Man series they let him write? Atrocious. And Mary Jane constantly looked like she'd been beaten in the face with a brick.

And the much-touted animated series?

Overloved.

I think we're all neglecting the real question, though:

Who is totally sweeter, Cyber Force or Shadowhawk?
Youngblood was totally the sweetest, Reg. Hands Down.

Oh, totally. The way nobody had feet was fucking phenomenal.

Yeah well that's not hard these days though, is it?

*Ouch* topical humour....

to the person who gave me that rep point, i do like hellboy! much more than i like spawn, the truth is, and hellboy fans know this, that hellboy isn't AMAZINGLY strong, sure, he is pretty strong, but when he took on savage dragon he got his but whipped, because dragon can lift approximately 340 tonnes.

i think in reality spawn would win because of the dark powers he possesses.

but as two movies, there is no contest, spawn the movie is shit, hellboy is excellent. the only redeemable thing about spawn the movie is the soundtrack.

I t doesn't matter how much money Todd's got in the bank. It doesn't matter how much you like the character, or the concept or lousy art. He makes shitty comics. He's the four color Paul W.S. Anderson.

Spawn animated series better? At least the movie ended within 2 hours.
