This is not the first time the system's done this with brand new games, either (previously, Burnout 3, Ninja Gaiden, KOTOR, and Doom 3 all gave me trouble on load up). And yes, that's even after running an optical disc cleaner through it. So, now I've gotta ask...does this happen regularly to everyone? Maybe not in newer models?
My friend bought his Xbox the day it came out and he has the same type of problems you mention here.

I, on the other hand, purchased my Xbox about a year later and have only experienced lockups on the rare occassion that I've pushed any of the GTA games to the limit.

Went to get the PC version on Tuesday. Much to my disappointment it's only available on DVD-ROM (which I don't have). I want to play this so bad, I might have to install one.

Did anyone in Vancouver pick this up yet ? I can't find a copy anywhere, apparently there was a problem in shipping for future shop AND eb stores...

A few questions...
-Is it just me or do the meals in the fast food places have different names now?
-I didn't see how you could save replays, can you?
-I had read about ads playing during custom soundtracks, but have yet to hear it. I assume that's what the "radio" setting is for, but no dice. Anyone know? Also is there anyway to change tracks? Or only playlists?
-the controls suck(see below). Wait that wasn't a question. The controls suck, don't they?

Can't change the controls this time around, but you get used to it quick.

A few things that genuinely irk me, however....

Of course there's gonna be an initial loading screen. And for what it's worth, it comes and goes a lot faster than the PS2 version.....but why do we need to see "Loading...." while I'm getting a haircut? Or when a new mission screen comes up?
I'm pretty much hating certain aspects of the controls, why they changed some of the stuff from III and Vice City I'll never understand. Drive by's are now an utter pain. They've switched around the lock on and fire buttons. I also read that flying with the new control scheme is even harder than it was before(it wasn't impossible, but it took a lot of getting used to on the PS2, especially the flying school stuff). Also using the R trigger to speedpedal on the bicycle is really going to cut into my cross country journeys(and my index finger, I biked across the whole map several times on the PS2 for the hell of it) I have lots of other nitpicks about the controls, but overall the game is so great they'll soon be forgotten... until I go back to III or VC, that is.

By the way, your quote at the bottom of your posts... if you're referring to the end of the Facility level, I did that for over an hour one time. Ahh the good old days...

In the start menu, check the "Load Game, Delete Game" section. It's the last option. Dunno how it works yet, though

They don't pop up as often as they do on regular radio, but listen to the radio long enough, you'll hear 'em.

And as much as I miss the L2 and R2 buttons when doing drive bys, using the black and white buttons to do it is a shitload more intuitive than using the directional pad like in the Double Pack.

Ok, so that's for the Xbox...any comments on the PC controls?

I played on PC all weekend and I'm still not used to the controls. It might be because I've been playing so much WoW, I haven't adjusted. Haven't gotten to any flyng missions yet so I can't really comment on those, but all the keys can be remapped and I have done so depending on the mission.

One complaint (and it's probably my fault for not setting the correct graphics settings) is sometimes, parts of people (sometimes the whole person) disappears. Doesn't matter if it during a cut-scene or playing. They phase out. Also sometimes the sound seems to get messed up and it sounds like people are talking in a steel barrel.

One of the nice things about the PC version of the game is that you can set up different controls for when you are on foot and when you are in a vehicle. I use Keyboard and mouse for foot, and joystick for vehicles.
BTW There seems to be a general consensus that the flying is the weakest part of the game, and they might have made a mistake by making the some of the flying missions Mandatory rather then optional.
The flying missions are the worst thing ever. It really comes down to the completely awful flight physics and controls. The objectives themselves aren't bad but the controls, sweet christmas, the controls...

oh, that's for the PS2 version, by the way. Although I'm sure they didn't do anything to improve the situation for other platforms.

Correct. The flying controls and physics for the Xbox version pretty much remain the same, aside from the exception of the white and black button for rudder control - which, to me, makes it all the more harder to fly.

Just something else to improve on for the next-gen GTA.

I was a hgue fan of Vice City on the PS2, but I am probably going to pick this game up for the Xbox this week.

I am pretty sure its going to be worth the money, but anyone regretting their purchase so far?

EDIT:

I picked it up...God DAMN this thing is huge!!! You truly have to play it to realize how large the game is. I just sat back for 4 hours and played it non stop. I decided to take a break at the low rider race mission becasue my low rider was too jacked up to drive straight.

Currently, I have an afro and joker glasses on making me look like the legendary "humpty hump" from digital underground. Great stuff so far. The controls are a bit wonky, and the camera during driving takes some time to get used to, but the targeting system works much better than it ever did in previous GTA games. This one should keep me busy for a while.

Pretty similar to GTA 3 and Vice City on the PC (WASD and mouse). You now hold the right mouse button to aim. Also, the camera seems a bit different (shittier IMO). However, when driving a land-based vehicle you can control the view with the mouse which is what I always do. You can't do this with planes and helicopters though and that's OK with planes but the helicopter camera is just abysmal (when hovering and turning you see the side of your 'copter and not your fucking target ARGHH). The camera seems to be based on your speed: if you're going fast and turning the camera will generally point in the direction you're going but if you're going slow or standing still it'll take a while to turn to the direction you're facing.

Still, the camera is just a minor niggle and overall the game is definitely worth buying for the PC. If anything, it's much easier to play thanks to the superior aiming control of the mighty keyboard/mouse combo (headshots and gas tanks, baby, headshots and gas tanks).

Well, damn...I bought the Xbox version Weds. Haven't had a chance to play it yet, though.

I still maintain that a zombie game with the GTA engine would be the greatest thing since sliced Jesus.

I totally agree, it wouldn't seem too difficult either it seems. If only there was a cheat code for everyone to shuffle after you trying to eat you.

The other day I got bored with missions and decided to wreak some havok. The chase ended up being a cheat-free 3 city extravaganza, using the railroad tracks as much as possible to get from place to place. When I finally got back into Los Santos my car caught fire and I took off on foot with 5 stars. So I'm getting the crap shot out of me and I'm pretty sure the end is near, when I happen to stumble across a basketball. What the hell I figure, I start shooting some hoops, with SWAT vans parked all around me. Thing is, they aren't shooting while I dribble and shoot, just screaming. As soon as the ball hit the ground though, it was a mad dash to pick it up as I got shot to shit. I repeated this for a while, if I stopped playing I was dead meat, so I milked it for all it was worth. Guess the SWAT guys in San Andreas are basketball fans...
I love this game.

Great story Nexus-6.

I am very concerned about GTA Liberty City Stories for PSP, i was really looking forward to it, but recently i tried to play GTA III on Xbox and my head almost exploded from the fact that i couldn't rotate the camera whenever i wanted like we're all now used to in San Andreas.

This made me think about GTA on PSP, we probably won't be able to rotate the camera around while on foot or in a vehicle, theres no second analog nub, i know they could designate two buttons or something but the game already uses every button on the PS2 and Xbox controllers all the time anyway.

I don't know if i'll be able to revert back to not being able look around easliy, and that sucks because i was really looking forward to GTA on PSP.

Just been replaying GTA: San Andreas.

Just bought Zero's shop and have been reintroduced to the goddamn RC strand of missions. Whoever designed this trio of evil is obviously Satan incarnate. I'm stuck on the second one, Supply Lines, as we speak...it's just not possible.
The final RC mission is a huge pain in the ass. After that, it's not too bad.

I've been replaying this myself. Just got done with the jetpack mission where you attack the train. Farthest I've ever got with this game...

That second one is a bitch. When I finally did it - I landed in the zone with nanoseconds to spare. Threre are some guides at Gamefaqs and such, but really you just have to find the best route yourself and just stick with it. It's the hardest mish in the game. But if you do it, his third and final RC mish is great fun.

As for saving, I've never run into problems.

The money cheat always comes in handy.

I still can't beat the mission where you parachute onto the rapper's house. I can easily get to the car chase and then they force you to use one of the worst vehicles in the game, quickly losing the main bad guy. What a joke.

I had the same problem. For one, the mission is too long for you not to be able to save in between.

As for the chase, you just have to drive slow and let him drive down into the city. Then get next to him and shoot at the car repeatedly until it blows up.

Another one of those missions that isn't fun... it's work.
