This riddle sounds familiar. No idea what the answer is, though.
Now I'm thinking that this is one of those pen over the sword things. So yeah I stick with E Gary Gygax (a writer or wordsmith).

I'll throw another one in here:

Who makes it, has no need of it. Who buys it, has no use for it. Who uses it can neither see nor feel it.

First was answered by Farce (the riddle and answer come from Hamlet). The second answer is a coffin.

#3. You have only one match on a freezing winter day, you enter a room which contains a lamp, a kerosene heater, and a wood burning stove. Which should you light first?
The match.

I checked. Actually, the correct answer would be "grave-digger," according to Hamlet. Gallows-maker was a good answer, but not the one the riddler was look for.
gallows maker is the right answer.

1 Clown.
What is he that builds stronger than either the mason, the
shipwright, or the carpenter?

2 Clown.
The gallows-maker; for that frame outlives a thousand tenants.

1 Clown.
I like thy wit well, in good faith: the gallows does well;
but how does it well? it does well to those that do ill: now,
thou dost ill to say the gallows is built stronger than the
church; argal, the gallows may do well to thee. To't again, come.

2 Clown.
Who builds stronger than a mason, a shipwright, or a carpenter?

1 Clown.
Ay, tell me that, and unyoke.

2 Clown.
Marry, now I can tell.

1 Clown.
To't.

2 Clown.
Mass, I cannot tell.

[Enter Hamlet and Horatio, at a distance.]

1 Clown. 70
Cudgel thy brains no more about it, for your dull ass will
not mend his pace with beating; and when you are asked this
question next, say 'a grave-maker;' the houses he makes last
till doomsday.
Go, get thee to Yaughan; fetch me a stoup of
liquor.

I believe 'grave-maker' or gravedigger is the actual right answer.
Wow. That was kind of...out there. Would've been nice had we had a general field to pull from. Sort of like "Test your skills! Shakespeare Quiz Time!"

But, hey...that's just me.

Their occupation is gravedigger, but I vaguely remember them being described as clowns (or fools) back in high school.

I mean, there are 3 different "credible" interpretations out right now for Beowulf...

a good answer, yes. But it does not satisfy the 2nd verse, nor in my opinion the 3rd.

also close...certainly on the right track.

The middle 2 paragraphs are really the key.

Psychoward101-I can PM you the answer if you want...but I was planning on giving this one another week or so if the answer isn't found sooner.

Since the thread seems to have died a quiet death, the answer to the above is(in Invisoscript): Paradox
