Gossip: Just A Social Thing?

Why do people get so incensed when they find out this exists? It's a social thing, every group of people I've known and hung out with for extended periods of time has talked about the other people at some point. And I'm not talking about internet communites.

And when people do find out that you've talked about them "behind their back", they have the gall to act angry, even when you've stood there and watched them talk about other people. Even if what you've said about them has been EXACTLY what you've said to their face, albiet more candid.

I'm sorry, but anyone who is president of a peace/social justice organization and supports Bush is a fucking hypocrite and is recklessly naieve, and I will tell people what I think.

Anyway, this was kind of a worthless, crazy Rath style rant that you guys haven't seen in a while, but I'm interested in hearing what you think about gossip, or talking about people you know when they aren't there. It's a social thing, and we just need to get the fuck over it.

Or maybe it's the continual beatings I've gotten on CHUD that make me more jaded to this sort of thing. Whatever.

I mostly agree with you, it's natural for people to talk about other people when they aren't present. I mean, people are interesting and they are a good topic for discussion. However, there is a difference between just talking about people and insulting them. I think if you want to say anything hurtful you should either be brave enough to say it to someones face or just shut up about it, being nice to someones face and then bitching about them when they are gone makes you look like an asshole.

Yeah, but see, I TOLD the guy that much, and still, he's pissed that I said that to other people. Yeah, in that particular situation it was uncalled for and I've tried to make amends.

It's just that your post seems to be about gossip, but is actually just about you looking for validation for that particular opinion. Congratulations for taking a stand. It's too bad you apparently couldn't find anyone in these social groups you hang out with to agree with you.

Whatever. This thread was a bad idea; it's what I get for posting while tired and angry. Like I said, a classic "crazy Rath" style rant.

Oh please, the real truth is that people only get pissed off or inscensed when the gossip is about THEM.

Which is why, you should do what I do and never tell the same people the same life story. Then you can keep track of who blabs.
