Ever watch a movie you think you've already seen?

I watched Full Metal Jacket last night. I had been under the impression that I had seen it already. I knew the plot and many of the things that happened. I knew some of the dialog even. But I don't think I've ever seen the movie before last night.

Has this ever happened to you?

All the time, especially with older movies.

I blame this on watching a local TV station that played classic movies all of the time. As a kid, I'd have the TV on 24/7.

It happens to me all the time. However with Full Metal Jacket, that movie has been quoted and parodied and described in so much detail, it is possible you've never seen it but know all about the plot.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened. I was saying the other day that I wanted to see it again, so I rented it. When I finally watched it, I realized that I hadn't really seen it before. It was a nice surprise, and it made me wonder what other movies I think I've seen that I'm wrong about.

All the time. My parents were avid movie watchers when I was growing up.

I had that happen with Fellowship of the Rings (Before you throw stones, I've never read the novels nor have I watched the entire animated version. I chalk it up to the fact it's such an archetypal story heavily borrowed from in other films) and The Great Escape.

Don't read the part in parentheses and you'll have your answer.

Clarified. Thanks.

No problem. I'm too wordy for my own good sometimes. Part of the reason I didn't throw myself to the lions in the DVD Reviewer arena.

from being a Simpsons watcher for years, I felt the hugest sense of deja vu when I first saw Citizen Kane. haven't they over the years parodied about 98% of the movie?

The Great Escape, eh?

...too much Chicken Run for ya... (I dunno...it sounded witty for about 2 seconds)

It happened to me with PSYCHO. I knew every scene, all the dialogue, the ending, etc. I had seen bits and pieces on TV, in movies, museum exhibits, retrospectives and what have you. Had anyone asked, I would have said that I’d saw it. But when I finally watched it in film class last week it occurred to me that I had never once fully seen it.

Kind of the same thing happened with me when I saw Citizen Kane, only I knew the plot from the Tiny Toon Adventures parody. That was a damn good show.

I really noticed that feeling when I was watching Casablanca for the first time, it was like I had seen every single scene re-enacted and every line of dialogue repeated on TV or in other movies before.

Interesting thread...and true!

The weird thing is for me it seems to be almost exclusively Hitchcock films.

Tiny Toons did a Sunset Boulevard parody too, didn't they?
that one was classic too.

Apparently I had never seen "The Natural" in its entirety until last summer. There are just some movies that have become so ingrained in our collective subconscious that you know them by heart.

Case in point, I've never actually seen the Godfather, but I feel like I have. Go figure.

Just today. Nixon.

A Clockwork Orange and Casablanca, both are spoofed so much you think you've watched them both.
