Relocation to Alabama?

There is a job going within the company i work for that would involve a move to Alabama. I have to admit i know bugger all about the place being from the UK, the job is a good one so i wondered if anyone is from Alabama or knows what its like to live there?

It depends on where you live. Montgomery and Mobile (and most of Lower Alabama, come to think of it) aren't great, but Birmingham and Huntsville are nice towns. I've got friends in both, and they really like living there. Plus, there's some beautiful country in North AL, believe it or not.

I've always been of the belief that Alabama is a place you go FROM not TO.

Skynyrd says it's a real sweet home, but it ain't nothing to me.

There's a lot of interest in this job so i think my chances of actually getting it are pretty slim, plus what you guys are saying matches the info ive got from elsewhere. I was more pondering it than anything else, as the song goes "a change will do you good" and you cant get much different that changing countries.

One thing's for sure -- going from the UK to Alabama would be a BIG change!

Living in Birmingham, Alabama, is really getting a lot more fun these days, especially in the downtown area. Lots of improvements and development going on there. The cost of living in B'ham is much less than in most cities. And if you're into movies (either watching 'em or making 'em), the guys who run our local film festival are always setting up indie screenings and 48-hour filmmaking contests.

I would shoot myself in the face before I would even VISIT Alabama.

Huntsville is cool if you are into NASA and the like. Every other part about Bama I've been too hasn't been very interesting.

I suspect most Alabamans feel the same way about visiting Brooklyn.

NASA is in Houston (more accurately, it's about 10 miles south of Houston). Hunstville has a prison and the biggest statue of Sam Houston you'll ever see.

Ahh. I was wondering why you didn't believe there was NASA in Huntsville.

Thanks for the advice, i think i will probably pass on the job (lots of little things they failed to mention in the email that cropped up when i did some digging).

This post amused me though

There needs to be a ban on towns naming themselves after other towns. I was thinking the other Huntsville, here in Texas.

Well, Birmingham is in fact named after another city (its in the uk) as it Gloucester, York (as in New York) Washington and Boston to name but a few. To enact your ban you would have to re-name half of your own country.
