It's good practice for Nov. 2.

Unless you have soemthing really really interesting to say about hype, do the paper mario, but like have bowser review it, or sonic or, hey, what about master chief?
The article will end up being about Halo 2 anyway, won't it. you know it will.

I'll vote for paper Mario and put in a serious request for an article that asks 'where the fuck are the next generation of consoles! you bastards!'

Hype seems far more relevant for Nomvember 2nd, considering its a few days before the ultra-hyped Half-Life 2 and Halo 2, and a few days after the more subdued GTA:SA. And we've already had one RPG review.

I actually had a CHUD Games news article halfway written about what we can/should expect from the next generation of consoles...and then the latest issue of EGM arrived with a news story that covered the exact same territory. So I'm going to sit on that one for awhile.

But yeah, if anybody has suggestions or requests, toss 'em out there.

Not a topic suggestion as such, but since CHUD Games is here to stay, could it possibly get it's own page from the Main Menu, instead of sharing with the DVDs? Just an idea.

Ummm....ummmm....sorry. Can't choose. Both look good. Write both.

If your going to twist my arm, I'll take Hype.

with bards tale and a slew of other games that have come out....I'd really like to know if Paper Mario was worth the time & money until the november avalanche came down upon us. (that and I never bother with EGM anymore)

Absolutely.

As I see the Paper Mario series as a continuation of Mario RPG (one of the best SNES games ever), I'd certainly like to know how it holds up in comparison.

I'd like to see Paper Mario get some of the spotlight.

Are you really in a hurry to see the next generation? Have they really deprived us of them for too long? The PS2 isn't even four years old yet! I mean, I'm in no hurry to plop down multiple hundreds of dollars on new hardware and accessories. The Xbox and Gamecube produce graphics that are plenty good enough for me.

In an unreleated note, look for a semi-recurring games column from myself as well.

We don't need an article on the dangers of hype. The internet is littered with condemnation of hype. For once I'd like to see someone write about how much they love hype and how much better it makes everything.

When games devlopment starts getting hindered by the platform then yes, i think we should be ready for the next generation. this is already happening yet we haven't even heard an official peep about follow ups.

We shall have to see how the gameplay of san andreas holds up but that engine is over three years old now - it's not a question of polygons but of how interactive the environments can be, how smart and how numerous the AI can be, how adapatable the world can be to different styles of gameplay, how detailed the enivironments can be and so on.
if i find myself driving across ten minutes of empty, drab scrub land just to reach the next city in San Andreas i shall be calling for the next generation.
it might be nice if crashed cars and general carnage can be remembered more than a block away. ever cause a pile up, then turn around to find it suddenly gone? next generation please.
those tiny maps on Deus Ex 2? Xbox 2 please.

(by the way i hugely enjoyed DX2 and pant for San Andreas - i promise i'm not just jaded. honest.)

At some point in a console's life game development starts to exceed the consoles specifications but the money men still want another iteration of the franchise out before the console dies to take advantage of the user base - so you either get a regurgitation that sits snugly within the console's capabilities or a game that the system really can't handle. either way, this is the point that the console's games get boring and i start looking for the next generation. i think this time has come for this generation.

The playstation 2 can not handle half life 2 - we need the next generation.

Typically, a console is announced at the E3 the year before it's released, right? Since there was nothing this year, we probably shouldn't expect any new consoles til 2006.

I think this current generation deserves at least the standard 5 years (PS2 was 2000, Xbox and Cube were 2001 right?). Great games always come when a console has been out a long time, the developers become more experienced programming for them. Not rushing the next gen means they will be more powerful when they eventually come out, too.

Shader technology is advancing at such a rapid rate, I think it would be a bit premature to lock down specs now for any of the systems.

Yep i agree. there are those games like Yoshi's island or Gran Tourismo that could only have come about once the prgrammers had worked out how to use the system to it's full advantage (Gran Tourismo especially seemd like a generational leap just in one game).
but then there's Gran Tourismo 2, a game that really should have been on the next gen console and suffered for it, being not much more than GT 1.5 with much scrappier graphics and frame rate issues (from what i remember). when games like that come along you know the console is just being milked for it's installed base before it becomes comically obsolete.
The same goes for goldeneye and perfect dark - both great games, but the N64 really couldn't handle any more detail or complexity and perfect dark suffered for being squeezed onto the system.

I feel those defining games have come and gone on the PS2 - games like GTA, MSG2, Jak and Daxter (god it was pretty). and we're onto the 'milking the old hardware' games.

GTA San Andreas may well prove me entirely wrong though, and i will be extremely happy if it does.

edit: sorry, i'll add one more thing: technology is moving forwards blindingly fast all the time. when you upgrade your PC you just have to pick a date, pick a price and buy the best you can, knowing it'll be old technology at best within 6 months.

Though (according to the poll) it seems to be in the minority, I'm still gonna go with the Paper Mario review. I think the hype article could be put together with another topic to make a larger and more in depth editorial regarding games and the industry in general. Plus, we haven't had a full on review since Carl's look at Test Drive and that was almost a month ago.

EDIT: Nevermind, Slater! http://chud.com/dvd/283

Yeah, sorry.

If I can crank out this Salem's Lot DVD review, I'll do something for Paper Mario 2 too. If that doesn't happen, you should all still buy the game. It's the best RPG of the year.

Yup. I'm about 75% done and I can report the game is a barrel of fun.
