As long as you there is who geeks like to identify with, and there are no accuracy stipulations, you have to put Ash at the top of the list.

Geeky Livejournal girls practically base their whole persona off of Charlotte from "Lost in Translation."

Gene Loomis, shit yes. Definitly a top five choice for me.
Harvey Pekar - American Splendor
Charlie Kaufman - Adaptation
Ducky - Pretty in Pink

Hellooo! Think!

I can't imagine that anyone would like to identify with George McFly. Except for the screwing Lea Thompson part.
probably Evil Ed from Fright Night.
Barton Fink.

Well, he's my hero at least.

Ducky speaks for all of us!

I never watched it, but I know a lot of people who thought it was cool to be like the geek squad in X-Files.

Teddy Duchamp from Stand By Me
Edward Scissorhands
Eli from The Girl Next Door
Gary Oldman from State Of Grace

FRY - futurama - not exactly a movie..
I second Fry and also add Peter Griffin, although i expect we all want to be Stewie.

I also suggest Peter Venikman (sp) - well i always wanted to be him anyway
There are thousands of wannabie Spike and Angels out there
Wolverine
Spiderman/Peter Parker

to name a few
Jason Schwartzman's character from "I <3 Huckabees" will probably achieve cult geek love shortly.
That annoying girl from Ghost World,
King Kong,
Sam Gamgee,
anyone wearing a long coat and either shooting two guns at the same time or doing wire-fu. In slo-mo.

I think Egon is the more identifiable geek.

Yeah, Ray Stantz too.
Mine were always Gordie from Stand By Me and Ben from Explorers. Oddly enough, both films had a young River Phoenix in them and yet I never identified with him. But his Carl from Sneakers, definantly.

Did anybody else feel love for Ack Ack on One Crazy Summer but me?
Long Duck Dong

Dante

Banky

You guys are kind of missing the point of the thread. I'm not talking about the geek wish fufillment or power fantasies, I'm talking about the whole kind of "if you go to the movies long enough, you will see your story on screen." kind of identification.

The Stand By Me and Carl from Sneakers are both great choices, though.
I think Luke is a good one. Bored teenager, looking for excitement and adventure, unhappy with parental situation. Totally not a wish-fulfillment thing (I hate that phrase, such a media phrase).

Luke, conceded. Neo, Ash, Oldman in State of Grace, even the Dude....not so much.
I've lived out Say Anything, minus the nursing home audit.

1. Anyone from Star Wars

2. Ash

3. Tyler Durden

4. Anyone from Star Trek

5. The Dude

Wesley Wyndam-Price is the ultimate geek empowerment character arc. Lowly geek becomes valuable team member. Valuable Team Member becomes Go-To Guy, Go-To Guy becomes De Facto Leader, and earns Old Leaders respect by being willing to make The Hard Decisions. Loses the girl of his dreams to his best friend, and becomes Stoic as Fuck. Follows his gut, trying to the right thing to tragic ends. Is ostracized, Goes It Alone, and frighteningly becomes the uncompromising Bad Ass he he posed as when we re-met him. Under goes the classic Whedon Remdeption arc, and finally Gets the Girl, only to lose her to death. He eventually takes one for the team in one last act of heroism and is mourned by all.
I said Oldman from State of Grace because he's the crazy-ass grungy guy who always starts fights, always ends up in trouble that he needs people to help him out of, and is blindly loyal to friends.
Brodie Bruce and Shaun.
Robert Downey Jr.'s character in Back to School.
1) Ash
2) Neo
3) Kyle from terminator
4) John McClane
5) James Bond
Is anyone reading this thread before posting? It's geeks portrayed in films, not film characters that geeks wish they could be.

Someone mentioned Barton Fink. That's got to be number one. I think a lot of the characters played by Paul Giamatti would qualify in this category, especially Pekar, possibly his character from Sideways, which I haven't seen yet.

As far as The Big Lebowski goes, Donny is the biggest dork in that movie.
