Dead End discussion

Fantastic movie! I would have liked to have seen more gore but aside from that it was great. Now the ending has me thinking but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Can we have a spoiler filled discussion yet?

Glad you liked it! I hope lots of people will follow your example, it's well worth watching!

Did you catch my interview with Jean-Baptiste Andrea on dreadcentral?

Cool little movie, but it struggles at feature length. Excellent character work, and they squeeze every last drop out of a limited concept.

But I thought the ending was a let down - I kept hoping the movie would be smarter than that, but instead it went for the most obvious and predictable conclusion possible.

Everything up to that point is pretty damn good though. A true exercise in making the most of tiny resources - one road, a car and a handful of actors. Maintaining mystery and suspense with such meagre tools is quite an accomplishment.

It would've worked better as a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode I think.

I haven't seen your interview AG, I'll check that out.

I didn't think the ending was a letdown at all. Sure it was Twilight Zoneish but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It could have been worse and ended up like Jeepers Creepers.

See, apart from the dumb action stuff in the police station, I thought the ending to Jeepers Creepers was great - because it was the complete opposite of what you expect from the genre. The ending to Dead End should be apparent to any genre fan long before the end. In fact, I'd guess that most knowledgable horror buffs would be able to guess the "twist" just from the synopsis of the movie. It's the most obvious (and overused) way to end a "what's going on" story.

Doesn't mean the journey to get there is any less entertaining, but the movie is witty and smart, and I hoped they'd come up with an ending that matched that inventiveness.

That, and the really cheesy look the guy driving the car gives makes it all very silly at tne end, but like you said, getting there is well worth the few moments of "God how lame" you get at the end. Sorta like Haute Tension the first time you see it.

Don't think I'm defending the ending but for a low budget picture I got more out of the movie than I thought I would. They should have ended it when the lady in white says' "He's not here for you". But then that would have been a cliffhanger and people would have been pissed. I personally didn't want to know who was behind the wheel of the car. I would have liked that left to my imagination like all of the kills and the scene with the lady and the brother. Loved the lip biting.

SPOILERS

So what is the end all about then. I take it the man in black is death and they were all in hell or something like that. That doesn't explain why the girl was left alive though. Had they killed her off to it would have been a bit better.

END SPOILERS

Now my problem with JC comes in after the first third of the movie. That is what I mean by the ending. The whole idea that he was a demon just ruined it for me. Had it been some deranged human I would have loved it but Demons are evil by nature so what he is doing isn't disturbing in the least just stupid. WHy drive when you can fly. Nonsense.

Exactly. I always felt like the comic music "wha wha wha whaaaaaaaa" was about to come on at the end with that cheesy look! But at least they added the bit over the end credits to make up for it a little bit. But I think that Dead End is so strong for it's whole running time, that that very last bit wasn't enough to ruin it for me. Whereas the last 15 minutes of Haute Tension is just plain stupid.

I'm sure you've heard it before, Dr., but try watching Haute again, remembering...this is all from her perspective.
