BLADE TRINITY Discussion

Thread Starter
Didn't see a thread on this, so I thought I'd start one. I was sent a link for the trailer to the movie White Noise, which I put in a thread on the main forum, and after I watched it, I stumbled across a trailer for Blade Trinity. Sorry if it's been put somewhere on the site before, but I couldn't find it anywhere, so here it is.

LINK

I think it looks pretty cool. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Jessica Biel is very attractive. Nice.
This is my most anticipated movie of the rest of the year. Loved the first 2 and this one looks like alot of fun, and has its own flavor, like the last 2. Im there first day it opens.

So, now I notice that there is a link on the front page to the trailer for this movie. I apologize for my redundancy. My bad.

We can still have a "focused film discussion" about this flick in this thread, though.
While I thought the first two blade flicks were only okay, I must say I'm looking forward to this one.... mainly because of Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds. I've liked Reynolds for a while now as a comedic actor (great appearance in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle), but I've always thought he could do more than just that. So hopefully this flick will lead to him being a more mainstream guy (kinda like how Tom Jane should've benefitted from Punisher and yet didn't because it was a bad movie).

Also, can't complain about Biel being in it. Don't think she's a particularly strong actress, but gotta love the eye candy, right?
This is the last of the most anticipated movies in 04 for me. I have high hopes. Snipes and Goyer know the character and will stay true to it. As well as pushing this to go even farther. Honestly i'm not sure about Reynolds and Biel. They might be young and attractive but i've yet to see where they belong in this kind of film. Seem more like X-Men dropouts at this point.

Really psyched and amped to see it. Loved the first one and enjoyed the 2nd. I'd like to see them complete the trilogy with grand style.
i watched the trailer the other day, it seemed to be they were pushing Triple H as the main villian, wasnt sure what to make of it to be honest.
What trailer did you see? The Official trailer that shows Triple H only once or twice, or the WWE(?) trailer that makes a BIG deal out of Triple H? That trailer was designed for wrestling fans in particular.
I saw one linked from the wwe website, didnt know there was a different one. I have to admit all i know of the film is from that trailer, is there another villian in the movie?

Dracula looks funny! the fun level of this film just went up several notches for me.
He's purple and neon blue? And where are his gold pimp chains that we saw in the trailer?
I am so looking forward to this movie. Like it was previously said, Reynolds could be a good fit in this. And from what I hear, he steals every scene he is in.
Dracula looks...well, he looks different from any other visualization I have seen. The demon look is kinda cool but the bright colors? It almost seems like some kind of Tron demon with the blue "lighting" on his chest and arms. Well, I have trust in Goyer and I'm sure it will be pulled off well.
The film has only been rated a 15 here in the UK, the previous 2 were 18s.
I was totally surprised when I enjoyed Blade I and II. I thought they were going to suck but I decided to be nice and watch them with Dave. Imagine my horror when - gasp! - I liked them both! Looking forward to the screening tonight (thank you Nick!).
Going to go see this tonight courtesy of Mr. Nunz. I'll let you guys know how it went down.

I never caught the first film until it was on TV. I thought it was okay, but more than a little silly. I've never been a fan of what I call "combat" vampires, but for what they had to work with they did an okay job. I never saw part 2.

But, hey, here's hoping it will be a fun ride. It's got an R rating so I at least am hoping for some good violence.
See part 2 Werbal hope you enjoy it.
Complete bullshit, aside from Reynolds. Just awful writing, story, direction, effects and acting all around. It's basically a 30-minute TV episode mistakenly expanded to 90-minutes by adding pointless slo-mo walking shots, flunkie fight MONTAGES, ridiculous iPod product placement, and lengthy scenes of Snipes and Biel putting on armor, practicing their aim and loading weapons.
Dammit this sucks. Knowing that you love the first two films I know you get the series. Depressing to think they messed the last installment up. I was hoping Goyer had something good up his sleeve for this one. I'm still going to see this and I hope you're wrong Micah but I bet you're right.
It's hard to believe seeing as how Goyer wrote the first two, but he fucks up everything that went right with those films and that is good about Blade. Whistler being the heart of the films? Not anymore. Now, no one is. Cool, hyperspeed, physics-defying action that ups the ante in each installment? Nope. Just fights that were pretty much Xeroxed from the first two. An interesting villain with a great scheme for how to wipe out humanity? Nope. Just 2 lame villains with underexplored backstories. Blade was never less essential or bored than he is here. And all of the mythology of the first two films with the organized vampires and their councils, politics, and family dynasties? Replaced by Gen-Y Underworld rejects shuffling from location to location with nothing to do.

Everyone gets to see this FOR FREE. It's hilarious.

Good god ouch. Yeah this one is really going to hurt. What the hell was Goyer thinking? Sounds like they rushed the script instead of honing it.

Then Goyer was talking about returning this one to more of some of the comedic tone that Norrington took with the 1st one. Sounds like he missed the boat there as far as Norrington's humor which was much more dark. This one seems more obvious and in your face.

If there was one thing that I think people overlooked about the first two films it was how wonderfully drawn the villains were. Deacon Frost and Nomak both had arcs where by the end of both films they would reach Blade and we as an audience couldn't wait to see the head to head collision. Looks like they screwed that up here too.
Oh and i think Goyer said they didn't really follow the original script as closely as the first two. Which is weird, since he was in complete control of this movie.
As far as humor, Reynolds is incredibly funny, but he's not a character as much as he is a collection of witty comebacks and bizarrely funny observations. For all of the muscle they had him pack on, the only fights he ever does not get his ass completely kicked in are against human flunkies. Triple H beats the crap out of him. Parker Posey beats the crap out of him. He runs from vampire DOGS. What the fuck kind of Nightstalker is this guy? Even in his big entrance into the film, he starts getting his ass handed to him in about 10 seconds. And it's not like the movie is even really aware of how useless he is and makes a joke out of it.
A shame, I had hopes this would be a cut above, especially after a compelling character piece like Zig Zag.
Blade Trinity is complete cotton candy goodness. Everyone knew the movie was action fun and went with it. I loved the indy actors in it, specifically Eric Bogosian and Parker Posey. That was frickin' hilarious.
Reynolds is great as a sarcastic asshole with some wonderful fanservice moments.
7th Heaven girl had nothing to do but fight and look pretty. That was fun. Looks like with this and her other projects she's shaping up to be the next big action "thang."
Wesley Snipes did his job. Not much to him.
The "Use it" scene was my favorite. That's what directors always tell their actors. "Use it." Hilarious.
I thought the movie was alright. It was much funnier than the others. I’m not sure if this is a good thing, since I never looked at the Blade movies as being my one stop shop for comic genius. I was also put off by the blatant and frequently repeated Apple product placements. It seemed that there were some story arcs that were incomplete or only hinted at. I don’t know if that was writing or editing. Blade did kind of seemed bored with the whole thing and there wasn’t much cohesiveness between either the good guys or the bad guys. I did have about three moments where “Montage” from “Team America” started playing in my head. The set piece fight scenes were ok, though. I still think it is worthy of a $4 matinee viewing.

I just wrote a long ass review but it got erased when I tried to post it. Fuck that. Here's the Great, Good, and Bad.

GREAT
Ryan Reynolds as Hannibal King

GOOD
Some of the fight scenes
Parker Posey certainly LOOKS like a vampire
Funny scene with Dracula in goth store
Overall, I was not bored

BAD
Too many worthless characters
Not enough Blade, Whistler, or King
ABAGAIL! Sexy chick with arrows does NOT good movie make!
Dracula as monster - Looks like Predator, Darkness from Legend, and Power Ranger villain hybrid
Dracula as human - Looks like wannabe Henry Rollins
Dracula as character - What's with all the non-scary Draculas this year?
Vampire final solution - Not nearly as creative or shocking as it should have been
TOO MANY WORTHLESS CHARACTERS!!!

The film managed to hold my interest despite it's various problems. But then, I'm not what you'd consider a fan of the series, so I'm probably holding this flick to a lesser standard than others might.

I'd give it a 5.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.
I think you have to go into the movie recognizing it for what it is - a fun ride with not that much depth or insight into the mysteries of life. I really enjoyed it; in fact, I think it might be my favorite of all 3. I thought the worst part was Parker Posey. I usually love her but good god did she suck in this role. I don't know if her fangs didn't fit right or if it was bad direction or what but she was awful. I rather enjoy ass-kickery in montages with loud techno music but I did think the whole iPod "she's making a playlist for hunting" was silly. I loved King's one-liners - where else can you use BOTH c-words and a force of nature in ONE insult?? All in all a good time - thanks Nick for the pass!

Yeah, but it still could have (and SHOULD) have been a much more competent picture.
I don't understand this "Aw, cmon...it's a fun amusement park ride!" defense for this film. Even amusement park rides need to make sense. The Cyclone rollercoaster is a lot less enjoyable when it moves at the speed of molasses for half the ride, does the most predictable of loops over and over, and gives you more laughs (intentional and unintentional) than thrills.

Even as disposable entertainment, it's an incredibly shoddy film. Certainly not theatrical quality.
Werbel hwo were he fights shot? Were the visable like the first 2wo blade movies or some type of edited mess?
I have not seen this yet, but I can't believe that this movie is getting ripped on so hard core all of the sudden, and yet some of these same people have defended National Treasure as a "fun mindless adventure" or "enjoyable cinematic junk food" or to quote The Nunz' "Completely brainless fun." So, National Treasure is good brainless fun, and this isn't? HMMMM, personally I am skeptical about some of these opinions because I thought National Treasure was extremely bland, bad and boring. Well I look forward to making up my own mind.
As well you should, but for the record, I never saw and never wanted to see National Treasure. And while I can imagine it being worse than Blade: Trinity, I'd prefer not to.
Well if Harry is right then I am gonna be fricking pissed.. F-Goyer for not knowing how to "film" a fight scene, the first 2wo movies were shot SO well in terms of seeing what was going on with the fist-a-cuffs. I am still there with Bells on but my biggest fear seems to have been true.

Quote:
He has no great fight scene in the film, simply because the action is so chop-chop in terms of quick cut, that you never pull back and see the fight, which is the best way to shoot Wesley – to show off his very real physical talents. Or at least as he exhibited in the first two films.
BASTARDS!
Again, I have not yet seen this but I thought that fight clip on Yahoo was pretty freaking awesome. Looked fine to me.
Harry carries no pull for me. Micah's been a true fan of the series and knows the deal. This just doesn't sound good at all.
I was crushed when I went to see Blade: Trinity yesterday (after having been hooked up with the tickets by CHUD- thanks Nick), after a whole two hour drive thanks mostly to nasty traffic, and after waiting in line for an hour - "The theater is full. Blade: Trinity is sold out folks, sorry." FUUUUUUCK! My contempt was to the point of yelling out "this is bullshit!" Why are SO many tickets given out (more than half the people there were sent home Blade-less), if there's not enough seats to accomodate? Fack. And I couldn't get my friends to watch Alexander. And on the way home- POP- flat tire. What a piece of shit day...

12/3/04

We're hearing from our sources that Blade: Trinity director David Goyer reportedly plans 2 versions of the film for the eventual DVD release - a theatrical version and an 11-minute longer director's cut featuring a darker, alternate ending to the film. Blade: Trinity opens on 12/8 in theaters.

Stay tuned...

From Devin's review:
"The real main focus of the film is the Nightstalkers, a group that feels so much like a comic book that they could become the way Marvel makes a successful series out of Blade finally."
They did try about twelve years ago. That's Blade with some kind of vampire and Johnny Blaze (sans the Ghost Rider persona). It flopped along with the solo Morbius comic.

David Goyer is not an action director. Someone must have told him that visual coherence or establishing action geography is so 20th century, since most of the fight scenes make no sense. They’re dippily energetic, though, even if I never quite understood what was happening with certain weapons or why certain vamps got dusted.
GREAT!!!!

Yeah that's where Goyer took the name from. He's talking about making a comic based on the movie Nightstalkers, which are totally different from that comic. But it probably won't happen, since Marvel can't even make a comic based on the BLADE character that lasts more than 2 issues. It's always some half assed mix of the original Marvel Blade and the movie Blade.
Fincher was going to direct the 1st Blade? Oh if only it were so...
Oh yeah. It's definitely the worst one. I didn't hate it, though.

It's a big step down from the first two. They should have gotten a better director. The whole thing looks kind of amateurish. And when it doesn't look amateurish, it's just copying looks from the previous movies. The fights have nothing that stand out.

And what the hell happened to the effects? Aside from the shitty fight in front of the lights in BLADE II, the effects were very good. In Trinity, everything looks off. The ashings, the old reaper effect, even simple things like 'BLade jumps in front of a green screen' look like crap.

Reynolds is funny at times, but can't save the movie. Wesley seems "off" a lot, like his vampire teeth are getting in the way. HHH was ok. Parker Posey acted like a heroin addict. Excuse my language, but Dracula SUCKED. What a waste. WHy the hell did he run from BLADE? He's Dracula. Then he grabs a baby for some reason. His Creature form was pretty laughable. He has a Gigantic Head, he's NEON PURPLE, and he's wearing leather pants and a gold chain.
It's the lesser of the three, but still good fun. Unlike wadew, I felt the FX were a leap above those in Blade II. If Guillermo Del Toro had returned to the helm, they may have had something. I also felt they missed a huge opportunity with Dracula. Call me crazy, but as long as he was gone and with the changed world, I think they had an opportunity to make him a sympathetic villain.

The fact that he was wearing a crucifix was nifty, though.
Worse of the three? Yes. Entertaining to watch? Yes. It's got it's share of good moments, but it has it's share of god-awful moments to even them out (everything with Parker Posey).

I didn't mind the guy they picked for Dracula, that was an interesting choice and it would have been nice to see a 'new' Dracula, but putting him in leather pants and an open shirt was too much. Looked too....gay to be honest. I'm no hompohobe, but it's hard to be intimidated by someone dressed so camp.

The fights, well they were pretty good. Occasionally too choreographed and slow and occasionally too hyper edited, they aren't as good as the fights from the first two, but the shaky-cam is nowhere near as bad as say Chronicles of Riddick or Bourne Supremacy. Sometimes the camera is panned out and still showing you the action, sometimes it's up close shaking all over, but there were only one or two moments where it was too much and I had no idea how a vamp had died. Pretty good to be honest, Reynolds certainly saved the picture and I have nothing to add about his performance except his actual character is weak (in fighting terms).

My biggest problem was that it didn't feel 'Blade', after a great opening action scene it just wasn't dark enough. The rest of the film wasn't as gritty. I definitely enjoyed watching it, and I'll definitely pick it up on DVD. It's not great, merely good, but it's hardly awful and if you're even a passing fan of Blade then I'd have to recommend you check it out, you're almost certain to enjoy it on some level. Goyer isn't a great Director, but he's also not a bad one, he handles the film well enough and I hope that they make the future-set apocalypse film they had planned and get Del Toro back to end it on a high(er) note. There's still one shot of life left in this, I believe.
Bring back Guillermo Del Toro, please.

I will not even try to compare Goyer's direction to that of Del Toro or Norrington because it would simply be unfair, even if the film looks like a made for TV movie in virtually every department. What I'm pissed about is the script. Say what you will about Blade II's, you gotta admit that it was perfectly sound, structurally speaking. This one is all over the place, Goyer introduces a multitude of characters and plot points without developing a single one correctly. It's filled with incoherences, recycles a lot of stuff from the previous two and does not manage to create a single memorable moment or line of dialogue. The villains are the less charismatic the series have ever seen :Posey is awful, Triple H sits there looking dumb and Drake, despite Purcell's efforts, is terribly written to the point of nearly reaching Van Helsing levels of badness (seeing him walking around with his open shirt is certainly as ridiculous as "Ooooooh Gaaaaaabrieeeeeeel"). Reynolds has good comical tempo but most of his lines just aren't that funny and there's waaaaaaaaay too much of them (I'll admit to having a good laugh at his "fuck me sideways" and the dog scene), Biel is too stiff and I wanted to shove that fucking Ipod up her crack. As for Snipes, you can really see in his performance that he's defeated by a difficult shooting and the fact that his character is relegated to being a second fiddle in his own movie: after the first scene he doesn't even try to be charismatic anymore. Not gonna blame him for that though.

Now wether the film's failure is entirely Goyer's fault or because of the studio's interference in order to make Blade a more profitable franchise remains to be seen, but the fact is that it's a terrible movie, and not even worth being mentioned in the same breath as its predecessors. Del Toro having expressed interest in coming back to helm a fourth flick, I really hope it comes through because the series deserve a much much better send-off than this junk.
The Blade films are shitty action films, and I mean that as a compliment. This one was an entertaining romp... I think the reason why I don't like the second is because Guilermo's too good for the material.... while Goyer as a director shows all the earmarks of a Sam Firstenberg. That's fine. The plot's a little too complicated for it's own good (and for so little) but it helps keep everything busy and it allows Ryan Reynolds to be the star of the film, which is fine by me. Goyer has great ideas that he half delivers on, but during some of the lamer sections I was too busy thinking about the cool ideas this film sparked to complain much.

Anyone who complains about Biel's love of the Ipod... there's a famous Japanese character who can't see and could kill every motherfuckin' one of you. Complain about him.
I don't know, a lot of great ideas? I thought the Blood farm was a good idea, GOyer wanted to do that since the first movie. Other than that, nothing else really stood out.

my 2 cps

I just saw this tonight and I liked it. I don’t really see it as an affront to the other movies.
I think that Goyer did a very passable job directing. True it doesn’t have the same type of visual flare that the other movies had or even characters (and that is odd due being that he wrote/directed it) but it was still good. I mean if you compare it to a similar film say and I know this won’t be popular but take Resident Evil Apocalypse. Both for the most part first time directors and similar material (hey there action movie guys they are made to be shiny and go bang – some overcome that most don’t) I think that Trinity is the far superior movie. The fight scene complaints that some of you had I just didn’t. I had no trouble following the action unlike in RE:A where it WAS cut to shit and shot entirely too close. The iPod thing yeah so there was product placement but for me it worked, hey I listen to music while I play/work so why shouldn’t she?

Reynolds was good I liked him, but think that his character was a little and actually most of the characters underdeveloped especially the villains, either way I think his best line was the one about the Hello Kitty tattoo. And Biel was so hot like she seriously moved up a couple notches on the masturbatory fantasy list. She seemed a bit distanced I don’t know if that was intentional or not but it worked for me.

Aw fuck it I beginning to sound like a cheerleader.
I do agree about the soundtrack sucking for this though.
