SpongeBob Squarepants movie discussion

So is anyone really clamoring for this? I watch the TV shows, and they're pretty funny, but I don't have the drive that this is a "Must-See" movie for me.

This will probably do well because of the built-in children base, but are "we" excited about it? Is it going to be good enough to knock The Incredibles from the #1 spot?
You read my mind; I was about to start a thread about this.

I'm seeing it this weekend, and I've heard from people I trust that it's flat-out hilarious.

The game's pretty good too.
I know more adults than kids that are excited about this.
I've never seen more than a few minutes of the TV show, but I've seen the trailers and some commercials for the movie, and now I really want to see it. It looks fantastic.
Yes it seems more adults want to see this then kids. But it has so much wit and comdy to it i see how it does appeal to them. I'm looking secretly forward to this!!!

It's great.

For God Sakes It Has David Hasselhoff In It!

The show makes me laugh pretty good. Any kids show that references Nosferatu is okay in my book.

Sideways comes out this weekend in my area, though, so that takes precedence.

I'm absolutely baffled by otherwise rational and intelligent adults who enjoy these Nickelodeon shows.

I've had to sit through the trailer for this three times, and it's just the most obnoxious thing I've ever seen.
I've had cable for barely two weeks and I've become hopelessly addicted to this show. I'll be seeing the movie.
Yep. We may take our 3 year old to see it during the first showing Saturday morning.

I can't hope to describe it. I've watched the damn thing with my kid and I just bust a gut every time. If it's any consolation, my wife thinks it's about the stupidest damn thing she ever saw.
I will be taking my 6 year old son to see it this weekend... I think it looks fun as well..

I also think it will overtake The Incredibles as the box office. It has a lot of the same fan base as The Incredibles and those people will rush out to see it..

I guess I've underestimated the power of the Sponge.

The show's pretty good, but I'll probably wait for the DVD.

The movie is wonderfully great.

If you enjoy the show (or have little ones who enjoy it), then everyone's in for a wild ride of the most extreme nautical nonsense outside of your small screen.

The creators, Hillenberg and Co., definitely made sure that what works in their 10 minute "shows" can indeed be extended into a 80+ minute feature and be so thoroughly absurd, wonderfully out of left field, amazingly silly, and excellently tailored to make you smile (a lot). How's that for adjectives?

Anyways, the beginnning of the movie is great, very "epic" and not even animated (on a side note, if you have the soundtrack, you'll find no Avril Lavinge theme song here) and very, very, very silly. SpongeBob and Patrick's journey is your typical standard "we must find the crown!" type of adventure, but the creativity lies in the way it's told, those silly characters that they meet, the songs that they sing (especially the ones with a certain type of "creature" - very silly), and finally, just the absurd absurdity that everyone working on the film works hard to achieve.

Hasslehoff's cameo is, by all means, not even over from what the trailers suggest. There's a whole lot more, and the scenes building up to that are incredibly tense and exciting, and the way they get to the denoument is great too. And the ending, wow, the ending, I can't and won't spoil it, but it has to be seen to be enjoyed (they also did this in an earlier episode, but it works sooooo much better on the big screen).

I love the show and now I love the movie. Highly reccommended.

I used to hate Spongebob until I saw that it is easily the best "kids" show on T.V. They actually have pretty god damn absurd stuff going on, it's almost at the level of absurbity that Anchorman is, actually maybe more so, makes it easily watchable for parents. Certainly gotta check out the flick on Friday.

I was always an elitist when it came to cartoons. Thundercats, Danger Mouse, and Transformers were the pinnacle of kid shows, and the stuff being done today is a pale imitation of that.

After watching a few episodes of Spongebob with my godson, I had to face reality and admit that I was wrong. Spongebob Squarepants is wittier and more entertaining than every single one of my once-cherished 80's cartoons. I didn't think it was possible, but I have to thank the kid for leading me to the truth. Most of my friends who have small kids (especially the dads) feel the same way.

I'm sure part of it has to do with the competition, since Spongebob blows all those other kid cartoons out of the water. It's biggest limitation is that it's made to appeal primarily to kids, but it also makes it even MORE satisfying to see the more subtle subversive/adult jokes skillfully weaved into a show that should only be attracting elementary school kids.

I could understand you not liking it, since you're completely unfamiliar with the show, but at least give 'em credit for their teaser trailer . That one came completely out of left field.

I dunno if it's as good as Dangermouse, but it sits alongside the Powerpuff Girls as the coolest contemporary cartoon this side of Teen Titans.
Well, remember Fett, I'm an American. It may have had some UK-centric jokes that went over my head back when I was a kid.

Powerpuff Girls was another pleasant surprise, BTW. I haven't seen too many of them, but the episode that convinced me of its greatness was the Beat Alls episode. Great dialogue.

I first got introduced to Spongebob when I came home from work one day and asked my wife what my daughter was watching. I sat down to watch it with my 2 year old (it was the "Sailor Mouth" episode for those who are familiar) and I found myself laughing hysterically. Not only was it funny, but they also delivered a good message to the kids about swearing ("There aint nothin' fancy 'bout that word!"), after that I was hooked and started watching it regularly. Now we own every volume on DVD (didn't buy the seasons because we bought them for my daughter and I'm much more comfortable with the idea of replacing a $15 volume rather than a $40 season - she's 2 and doesnt know how to take proper care of her DVDs yet lol). Anyway, to sum it up we're extremely excited about the movie (although we're probably going to have to wait for DVD, toddlers don't typically behave well in the theatres).
Is there anyone here who has assumed they would hate Spongebob, then watch it and still hate it? Because it seems like everyone thinks it will be retarded but then actually watches it and realizes how awesome it is. I will be very surprised if this doesn't open at number one, because of the very large and wide fanbase it has. Me and about 6 of my college buddies are gonna be there Friday night, and I'm sure we aren't the only ones.

Devin's review

Happy to see that he liked it, and that the fun spirit of the show made it to the big screen. Something tells me that it'll be even more fun to watch in a packed late night theater.
Love Dev's review and all of the raves here, but I still can't bring myself to watch this. Like Slater, the previews and show just seem so utterly obnoxious to me, that I can't even imagine anything funny or charming about the concept.
I dunno, Devin seems like such a cynical guy, so I'm utterly suprised that he would enjoy a movie like this looks to be. If he liked it, I'm willing to bet that it's worth a look.
Saw it last night, right up there with anchorman as the most random thing i've seen this year, bubble fights, rock performances, knee slap dancing, gratuitous screaming at bald people, god damn that was an entertaining film.

"Hasslehoff, you've done it again"
There's an action sequence on Hasselhoff's leathery back. That's worth reading twice.
My little brother saw it last night but I couldn't bring myself to go, Spongebob scares the crap out of me.
I'm a Goofy Goober.

You're a Goofy Goober.

We're all Goofy Goobers.

I went with my little brother and sister. I think I laughed even more than they did. I've never watched an entire episode of the show, but I knew Devin wouldn't stear me wrong. This movie is just fucking hilarious.
Wow I hate to be a cynical puss, but i can't stand that show. Oh yeah, now i remember, spongebob's annoying voice, it fits his character, but damn! And that laugh, oh how i loathe that laugh. I prefer the fairly oddparents over spongebob anyday of the week.
Saw the first five minutes at work on Friday. Laughed my ass off.

Saw the last half-hour at work today. Laughed even harder.

I need to see the whole thing soon... best use of Hasselhoff EVER.
Yeah it's a pretty funny show. I only gave it a chance when i first got netflix and rented the DVDs. I'll see the movie eventually.

*spongebob is being controlled by Plankton, His head turns around Exorcist style*

Judging by the movie, it's like Ren & Stimpy without the constant malice.
I saw this with my five year old this weekend. I was truly seeing it through her eyes, as the moments of danger and violence made me wince as much as her. The Cyclops is the most terrifying fucking thing I've experienced in years. My daughter started grabbing at my arm and cried "What's he doing?!". But she stuck it out to the end. I asked if she wanted to leave, but she had to see how it all turned out. And just try to tell me watching Spongebob and Patrick slowly dehydrate isn't the most gruesome moment in cinema. Watching this as my five year old would left me emotionally exhausted by the film's end. BTW- as soon as the credits rolled, my daughter said the squid guy should have gotten to be manager. Then asked to see another movie.

Planktons screams when Spongebob stepped on him had me in stitches.
Actually, SB and Patrick shriveling/dehydrating has been in the TV show. And yes it's kind of nasty.
Finally saw it this weekend, with my 3 year old in tow. Once he got settled (this was his first movie visit), he was fine. I enjoyed the movie, thought a lot of it was very funny, especially the scenes with Plankton, who I think is rivaling Patrick as my favorite character in the show. And the "I Wanna Rock" song, featuring Patrick in fishnets and high-heels was disturbingly funny. My son said he liked it, and gave the insightful opinion that "Squidward's nose is really big" and thought that the opening number with the pirates singing the Spongebob theme was funny. His final review? "That movie was just crazy."
