A reprieve from the agenda of paganism

President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

The media tells us that you have received the largest number of popular votes of any president in America's history. Congratulations!

In your re-election, God has graciously granted America—though she doesn't deserve it—a reprieve from the agenda of paganism. You have been given a mandate. We the people expect your voice to be like the clear and certain sound of a trumpet. Because you seek the Lord daily, we who know the Lord will follow that kind of voice eagerly.

Don't equivocate. Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ. Honor the Lord, and He will honor you.

Had your opponent won, I would have still given thanks, because the Bible says I must (I Thessalonians 5:18). It would have been hard, but because the Lord lifts up whom He will and pulls down whom He will, I would have done it. It is easy to rejoice today, because Christ has allowed you to be His servant in this nation for another presidential term. Undoubtedly, you will have opportunity to appoint many conservative judges and exercise forceful leadership with the Congress in passing legislation that is defined by biblical norm regarding the family, sexuality, sanctity of life, religious freedom, freedom of speech, and limited government. You have four years—a brief time only—to leave an imprint for righteousness upon this nation that brings with it the blessings of Almighty God.

Christ said, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my father honour” (John 12:26).

The student body, faculty, and staff at Bob Jones University commit ourselves to pray for you—that you would do right and honor the Savior. Pull out all the stops and make a difference. If you have weaklings around you who do not share your biblical values, shed yourself of them. Conservative Americans would love to see one president who doesn't care whether he is liked, but cares infinitely that he does right.

Best wishes.

Sincerely your friend,

Bob Jones III
President

BJIII:lw

PS: A few moments ago I read this letter to the students in Chapel. They applauded loudly their approval.

When I told them that Tom Daschle was no longer the minority leader of the Senate, they cheered again.

On occasion, Christians have not agreed with things you said during your first term. Nonetheless, we could not be more thankful that God has given you four more years to serve Him in the White House, never taking off your Christian faith and laying it aside as a man takes off a jacket, but living, speaking, and making decisions as one who knows the Bible to be eternally true.

Why shouldn't we think that he does? Upstanding, non-extremist Christians are more than willing to sit on their hands while blowhards like this make them look silly. When was the last time the moderate Christian community did anything, publicly or privately, to separate themselves from fundamentalists?

Is there really "a Christian community," or is there just a conglomerate of subgroups loosely united under that heading?

Bob Jones certainly speaks for the fundamentalist Conservative segment of said community, and that's a SIZABLE demographic. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are a majority or a minority, but they makeup a considerable part of the modern-day Christian populace.

Sure, they SAY there's been a reprieve, but no one's doing anything about the Wicker Man at the end of my block. Lip service, is what it is.

I'd say they are subgroups, but if approached for an honest opinion, I don't think Mr. and Mrs. Average Christian would be in favor of trading our system of government for a theocracy. Most Christians, and moderates in general it seems, don't have the stones to stand up against extremism.

Isn't it the Bob Jones University that gets all the money at the end of The Ladykillers? I thought the Coens had invented the name, but it's funnier if it turns out to be this fundamentalist little sect.

Yes, Bob Jones University IS a real school (or, at least it actually exists). More fun facts:

- NOT an accredited college.
- Only till VERY recently did they allow interracial dating.
- ALL dating is closely monitored and even hand-holding is forbidden.

There's more, but BJU is a joke.

Thanks, my appreciation for Ladykillers has instantly doubled.

No hand-holding? They'd get on well with some schools in Iran, they should do an exchange program...

Wwbhd?

What would Bill Hicks do? He would have a field day.

Secondly - I live next to the small town of Christiansburg, VA. I have my radio set to a Christian station, not because I like it, but because my FM Transmitter for my iPod uses that frequency. 6 of these Christian stations, and yet only 2 fuzzy Rock stations! So I listen a lot to the sermons and faux-"programming" because I find it fascinating and I'm usually too lazy to hook up my iPod for my 5 minute commute to work. It's amazing to hear how much hate is passed around in disguise of Christian righteousness. They talk about scientists like they're Satan's little helpers, Gays like they're abducting their children with sodomizing in mind, and they use words "Muslim" and "Terrorist" interchangeably. Thrown in the mix is how I will burn in hell and suffer for eternity if I reject or question Jesus' love for me. Sounds like a win-win situation to me. The fundamentalist are just itching for a Holy War. I'm angry because of the way they treat everybody else, yet I know that your typical hillbilly yahoo has not read ANY of the other sacred writings of the other world religions (or any other book but the bible) - but take what these fake evangelists (who God talks to personally) say as the end-all-be-all. Don't get me wrong, the Bible is a good book, but it's not the only book (good quote, interesting test - watch "Inherit the Wind" with a fundamentalist Christian - you'd be surprised that they miss what Spencer Tracy's character was trying to say at the end completely). Fundamentalism is bad in any religion.

Another interesting note: I live in Blacksburg, which is outside of Christiansburg, which is not to far from Lynchburg - see a pattern here? I am so creeped out.

I've been to Bob Jones. It's a scary, weird place. In their school brochure, they actually had (circa 1996 or so) a fire and brimstone speech.

GASP! Pagans!
No, no, no. Those are heathens.

Pagans have long hair.

I think we can all agree that The Agenda of Paganism would be a fantastic name for a swing band.

It's a logical argument. All pagans are heathens, but not all heathens are pagans. Some are just sinners or unbaptized babies.

Not long after Pope Paul VI died in 1978, Bob Jones, chancellor of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, wrote an ill-tempered article in his school’s magazine, Faith for the Family (not to be confused with Dr. James Dobson’s magazine, Focus on the Family). The article was republished by the Fundamentalist organization Mission to Catholics, International (run by an ex-Carmelite priest-turned-Fundamentalist minister) as a tract entitled The Church of Rome in Perspective.

No effort is made to be conciliatory, as the first line demonstrates: "Pope Paul VI, archpriest of Satan, a deceiver and an anti-Christ, has, like Judas, gone to his own place." It goes downhill from there.
This same "school" has a professor who teaches "History of the Roman Catholic Church", I wonder how impartial that is!

No, Luke - I AM THY FATHER!

BTW
I highly recommend James Earl Jones Reads The Bible. Yes, that's right. Mr. Darth Vader/Thulsa Doom himself. When I listen to it, I add my own mechanical breathing sound. Surreal!

Slater, I just wanted to say that just about everything you say cracks me up.

The problem with bible-thumping christians is also what I think is the greatest and worst thing about the bible: The bible itself downplays its own importance. I believe the quote is "Even Satan can quote scripture for his own purposes". I don't know the chapter and verse, or even if that is a direct quote, but that's the gist of it. That passage can be used to knock down these bible-thumpers, but it also kind of attacks itself.
