Playstation 2 scratching disks?!?

The past couple of games I played for a long time in my Playstation 2 (Spidey 2 and GTA:SA) have wound up with scratches all the way around the center of the disc, which causes them to not load anymore. Anyone else hear of this? Or is mine just weird? Is there any cure, or should I start saving up for a new PS2? And yes, I know some of you will tell me to get an XBox or GC, or something like "HAHA, only lamaz get PSpoo, L337orz gamerz get a XBOX or a GameCube". Well, maybe not that last one on these boards.

I've heard of the PS2 disc drive needing re-alignment, but I've never read anything about it actually scratching discs. I'd do a Google search on cleaning the PS2 drive and look into opening that thing up and making sure no trash got into it or something similar...

This is exactly why I got rid of my PS2. When VC came out, I went through TWO of the motherfuckers, and the PS2 scratched them both times.

I did a google check, and it seems this is a fairly common problem. I have to adjust the white cog (opposed to the sprocket ) in the back of the laser device. If that doesn't work, I might pick up one of those slimline PS2s, even though I've heard it has overheating issues. Why can't Sony make a reliable system?
