Scanners Love

Maybe this doesn't fit in CC...
but to me, Cronenberg's films (for the most part) are horror at its best. So anyway...

I just saw Scanners last nite for the first time and can't help but feel like it's the best godamn movie I've seen since... well, the last Cronenberg film I saw! I've seen videodrome, naked lunch, the fly, crash, scanners, the dead zone and the brood all for the first time with in the past month or so and have come to the conclusion that Cronenberg is my favorite film maker.

I love it. And I still have Dead Ringers, M. Butterfly (though I hear it's not great), Rabid and Shivers to go.

But anyway... Scanners. Jesus Christ.
Michael Ironside as Darryl Revok... man. I can't describe I how much I loved Ironside as Revok. Holy God! Why isn't Ironside in more films?! I hope he has a juicy role in the Machinist. His facial expressions in "the wrong volunteer" scene, as he scans that twitchy ConSec scanner.... almost turned me gay. Not really. But man... too cool.

And isn't the guy who plays Cameron the guy in Dumb and Dumber who's asking to use the pay phone and gets decked in the kisser by the guy with the ulcer? Well, he was cool as shit in this movie too.

What can I say about this film that hasn't been said before? What can I say that isn't good?
I dunno. But man... I love this fucking movie.

I loved the scene where the "good guy" scanners are all sharing a telepathic melding of minds (or whatever). I loved the use of fading out of "X" scanners face and fading into the face of whoever he/she was controlling/scanning. THe godamn ending! Oh my fucking lord. The only thing missing was my own head exploding as the credits rolled. The veins coming out of their arms and faces, the FUCKING FIRE in CAMERON's PALMS- YES!! The "wrong volunteer" scene, Revok's escape from ConSec... But man... alright. I've said enough.

So yeah... Scanners, baby. Scorchin'.
Sorry... but I had to gush about it somewhere.

Great, great movie.

If I ever knock up some girl, I'll be sure to dose her up with plenty of Effemerol. The world needs more malicious psychics.

I've never seen this one but one of these days I'll finally get around to it.

Ahh Scanners...great film, one of my fave Cronenberg films. I'm also very fond of Shivers and Rabid, if you liked Scanners you'll have fun with those.
There's just so many things that make his films so great. All of the outdoor scenes are usually filmed on cold, overcast days which makes it seem like Canada is some kind of wasteland totally devoid of warmth and sunlight. It really layers on a good feeling of hopelessness. His films are also, for lack of a better world, so venereal. All of his films, to some degree literally or figuratively, are about fucking.

Goddamn do I love me some motherfucking Cronenberg films.

I believe I read at imdb.com that Cronenberg wrote a couple, if not all, the sequels.
Anyone know if they're any good?

No he didn't write any of the sequels. IMDB just gives him credit for creating the characters. Of the sequels I've only seen the first and it was actually quite good. I've heard the third is really awful though.

Scanners is the film that got me into Cronenberg. Previously I had only seen The Fly (my father showed both that movie and Carpenter's The Thing to me at the age of 3!). Since I've seen (and bought) The Brood, the Dead Zone, Spider, and Videodrome. Most of the others are available at the local rental store (with the exceptions of Rabid and M. Butterfly), so I will hit those up eventually. So far I haven't seen any of his movies that I didn't like, so hopefully that trend will continue.

I've always been wary of renting any of the sequels to Scanners. Any opinions from those aside from MusashiY who have seen any of them?

Any movie where the main villain is named Darryl is awesome.

I too loved Scanners, and it was my first Cronenberg as well. I thought it was fantastic. I thought the script and the symbolism were incredible. It has some fantastic gore too, and it didn't hurt that it meant something. One thing I can say against it is the male lead is one of the stiffest, least convincing actors I've ever seen. It is a testament to the movie that it is really good despite having a terrible lead actor. Stephen Lack even had a cameo in Dead Ringers too. Cronenberg likes him for some reason. Michael Ironsides was great and deranged as Revok. I'll admit I didn't get the end at first (at the age of 15) but in subsequent viewings it's pretty clear what happened. As much as I enjoyed SPIDER, I wish Cronenberg would consider doing something else in the Videodrome/The Fly/Scanners/The Brood mode.

Great movie, to bad the sequels sucked. They should have been about a Scanners war. That could have been a great series.

The lead actor looks like and talks like he could be Mark Hamil's brother.

"I'm gonna suck your brain dry!" -- No one can sell a line like that like Michael Ironside.
