Interesting.

I'm warning you, if there's any kind of bad talk about MGS3, I'm fucking kicking your little bitch's ass.

Hahahaha.

More seriously, I figure this is gonna be a piece about the absolute onslaught of games that are unleashed upon us during the holiday season right?

Yep. I argue that this November is shaping up to be the single biggest month in gaming history, bar none.
Interesting point of view. Though I think there's certainly a lot to criticize about the fact that publishers tend to concentrate the release of their high profile games around Christmas making it fucking impossible for the gamer to choose (much less have time to play them all) when the rest of the year is nearly devoid of quality games.

Oh, definitely. That's one of the main bitching points in my article. It's ridiculous that I went months without purchasing a single game this summer, and now there is over $1,000 worth of software being released in November alone that I'm dying to play.

Is CHUD going to get the hookup on early review copies? I imagine that was the point of this whole 'writing game articles' thing :P

November 16th will be brutal. Metroid Prime 2, Metal Gear 3 (*high fives Blunt*), and that Half Life 2 thing. I'll probably play through HL2 first, then MGS3 and then MP2.

Yeah, it'd definitely be nice to get a few more review copies. And that's pretty much the point of these articles...prove to the studios that this isn't another "AICN Games" fad/failure, and maybe we'll get a little more respect in the future.
sounds good slater...so when you get that extra copy of half life 2, send it my way ok?
Yeah, November 16th will be bloodthristy, as in people actually murdering each other in stores to get to the front. Probably.

EDIT: There was an AICN Games? Good God.

Amen. Looking at a rough list, there's easily a dozen fucking games that are pretty much "must buy" for me, and then probably another dozen on the 'waiting for reviews' list.

And I still have to have money for the CHUD Christmas list gift...

You're making my wallet depressed. Where were these games when I was wasting all that disposable income on charity literacy programs last August?
Great article !
I'm glad I only have one system and my pc is outdated. This Novemeber is going to be REALLY hard on the wallet......
Loved the article, Slater. Not only do I have to suffer all the DVDs towards the end of the year, but now I have all these great fucking games to worry about too.

My wallet hates me.
Man, LotR: 3rd Age looks tasty...but Prince of Persia 2 looks kind of sweet too...and I might get that Halo game. Not really sure about that.

No, but seriously, I'm probably gonna be spending around $120 on Halo 2 and X-Box Live alone.

MGS3
Halo 2
GTA: SA
DOAU
KOTOR 2

The list grows day by day.

what day does MGS come out?
Great article Slater. I'm not too worried about November, though. For me, the list of games to purchase looks like:

Halo 2
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
A bunch of games I'll purchase once I've slowed down on Halo a bit. Probably in December.
Jesus there are a lot more games than I even thought on that list.

I am in the same boat though. Halo 2 purchase for the winter, and then I will dabble in other titles like POP2 later on in the year hopefully for a discounted or rental price.
I'm with you all the way about Sons of Liberty. The fact that that game exists makes any excitement I had for MGS3 null and void.

I'll be picking up Half Life 2, Prince of Persia, and maybe either Ratchet & Clank or Prime:Echoes. Good thing I've got more self control than you people.
I only own one console and I've got three purchases in November alone. It's hard to part with 150 bones when you are as frequently broke as I am. Add that to the couple of DVDs I'm looking at and there goes a couple hundred bucks. But there's always Xmas. As if I could wait.

reading the *gasp* yahoo preview for the nintendo ds raised my interest in the new experiment. namely their description of how you'd play the new metroid fps game using the digital pad for movement and the stylus to aim...add to that some wireless support for road trip gaming, you could have yourself some fun lan-style deathmatches on the go that would easily beat the snot out of similar experiences with say the n-gage.

No mention of world of warcraft or ghost recon 2 (for the pc) brings sadness to my heart....any plans on upgrading your rig or getting a new one to replace whatever toaster you have at the moment?

I didn't include Metroid Hunters in the preview just because it's going to be a hand-cramping, logistical nightmare. Try playing Game Boy Advance with one hand while writing down your grocery list with the other and you'll see what I mean. It's a concept that works perfectly in theory but never in practice. Which, I'm afraid, is going to describe a lot of upcoming DS releases.

It's sad how far down MGS3 is on my "must have" list.
I've wondered about which button would be the trigger/shoot key when both hands are being used....

fyi, as mentioned pc gamer is giving away a falcon computer (see half-life thread) and so is maximum pc (but it's not a falcon, or something).

Apparently, you've got to double-tap the touchscreen with the stylus to shoot. And that won't get old after ten hours of gaming or anything....
maybe there'll be some kind of nifty voice adapter where you can bark like a dog to shoot. that would be cool.
No love for Pirates 2? Damn.
Jesus, Slater. Excellent column. I would expect to see something like that as the central piece in a "special edition" gaming magazine.

Great read, Slater. I didn't know how many good games were coming out in November. Damn. I'm glad I only have one console right now. I'd have to start selling my internal organs if I owned anything more than my XBOX. Although, I think I'm just going to stick with that Halo 2 thing for while. I'll pick up some other ones later on. And I plan on getting a Gamecube sooner or later (hopefully sooner) and I'll be getting a couple of games to go with that. Can't wait for Christmas.
The new Game Informer has a Ratchet & Clank 3 review, 10 out of 10 without the multi-player even. Weapons have 5 upgrades each and it sounds like the Battle Arena has been upgraded quite a bit. They said game of the month and a good shot at game of the year.
Great article Slater. Having been offline for a few weeks, I don't what sucks more. Missing all the great articles, or having to catch up on all the great articles.
Thought you got killed in hurricane or something.
You would only be so lucky. Just haven't had time to visit my fav spot on the internet. Poolside has been keeping me occupied :-)

Actually, you use R to shoot and the bottom screen to look around. Double tap it to jump. The bottom screen is also a map, and where you switch guns. Gabe from Penny Arcade said that it felt a lot like a mouse, and that he was easily able to perform classic FPS maneuvers, like jumping in the air, spinning around, and shooting Tycho in the fucking face with relative ease. There's a 16 minute demonstration of the game on Gamespot that sold me on it. If you were just seeing the screen, you'd swear the guy was just playing an old PC FPS. It looks that much like he's moving with a mouse.

And mongycore, the DS has a built in mic and support for a headset mic, so you can scream "Fire" all you want.
