Holy crap.
That looks like eight unbelievably insane movies!!!!!!
Lots of human action, I noticed, very minimal Godzilla. I suppose that's a good way to go if they want to attempt some semblance of seriousness.

That looks amazing, was all that footage from Godzilla? I'm sure some of the Kung-Fu was from a different film.
What was up with the people talking over it too...looked like it was part of that morning show that Takeshi Kitano hosts.

Does Beat Takeshi host a morning show? I thought they were mostly prime time or late night variety/talk show programs.
The non-kaiju action scenes look like cranked up kung fu eye candy. I'm giddy with anticipation. Hopefully the full trailer (from where these snippets were taken) will appear online soon.

That looks insane.
All Godzilla fans should check out this book.
It's a fantastic historical study of Godzilla that manages to be both a fun read and take the movies (or at least the kaiju phenomenon) seriously.
The author is a shameless Godzilla fan, and it comes across in the book.

That looks fucking awesome. Just a few months away now. Hopefully a cheaper HK, Korean, or R1 release will be available on DVD sooner than later.

as long as it makes more goddamn sense than Versus, i'll be happy. this clip looks badass though, a proper send-off for a screen legend. let's just hope godzilla final wars 2 isn't greenlit for 2006!

Some things about it I like alot, some things made me cringe, but at least they're doing something interesting with the franchise. I'm not a huge fan of Versus (although, oddly, my wife loves it), but I'm glad they're letting someone with a distinct style do his thing with it.

First reviews are coming in from the LA premiere.
Moriarty loves it.
Man, I can't wait for this. It sounds like Kitamura has really delivered the ultimate kaiju movie.

| I’ve seen a lot of truly great films this year... movies like THE INCREDIBLES or ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND or KINSEY or THE LIFE AQUATIC or SILMIDO or SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER... AND SPRING or BEFORE SUNSET. Those are lasting works of art, powerful films that say something about the human condition. And not one of them features Baby Godzilla driving a goddamn car. And that’s why GODZILLA: FINAL WARS earns a special place in my heart. It’s fun. Pure lunatic fun, every frame. Thank you, Toho. Thank you, Ryuhei Kitamura. Thank you, Tsutomo Kitigawa and Shogo Tomiyama and Eiichi Asada and Shinichi Wakasa. Thank you for taking me back to those Saturday afternoons where I first fell in love with these movies. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go build a city out of cardboard boxes. I have some buildings to stomp. |

More reviews,
"Just got back, myself. I won't go into great detail as others have, but my take is quite different.
In much the same way I enjoy films like SEA MONSTER or MEGALON, I enjoyed this one, almost despite myself. You put the elements that make up this whole on paper and it's easy to despise the parts individually: Minya waddling about at human size, lightning-quick battles with bare lip service paid to monsters like Hedorah, exceedingly campy sequences and dialogue... It's all true, it's all there.
However - these elements are intentional - the humor and homage are intertwined, and when viewed as a complete film, I had a great time. So did two of the three people I saw the film with. And it will carry forward, I think - some will enjoy it for what it is, others will be stopped by the thickness of Kumonga's webbing or the hilarity that is Minya attempting to steer a truck.
I'll just say, if you hated some of the Showa films - as I've said before, you won't subscribe to the campy, quirky and wildly eclectic humor of GFW. It's not a serious film and isn't meant to be taken as such. Liberties with characters and monsters will put off many fans, and amuse others. One thing does set this film apart, and that's the fact that whenever chuckles or laughter arose from the audience, they were all as intended. If this film is regarded by some as a joke, then at least it's a joke the makers were in on from the start."
Another,
"Godzilla – Final Wars is an adrenaline acid attack version of a showa film. the action is non-stop wall to wall music. the editing fast and furious, the camera angles are everywhere, upside, rightside, downside. the film is a simulacrum of post modern Hollywood in your face seen that plot before. you name the film it's here... matrix, id4, mi2, x-men, star wars... it's all there with a cup of Godzilla on the side.
It's a silver screen video game. Godzilla wages lighting fast attacks on wave after wave of monsters in various cities. GINO beams from the mother ship, does a 360 while he materializes. the rock music pounding. the only thing missing is " FIGHT!"
Gun play, blood, cuss words, martial arts, motorcycle city chases, music and more music, parallel monster fights with human fights, bullet time, sub-par effects...
It's not the best of the series, not the worst. it's another imagining of the genre. enjoy it, love it, hate it... Godzilla's been around 50 years and allowed generations of directors to give there take. this is not your father's Godzilla movie. actually, i'm not sure what it is... part video game, part music video. or simply another chapter in G's film history. "
Another,
"Ok, time for a different perspective on this film from me and KaijuHQ. We actually found the movie to be ENTERTAINING. And I stress that word because we walked away having had a good time watching the film. It wasn't the greatest, but it definately wasn't the worst either. There were a lot of things in the movie that really stood out as awesome or fun to watch, but there were also some things that literally had me shaking my head in my hands. Ok, the good stuff:
First, we really liked the entrances that the monsters had to the film. Those scenes looked as though they were focused on, because they were mostly built up well and the spfx were decent. Angilas and Rodan's openings were fun to watch. Angilas' ball attack, which is something that could have looked horrible, actually was pulled off really well. Rodan's opening scene, with his sonic attacks was something new to see and looked great as he destroyed New York.
We also liked the way some of the suits looked on screen. Godzilla moved really well, Kamikaras and Kumonga were well articulated, and Angilas we think stole the show.
One of my personal favorite things is when Godzilla stomps both of his feet into the ground, slams his tail in, and then rears back and charges up to launch a super beam up at the oncoming Monster X. A very good idea, and well executed in the movie.
There were some different things that happened in the monster fights that stood out, like when Godzilla blasts Gigan's whole head off.
The plot was at least existant. It wasn't hard to pick it up, which was a good thing because the editing was happening so fast that you didn't have time to think about the way the plot was unfolding.
Don Frye and Kazuki Kitamura (The X-alien leader guy) both stole the show. Don Frye, while not the greatest actor ever, had some hilarious lines that made him sound like a total bad @$$. Kazuki was outstanding in his role. He took it and ran with it, and was the perfect bad guy for this film. It's almost too bad they finally had such great human characters in a film that was struggling to hold together the monster plot.
And then the bad. Minya . . . dear lord, what were they thinking? These scenes were beyond bad. Minya did nothing for the film except bring it to a grinding halt every time he came on the screen.
There were definately some bad spfx throughout the whole film. Manda looked totally awesome as an anamatronic at first, but when he was done with CGI it looked absolutely aweful. Kumonga was a good marionette, but his webbing, as Greg pointed out, looked like a thick yellow string and somehow managed to turn into a large net. Kaiser Ghidorah was done very poorly. It was a good concept, and he had some interesting powers. He was clearly meant to be a super oponent for Godzilla, but the suit was ridiculous. It looked like it was put together with duct tape and a golden tarp. Pretty bad for the final ultimate monster for Godzilla to face. And of course there were plenty of things in the film that were unintentionally funny and got some laughs from the crowd.
Overall the film was basically just entertaining. Definately not worthy of Godzilla's 50th anniversary. We believe that Toho should've stuck with a director that they were using like Tezuka or Kaneko and spent more than one fricken year on the film. The film certainly had plot, but in the end they just need to spend more time on these films if people are going to respect them.
To sum it up, some people are really gonna like this movie, others are gonna hate it, and I am afraid that the majority are going to find it mediocre at best. Our advice, watch it and try to get whatever entertainment out of it that you can."
Another,
H"i guys. Well, saw just saw the movie. Listen, I am NOT a hard fan to satisfy by any means. I wanted not to believe any of the bad things I have heard about GFW. I went into this movie with an open mind. Well everything you have heard bad about GFW is true. I walked out of this movie tonight feeling so heart broken about this damn movie. This movie is BEYOND bad. The FX are bad and the score is horrendous. There is hardly any Emerson music in the movie which was probably embarassing to ELP, who were in attendance. The suits in this movie look every bit as bad as they look in pics. I am sorry to have to report this, and I should point out that this is strictly my feelings alone, but this movie is unbelievably bad. Minya is an utter embarrassment, and is human sized through most of the movie (even sitting in a truck with the boy and father that found him....with a seatbelt on). He grows big in the end and stops Godzilla from destroying the humans. Kaiser Ghidorah looks exactly like what we heard, two guys pulling the horse suit gag. The score was mostly techno and got on everyones nerves. There were more laughs than cheers from the audience. The biggest ovation came when Gino was killed. Hedorah is only on screen for less than a minute. He had no place in the movie. He is blasted out of the water by Godzilla's ray into a building, then Ebirah is blasted out too and lands on Hedorah stabbing him. That is it. Bear in mind that these fights just come out of nowhere."
Another,
"Where do I begin ? Well, I can tell you that MOST fans exiting had positive reviews. I definitely did not. The most obvious problem I had with the film were the CGI scenes. For instance Manda looked killer onscreen. UNTIL the CGI Manda looked Nintendo BAD. The overall SPFX looked rushed. Most of the time a Monster was hit by a missile, the explosions look absolutely cartoonish. Rodan had some cool scenes, but the CGI'd Rodan looked really fake, rushed CGI. A shame, because Rodan's NY attack had some good aspects to it. Minya was so bad. Cringeworthy bad. A Human sized Minya looked like something on a Saturday kiddie show. Kumonga looked pretty cool. BUT, his web looked like a thick yellow rope. In fact he shot webs out and suddenly the webs turned into a NET !! That was hard to look at. I think the Gotengo and the rest of the ships looked really cheap and unconvincing. They hardly had any detail. Certain shots brought Mogera in the Asteroid belt to mind. The 4 way battle was kinda cool, even if it was really goofy, and comical. It was like a soccer match at times with Angilas playing the part of the ball. Godzilla even dove, goalie style at one part. Hedora was gone in seconds. He showed up and Ebira was blasted into him, stabbing him. Godzilla then blasted both of them. The Kaiju cameos at the beginning were cool. Varan, Baragon, Titanosaurus, Megaguirus, Gaira, and Gezora. The opening sequence showed a lot of flashback stock footage. Angilas was ok. I actually did not mind the rolling attack. Angilas got some big cheers. Gino's appearance and quick demise were crowd favorites. Don Frye sounded like Red The Bartender or Vince McMahon. Gravely voice. The X Leader was my favorite charcter. Funny lines. Lotta laughs. I really did not like the film and honestly, I'm not in a rush to see it again. Of course I will. It is a Godzilla film, afterall. IMO, the"FX looked too rushed and certain parts like the Cookie Monster eyed King Caesar were too much for me."

If there is one thing the Japanese kick our ass with over here, it's over-the-top balls-to-the-walls style. And Kitamura is king among them.
That being said....the vid doesn't work for me.

Taken from the CNN story about Godzilla's star on the Walk of Fame. Looks like we'll be getting a theatrical release.

I'd bet that a R3 DVD will be available before it gets a western theatrical release.

I’ve been checking out some of the viewer reviews from the Hollywood premiere on Yahoo Japan. As expected, the Godzilla purists seem none too thrilled with Kitamura’s “spinning” camera tricks and kitchen sink approach. Most seem to agree that Shusuke Kaneko (Godzilla GMK, Gamera 3) would’ve done the final sendoff more justice, while several of the positive reviews still hail it as an empty-headed but energetic popcorn flick. I can’t wait to check this out. I enjoyed most of Kitamura’s works, but he’s almost like an undisciplined, Japanese version of Robert Rodriguez (a guy who’s got more energy than skill when it comes to shooting action scenes).

It definitely sounds like a throwback to the Showa series but, given the number of monsters involved, I think that's a pretty perfect note to end on. Kaneko would've been awesome if they'd got him back, but anything would be an improvement after the flaccid Godzilla x Mechagodzilla.
I see Kitamura doing Godzilla as the kaiju equivalent of Tarantino doing Bond - even if it isn't completely in sync with the series as a whole, it'd be a hell of a ride.
