MYTHBUSTERS on Discovery

Thread Starter
I saw this show advertised on my TiVo and it sounded intriguing, so I tuned in last week. Supposedly, it's already in its 2nd season, but this is the first I have heard of it.

http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/

Anyway, the show features two SFX experts[/url] who are out to prove or disprove myths on everything from ice bullets to lawn-chair balloons. So far, I have seen 3 episodes. They are fairly entertaining, especially if you like science experiments, because that is what they are when you get down to it.

Probably the most useful myth I've seen them prove was the poppy seed/drug test. Both Adam and Jamie ate copious amounts of poppy seed cake and bagels and then tested themselves over half a day. Anyway, they tested positive the entire day, as poppy seeds somehow secrete opiates into the body. So, if you know you are going to receive a drug test at work, its a good idea not to eat anything with poppy seeds in it, or else there's a very good chance you will test postive.

Supposedly... yeah it's a huge cover-up , then again when has the Discovery Channel ever not lied to us?
My wife and I both love this show, but they have a nasty habit of repackaging bits into "new" episodes that are really just three tests from three other shows in one.

The chicken cannon is still my favorite, if only because it looks like they had so much fun doing it. I mean, where else can you get paid to build a cannon and fire chickens at something?
Love this show. They do test myths that are usefiul, but often they test things because it'll be fun to blow up things. The chicken cannon being great example. When is a frozen chicken ever going to "fly" into an airplane window?

I also like the one where they tested the urban legend that if you fart while taking a poop and then light a cigareete, you can propel yourself off the toilet. Basically, they just ended up setting the plastic dummy's pants on fire.

The other really cool one I like was when they tested the myth about "magic bullets,"something that would melt or disperse leaving no trace behind. They tested all sorts of stuff, such as ice or sandwhich meat, but they proved not stable enough to really penetrate skin. The ice melted and the meat sprayed. They even made a "gun" out of an umbrella so that they could get within point blank range. In this case, the magic bullets did penetrate the skin. But they had to be rerally close to the victim, so if the victim survived they'd know exactly who shot them.

The cool thing about that episode is they talked to an expert on the JFK case to discuss the theory that JFK got shot by a magic bullet, . The guy mentioned that the government did look into that theory and found it not to be the case. However, that was some time ago before recent technology. He said they wanted to test again, but they couldn't because JFK's brain was missing from the national archives. If that's not a conspiracy, I don't know what is. How do you lose a dead president's brain?!

Anyway, this a really fun show.

Great show! Adam really cracks me up.

I found it amusing that along with yesterday's chicken cannon, they did the miracle bullet, first ice and then groundbeef. Why is this amusing? Because later that night, the CSI rerun on SPIKE had a murder weapon that fired frozen ground beef bullets. Coincidence...? Of course, but still neat.

By the way, have you ever seen two people who look more like brothers but aren't? I could've sworn they were brothers, but they have different last names.

The science department at my high school had the season DVDs, and whenever the lower classes were doing the state-mandated standarized tests during physics class, they would stick all the seniors into one classroom and let us watch Jamie and Adam blow shit up for an hour. Fun times.
The episode when they try to simulate the rear axle of the cop car being pulled out from being chained to a phone pole a la "American Graffiti" was great too. I think they had more fun with the remote-controlled Police car than they had doing the experiment.

Also fun was the episode where they tried the urban legend of the "bullet used as fuse shoots man in the leg". They actually got it to work, but they had to seriously overload the electrical system in the truck.

And by the way, a duck's quack does indeed have an echo.
One of the few shows on my Tivo season pass listing. The perfect blend of educational info and blowing shit up.

There was an old thread about it somewhere, eaten by the search function apparently.
Is this the show where they tested that old tale about the car with a JATO rocket pack found in the side of a mountain in Arizona?
I like the one where they try to ignite gas fumes with a Cell Phone. Shit didn't even work. I almost told a gas station attendant that told me to hang up the phone while I was pumping gas, that he was an idiot. But, I just said, "ok I don't want to hurt others".
For those interested, Discovery is showing a new episode tonight at 9 pm where Jamie and Adam build comic book inspired gadgets. I'm expecting to see rocket cars, web shooters, and (hopefully) Kari in spandex.

Looks like you might get your wish.

That picture makes me wish I had a TV right now. I love this show. Although, I'm almost always annoyed by how flawed their scientific reasoning is, but they blow shit up!

I'm going to see the build team in person this weekend at Dragon*Con. Tory, Kari, and Grant will all be there.
Pretty entertaining episode. I actually enjoyed the test involving the Phantom's ring more then the Mythbusters attempting to build real versions of Batman's gadgets.

Martianman, do you know if they are just signing autographs or are they actually going to do some sort of demo involving inventions from the show?
I think both. They're listed in the "Walk of Fame" autograph line, and there's also tracks alluding to the fact that they'll be the guest speaker on the track. I believe one that I saw was at least an hour.

Grant and Jason from Ghost Hunters will also be there, and appear to be in multiple tracks all weekend long, in addition to the autograph session.
Jamie always kicks Adam's ass on the gadget-making competitions. It's sad.

The Phantom ring punch was the best bit of the show.

That's cool. If anything interesting happens, you'll have to fill the rest of us in what they do during the panel. Jamie and Adam were actually doing a presentation over at MIT a few months ago, but tickets sold out and I never got to see them.

A few tidbits from the track--things coming up this season include seeing if you can wakeboard behind a cruise ship, revisiting the myth of blowing a taxi over with a 747 engine (they used an actual 747 for it this time, and Tory said it was the most amazing thing he's ever witnessed), and they got a brand new dummy, aka Buster 3.0. They also said that just before flying out, Grant and Tory were testing myths involving things that stop peppers from burning your mouth, so they had spent hours with habenero peppers in their mouths, then tried toothpaste to get out the burning (which made it worse), then they ponied up, and flew out to Atlanta. That was the last thing they had "eaten", plus no sleep either. So they apologized if they seemed a bit wired. A new blooper tape was run, which was funny. I couldn't get my video camera stuff set up in time to record it, but I'm sure you'll see it soon. Also, it was mentioned that Kari is "off the market" as she's engaged.
I watched this regularly for a while. It got a bit repetitive after a while, and I stopped intentionally recording it. But after recently coming across a couple of episodes, I was hooked again. Considering the state of television these days, it's impossible to hate a show that spends so much time talking about science in an entertaining way.

And yes, the chicken cannon is a classic.

Well this they didn't need to test cause I know it's quite doable.

I used to work on a big ferry (later sold to be rebuilt as a cruiseship) as a waiter and each summer we had a few days where it was free to travel and among the fun stuff that took place was wakeboarding and waterskiing from behind the ferry. It really doesn't take that much speed.

Me meeting the build team? Plausible.

But somehow not Confirmed?

Cool Photo!

Please tell me your right hand is someplace interesting.

Love this show; in fact it’s the only thing I ever bother to watch on the Discovery channel.

Been catching a few older episodes while I'm convalescing and something struck me.

What the hell happened to Scottie? Both she and that contest winner just seem to disappear with no explanation.

Both apparently left for "personal reasons", but Scottie should be appearing in an episode this fall.

I have a strange crush on Kari, she's not stunning so it has to be because of all the geekery involved with the show.

But then again, I also have a crush on the girl from the Orbit gum commercials.

I think most of the male followers of the show would agree with you there.

Dude, you should have seen her co-hosting the costume contest with Grant. Wow, she let loose with a few comments that had me rolling. This one pair came out with these hugely colorful costumes and did some little dance, and when they left, Kari said, "I think I bought E from those guys one time back in the 90s at a rave." She kept saying over and over again, "I'm so fired." And she had such difficulty in pronouncing some of the names (especially regarding Star Wars and Anime) that she told Grant she was starting to lose her "geek cred".

Ain't a damn thing strange about it.

You're right! POST EDIT!

Edit: It was too late to edit my old post.

I've upgraded to just crust from "strange" crush.

Goddamn it. Why can't Safari automatically have spell check like Firefox?
New episode tonight. Can a lead balloon really float?

Yeah, it's not as cool as the past few episodes, but I'm sure something blows up by the end of the show.
Anyone watch the James Bond themed episode from last week?

Pretty good overall. Although, they tried to crack a myth from Live and LEt Die that was never actually used in the movie. Can a electro-magnetic watch refelct a bullet?? Of course, it was busted, THAT was never going to work.
I like the Bond stuff so far, although I was disappointed to see that you can't blow up the propane tanks with a handgun. I wanted it to be REAL, dammit! Shooting it with the minigun was cool, though.

I'd like to see them try to duplicate the "mirror camouflage" Brosnan's Bond had. Just so they can say, "Yeah, this is total bullshit." Seriously though, I know they did a show with the ejector seat, but I'd like to see them try and do up a car with the standard spy gadgets like a smoke screen, oil slick, and machine gun headlights. That would be awesome.
I too was disappoined by the propane tank that didn't explode with gun shots. That was such a good scene from Casino Royale.

There's SOOOO many BOnd themed Myths that they could experiment with they could fill dozens of shows.!!
Most of the gadgets are generally fantasy aren't they? Laser watch and stuff like that. I'd be more surprised if the myths were proved real.

However, machine guns in cars, smokescreens, and oil slicks are pretty real it would seem to me. I mean a machine gun in a car wouldn't be that much than a remotely operated gun that only shoots straight. Making it small and have a decent amount of ammo is the issue. Hell, they made remotely operated guns in the show for other myths. Smokescreens would be some type of chemical that gets mixed that is laid out the back. And oil slicks is a remotely operated switch that opens a bottle or container that drops something slick down. All seems rather possible with the right engineering.
I love this show because they do all the stuff our minds only THINK of. They really act every childhood myth out. They're also really smart to figure all that stuff out. Now i think this is a bit more Reality TV than I Love NEW York lol

Or two episodes. The second James Bond episode airs tonight.

Wednesday night is a big deal for Mythbusters. They celebrate 100 episodes by trying to see if the gadgets from MacGyver actually work.

That would pretty much be the " holy of holies " for MythBusters. It should be a good one. If they could get Richard Dean Anderson on as part of the build team that would be good fun.
The only thing I really dont like about these themed episodes is Adam's insistence on dressing up and trying to act. Hes not especially good at it and it kills more time than is necessary.

And on a less annoying note, why cant they show actual clips from the movies they reference? After two Bond episodes they never showed one of the real scenes instead recreating them in storyboard format. It seems like if you base entire episodes around a specific show/movie then the least you can do is actually show the scenese in question. Or is it some bizarre matter of royalties? Im not really sure how that process works.
Still a cool episode the last one. I was surprised that a SAW (low caliber machine gun) could shoot right through a tree trunk 2 feet in diameter. I guess no more hiding behind trees when shot at. I was also quite surprised that Old Painless cut the entire tree in half in less than a minute. I knew they were powerful but DAMN!
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the Alaska episode. Jamie's reaction to the guy in the Yeti costume was priceless.
Anyone else catch the Nasa Moon landing mythbuster episode? it was really awsome and I was amazed how they got NASA to help them bust some of the conspiracy myths. I especially liked the photograph in the shadow myth because I never thought of it like that and of course it is sooooo simple.
Don't know if it's old news or what, but I thought this was interesting.

They did do an experiment to debunk the idea that RFID chips might explode (or heat up, or otherwise be affected) when under a CAT scan. But I guess that's about as far as they'll be allowed to go with them.

That was awsome! however the lady at the end made me want to never go to one of these things.
