Of all the players to outbid everyone on, why Pedro Martinez?

*Sigh*

Any chance he'll go back to the RedSox for less? I'd much rather the Mets throw money at Beltran if they plan on splurging.
Well looks like the Cubs let Benitez slip away to the Giants.

Rumor is the Diamondbacks want Troy Glaus. That'd be a great pickup for them.

And Milton Bradley looks like he wants to play baseball in Japan.

COPLEY, Ohio -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Milton Bradley is in trouble again, this time charged with disorderly conduct after interfering with a traffic stop near Akron.

Hendry doesn't think too much of him. I trust his judgement. Sounds like it will be closer from within or trade for Kolb of the Brewers.

Papers and rumors are saying that the Cubs are close to a 1 year incentive filled deal with Nomar w/ an option for 2. If healthy I'd take Nomar.

Unless Sosa goes Beltran is appearing less likely. Hopefully a team other than the Astros get him because it'll hurt to see him hit at Wrigley not wearing a cub uniform.
Kolb is good but Benitez was quite solid last year. Thats Percy and Beni they have missed. Glaring closer hole still open.

You have no sympathy from me about Sosa the guy is a total nut.
Any team would take a healthy Nomar, just as any team would take a healthy Magglio or that any team would also take a living Ted Williams in his prime. However, it's rather unlikely that any of those things are going to happen.
Yeah Nomar isn't healthy. Its a risk signing him especially longterm.

You gotta love white trash like Anna Benson. I hope the she and the Mets are in town when Anna finds out he has cheated.
Quote:
ANNA Benson, the former model and stripper who is married to Mets pitcher Kris Benson, vowed yesterday that if she ever catches her husband cheating, she'll have sex with all his teammates.
The buxom brunette, proclaimed "Baseball's Hottest Wife" by FHM magazine, said on Howard Stern's nationally syndicated radio show:

"I told him [Kris] — because that's the biggest thing in athletics, they cheat all the time — I told him, cheat on me all you want. If you get caught, I'm going to s- - -w everybody on your entire team — coaches, trainers, players. I would do everybody on his whole team."

"Mike Piazza just did a back flip," Stern said, egging her on. "Even the coaches? What about, like, the bat boys?"

"Everybody would get a turn," Anna pledged. "If my husband cheated on me and embarrassed me like that, I will embarrass him more than he could ever imagine."

Even Robin Quivers got in on it: "What about groundskeepers?"

"If I'm lining them up," Anna said, "I'll [also] circle into other teams. Whatever team he's playing, I will s- - -w all them too."

Stern asked: "What if your husband, the great pitcher, comes to you and says, 'Honey, I need two women at the same time. I need you to do that for me?' "

Anna replied, "You know, if that's what he came to me and said that he needed, then that's what he would get, because he is my entire universe. I adore my husband. He's a saint . . . he took me out of hell" — a reference to her years on her own.

She added that she and Benson are so into each other, they've had sex in many of the stadiums where he's pitched, including PNC Park and Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.

"We're very busy because we have three children," she said. "You know what, whenever we get the time to do it, we do it. If it happens to be there, that's where we do it.

"I take total care of him," Anna continued, taking credit for the negotiations for Benson's most recent contract that guarantees him $22.5 million over three years, with an option for 2008 that would push the total package to $29.5 million.

"I helped with negotiations . . . I went back and forth a lot with that. He didn't even have anything to do with that. I did that deal . . . I laid out a lot of the terms."
And I'd risk Nomar for 1 year if Renteria isn't in the cards. Cubs are going to give Nomar 3 guarenteed years. The closer situation is what I'm worried about. Come Dec. 7th things should start happening.
Man, you KNOW the rest of the Mets players, coaches, ball boys, fans, etc. are all going to be sending call girls and the like up to his room all year long. C'mon titty!
Considering the content of that article, I find it funny that the word screw got censored.
I don't know...not even Anna Benson is hot enough for me to want to stick it in after John Franco's had a piece.

So RJ to the yanks???? georgie getting impatient.....
Word is RJ will be in pinstripes next week.

Too bad the Angels couldn't grab him.
Angels have signed Cuban defector Kendry Morales to a six year contract, which is a very underrated signing as far as I'm concerned... Anywho, here's a gem about The Big Unit to the Yankees rumor:

I mean, WOW. The DiamondBacks could have just said no, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as funny. Though, last night Tom Gordon wasn't included and "a list of 10" was just one of Oakland's big three.
Thats beyond ridiculous. Arizona is quickly turning into one of the biggest jokes in Baseball. Match this with Backman and they have really outdone themselves.
i'm wondering what the a's are gonna do with hudson. he's laying it out of the line saying sign him or trade him.. it would be a mistake if they got rid of him and kept zito and mulder. hudson's the better one.
I'd get rid of Zito.
I was of the impression that Hudson was Beane's golden boy, is his hip worse than they let out?

Cubs set to resign Nomar/Walker
Quote:
The team is optimistic that by Tuesday night it will have re-signed the double-play combination of shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and second baseman Todd Walker, who worked together in that capacity for the 2003 Boston Red Sox. Tuesday is the deadline for clubs to offer salary arbitration to their free agents without losing rights to that player until May 1.

Look for Garciaparra to receive about $8 million in salary for 2005, plus incentives based on games played.
Still no leadoff hitter but Walker was on pace for a huge year at the plate before Grudz came back. Nomar is a high risk but it has the possibility of high reward too.

Now if only they can shed Sosa and get Beltran.
Where is the closer and where is a decent leadoff hitter?
Wait, I thought bringing in Nomar made the Cubs near perfect? Now they need even more?
Walker is a terrible fielder but a solid hitter, it was smart to re-sign him. I agree they need a closer, but there isn't much out there, they might have to stick with Hawkins (I can't imagine they'd give it back to Borowski)

I've heard nothing on Matt Clement, who, as far as I'm concerned is a really solid pitcher. Anyone know where he might go?
Walker isn't a gifted fielder but he isn't terrible. Matt Clement will be offered arbitration in hopes he declines, which he should for a long term deal, so the Cubs can get a draft pick.
About Matt Clement (probably the best bargain out there), the two teams I keep hearing are Anaheim and Cleveland.
It's official-Cubs resign Nomar
Walker is almost a done deal too.

I'd rather have Renteria to stick it to the Cards but if Nomar comes back healthy he'll be their best SS since Ernie Banks.

GEt rid of Sammy, sign Beltran or Drew, trade for a closer and get the playoff tickets ready.
Renteria wouldn't solve their need for a leadoff hitter and also would be overpriced. So I like the pickup of Nomar however they need a closer and a good leadoff man. Sammy isn't going anywhere. Enjoy the corker.
i highly doubt that beltran will go to the cubs. you'd be lucky enough to get rid of sosa while also obtaining a decent closer. i'm none to please with nomar.

Cubs to keep Maddux happy by getting another former personal catcher from Atlanta.

Blanco inks 2 year deal
Quote:
Blanco, 33, appeared in 114 games last year with the Minnesota Twins, batting .206 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs. He spent the 2002-03 seasons with the Atlanta Braves as Greg Maddux's personal catcher.
Bako was great calling games but shit at the plate. Solid back up pick.
Quite possibly the worst offensive catcher in baseball, no problem with him behind the plate though... but he's making an awful lot for half a player.

The Yankees fill second base with Tony Womack, and pick up Jaret Wright for three years $21 million dollars. They've also cut Clark, Lee and Olerud loose.

Twins keep Radke, Cardinals keep Morris, while the Mets cut ties with Al Leiter and John Franco.
There is some crazy money getting thrown around this offseason. Some teams are really screwing themselves.
It's a sellers market for starting pitching, that's for sure. And before anyone says that it always is, just look at the money getting thrown at the likes at Cory Lidle, Paul Wilson or even Kris Benson for that matter.
Signing Blanco to a 2 year deal seems pretty silly. He's good defensively but can't hit a lick. Occasionally he'll pop a long ball against a lefty but he does absolutely nothing else of value with the bat.

The Cubs are really assembling a very punchless bench between Macias, Perez and Blanco. Short of signing Beltran, they'll have a hard time replacing Alou's offense as well. A full year of Nomar will help, a lot, but Hendry isn't leaving himself much room for error or injury. And they've done nothing to address their OBP problems. They still have a very good pitching staff and will hit a lot of HRs, but there are going to be stretches where they waste a lot of good pitching performances.
The Brewers reportedly have interest in Clement. I think Cleveland is the front runner though. Considering the money being thrown around this season, I think whoever ends up with Clement is going to be very satisified.

As a Brewers fan, I'm interested in what they do with Kolb and Podsednik, both of whom are on the block. I know the Cubs are supposedly interested in Kolb, although they haven't seemed willing to offer up more than Dubois or Kelton, which won't get a deal done.
Al Leiter just signed with the Florida Marlins, not a bad signing, but if the money is too high they should have gotten their hands on a guy who could actually go six innings every start.
Mariners keep Dan Wilson.

Not a fan of that choice...

Have you seen Paul Bako hit? Niether have I. 1 HR in 2 years and if he hit .200 he was lucky. Say 2nd worst. You really only want your 2nd catcher to be good defensively and w/ a staff. They have Barrett for offense.
I'm a Brewers fan. I've seen both Bako and Blanco "hit". Or rather, hold the bat in their hand and swing it feebly. Signing catchers that the Brewers didn't want to bring back is usually a bad idea.

Edit: BTW, I realize that Blanco is a backup and probably not any worse than any other backup on the market. However, there's no reason to make a multi-year committment to a player like Blanco when every year there are similar, younger players available for $750K.

Cubs don't have to pinch pennies like the Brewers do.

Then why don't they sign Beltran?

Who says they won't? There are many factors Hendry has to consider. If he wants a leadoff hitter LF is the only position left to do so. Patterson can do it but K's too much. He may want to trade Sosa first.

No big free agent has signed anyway. After the winter meetings this weekend when trades happen I'm sure Hendry will address the 3rd outfielder with Beltran, Drew, or a speedy leadoff guy.

Why don't the White Sox sign him? They already missed Wright and won't get The Big Unit.
radke at 9 mil per year is too much. pavano should be able to get more then that. i wonder where maggs is gonna go now and what kind of contract he will sign? maybe sign a one year incentive deal like nomar has.
Trying to change it to the White Sox, I didn't see that coming. You're as predictable as a calender. The Sox won't sign him because they're cheap and will settle for Jermaine Dye.

The Cubs make as much money as the Yankees or the Red Sox. They could keep Sosa and sign Beltran and still make money hand over fist - they just choose not to.

Oh, & the Yankees can take Wright and his 3 years/21 million. They can afford it if he collapses. No one year wonder deserves that money.
*sends good Mariners vibes to Carlos Delgado*

Think of it this way, when Kris Benson and Jaret Wright are making 7+, it's probably in line with what he's currently worth... especially coming off of the numbers he put up last season.
I'm adopting a wait and see attitude with Wright---if he's legit it will have been a great signing.

Clement to the Brewers, Indians or Angels huh? I'm not sure why anyone would want to go to the Brewers, but the Indians have a good young team. The Angels really makes sense, they have the hitting, they could use another power pitcher starter. Why would the Tigers not make a play for him? Apparently they're talking to Pavano, so why not try and entice Clement also?
Phils get Lieber. Not a terrible pick-up, but with two or three alleged studs waiting in the wings, I hope they're planning on trading one of their current starters.
Womack was a nice pickup but Wright? Steinbrenner has learned nothing.

He's incredible when he's healthy, might be able to fill Scott Williamson's void (though I hope the sox sign him).
Too bad Mantei's never healthy.

But again, they're not paying him much... and to tell the truth, it's not like there are any good relievers on the market. At least with Mantei theres a chance they might be catching lightning in a bottle, sort of the same logic behind me hoping the Mets try to reel in Koch... maybe being reunited with Rick Peterson will do him wonders.
