Halo 2: Pre-Order Question(s)

Thread Starter
I haven't pre-ordered a game ever, that I recall. Given how huge this game is though (and my inability to pick it up until late Tuesday at the earliest), I'm tempted to.

1) Is there a deadline to placing a pre-order?

2) And more importantly, does it even do any good with a release this size? I'd hate to get locked into a purchase at a local shop, just to hear they ran out of copies and you have to wait a week for the next shipment. (Mind you I have no idea how a game store pre-orders, and perhaps this outcome is impossible, but I wanted to sure.)

I'm pretty sure my local game stores are still taking pre-orders. I'm also fairly certain that pre-ordered copies are distributed on a first come, first served basis. I'll call up a buddy of mine who is a manager at a GameStop and find out what the deal is. I know in the past a pre-order hasn't guaranteed there would be enough copies at the store location, though. Hopefully that has been addressed this time and stores will actually withhold copies for those with reservations.

You may also want to check and see if the store location you are going to will have a midnight sale. Back when I pre-ordered there apparently were no plans to do a midnight opening at the location I went to, but later on the store did arrange such an opening. Now I'll be one of several twitchy game geeks standing outside EB Games on Lawrenceville Highway in the middle of the night. I know the EB Games website lists all the locations that will be open at midnight, and I'm guessing GameStop is the same way.

Well bishop, I preorderd the game from my local gamestop in alhambra late september, and by that time All the collector's edition of the game (with bonus DVD footage and behind the scenes work) was already full, but they had plenty of GUARANTEED normal copies available for preorder.

At this point, depending on how heavily populated your area is, I would think you could still get your hands on the regular edition preorder.

I also made sure the gamestop guys weren't just going to take my money and then tell me on midnight november 9th that they ran out of copies. He said they are strictly taking preorders based on the amount of games the KNOW are being shipped to them.

Verbal probably has some more official word from the game retailers, but I think that policy seems logical at all the major gaming retailers

microsoft is actually keeping a close eye on preorder totals for all the retailers, which is entertaining, because microsoft is famous for short-shipping.

Pre-ordering just about guarantees you a copy at the store you make the reservation; just ask them if they'll definitely have enough. Frankly, I've hardly found pre-ordering necessary for any game in quite a while, so you really shouldn't have to worry about your store running out of reserved copies.

I pre-ordered my limited edition copy in mid-May from EBGames.com. They had a special offer at the time that gave you free 2-3 day shipping and something else.

so apparently there are 1.5 million recorded preorders for the game already...and from what i understand I think about 2 million copies of the game are being sent to retailers in the first shipment (part speculation and partly based on the bungie weekly updates). Soo, that leave about 500 K for the drop in shoppers. I never really reserve games either, but I didn't want to take chances come november 9th.

Does ebgames.com ship pre-ordered games early? I preordered from there with 1-one express delivery (free!). I'm expecting the game on the 10th but WANT the game on the 9th. Which day is more likely?

The only reason I ordered from ebgames is because they (at the time, anyway) promised to overnight mail the game on the 8th. I'll be picking up an extra copy for my cousin in Bosnia the night before, so either way I'm covered, but I'll be pissed just on general principles if the game doesn't arrive on the ninth.
