So I've Decided to Get Engaged

I decided to take the plunge over the weekend and got engaged to my girlfriend. Since I don't know what would be interesting for everyone to know, I'll tell you some of the timeline because I think the typical Utah/LDS relationship timeline is much different from everyone else's

-I met her four and a half months ago.
-We're getting married in three and a half months

It seems like most of the stuff I've seen is about year long engagements or something like that. Of course, probably the biggest difference is that during your typical engagement, people have lots and lots of sex. We, on the other hand, haven't had and won't have sex until we're married. It's one of those personal belief things.

Anyway, I'm ecstatic about it and thought I'd let everyone know!

So you've met someone and within 8 months of that meeting, you're going to marry them. And you're not going to have sex until after the wedding.

Is this normal? It seems like a risky way to go.

Seems like a complicated plan to just have sex... Jeez, a hooker could potentially cost you less in the long run.

Just kidding. Congrats.

Sucker.

I knew my wife was the one after six weeks. That was 15 years ago.

Congratulations, Sorro!

...And, for when that sex life starts to slow down, I have two words for you: Leprechaun Costume!

I can't believe sorro posted something in this forum... shouldn't this be in the politics thread?

Congrats, sorro. You're not alone here. I got engaged last month. We had been dating about a year at the time. We plan a February or March wedding, but still haven't set an exact date yet. I'm with you on the personal beliefs about sex. I'm sure you know, but the engagement period can be a little difficult at times when you've made that kind of commitment. So far, so good, though.

Congratulations my friend...

Best of luck and let it be a blessed marriage.

I've been with my girl for 5 years and I haven't popped the question. I figure I can string it along until she's on the verge of breaking up with me then do something foolishly romantic and it will make a good story for the little bastards and grand-bastards.

Congraulations and Good Luck!!

I don't think it's normal outside of our sub-culture. I've looked at a bunch of marriage timeline stuff and everything is based on a year long engagement. I think because of the whole not having sex aspect of pre-marital relations it probably speeds things along because there can be a lot of tension there. To be frank, this is actually a long courtship for some of the people I know. Why, there's one guy I know who met somebody and 2 dates (and 9 days) later they were engaged. Of course, that's an extreme - but he's been happliy married for over 30 years. There's something to be said for just knowing that that's the person you're going to marry.

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Best wishes, sorro. And not to be nosy, but since you mentioned both Utah and a sub-culture of sorts, are you Mormon?
If you are Mormon, I understand it's common to have large families.

My advice, go ahead and have that large family, just

WAIT A YEAR, AT LEAST!!!

Trust me, if you're waiting to have sex until after, you would be wise to start the family later (depending on biological clocks, and all) Have some fun!

It's not nosy at all. Yes, I'm a Mormon, and yes, we will be waiting a year before having kids. As far as a large family, I don't know if this is large or not, but we're planning on having 4 kids. That's small to me, but it's above the national average, so I guess it's big.
