Ok, if anyone wishes to call bullshit I can post pics to document this....

I have well over 1,000 DVDs.

This is not counting "2-disc Special Edition" sets as 2 discs or "Season 1 of _______ 6-disc extravaganza!" as more than one. 1,000+ TITLES. I haven't the patience to count or catalog them, but that number was reached at the last attempt. If I were attempting pure accuracy I'd count every disc with worthwile feature-length material. For example: 6 discs for Band of Brothers, 2 for the 3-disc Criterion Version of Brazil (for 2 completely different versions of the film), 0 discs for Heavy Metal 2000 (what was I thinking!?).

This is not bragging.
This is not boasting.
This is a sickness.

Every one was purchased by myself with very slight exceptions. Examples: My girlfriend found and purchased a copy of the then-recalled Ed Wood DVD (The only change made to the current edition is the omission of a superfluous tranvestite interview, but MY copy has it, bitches!). I won the Muppet Show: Season 1 and Muppets Wizard of Oz discs on this very site (thanks again, Nick!). My best friend bought and rightfully loathed Showgirls, and I took it into my DVD shelter.

99.8% of these discs are loved dearly. Those I've mocked in this post are in the minority. The collection houses numerous rarities and collectibles, with highlights being the aforementioned Ed Wood recall, the afore-posted MST3K movie, various mostly-OOP Criterion discs (Robocop, Rushmore, Seven Samurai, Life of Brian, etc.), and a smattering of signed DVDs (principally the Bruce Campbell-endorsed Evil Dead trilogy).

I know of folks (some personally) with much larger collections, but keep in mind that I'm young, I'm a student, I recieve a very modest income, and I have bills to pay (apartment, etc.).

But I enjoy the collection, so I understand if it comes off as grandiloquence when I discuss certain aspects of it. The stated purpose of the thread, as I interpreted it, was to examine what made your digital heap worth discussing.

IIRC, RUSHMORE isn't oop.

What's the point of having a collection if you aren't going to catalog them? Don't you get confused about what you have? Also, you have almost no chance of getting compensation from home/renter's insurance if they are stolen or destroyed if you don't give your agent an updated list.

I have almost 500 titles and I inventory my discs every two or three months and give a current list to my insurance company about that often. I also use DVDAFICIONADO.COM so I can access my collection from anywhere and add titles. End of nag.

True, but you just announced "I'm not boasting or anything but I've got over a 1000 DVDs including some really rare shit and stuff signed by your heroes!" without saying what really comprises of the other 99.8% or your collection, the meat of it. You could probably start a small shop with the signed stuff and Criterion rarities many people on this site have. Your collection could also contain every volume of Star Trek's many series, all the WWF DVDs available, Friends and Tae Bo DVDs for all we know. Which would take the edge off, some.

It's about rating a whole collection. I have some shit in mine, some fantastic stuff, some even more rare Criterions and a whole bunch of Asian budget discs from across the continent which round out some esoterica. There are some really fine gems some of these collections listed. And to know or be reminded they exist and prmopt other people to (re)discover them is half the point, I felt.

Man, all this made me realize I have to update my dvdafiaciando list.

Nah, the vast majority, like I failed to communicate, is stuff I love. Accross-the-board shit movies I mentioned like Showgirls are rarely present. There's a handful of $5.99 cheapo discs and I never buy used flicks. I understand that to make the claim without a list makes it suspect and I'm comfortable with that. Unfortunately I just don't see how I could satisfactorily catalog the titles considering they come in on average right now about 1 every 2-3 days. Seriously, most of my income that doesn't go toward bills makes it's way to DVD and I'd hate the compulsion I'd feel to constantly update.

Oh, and I pretty much CONCEDE to the fact that my initial threadpost was, in many ways, boastful, but these discs are pretty much my only vice and the thread seemed like a fun place to bring it up (I normally don't, and see myself rarely doing so in the future).

I know Rushmore is still in print, that's why I began the statement with the "mostly" qualifier. Mostly....

And while I appreciate the concern for the possible loss of the collection, I haven't got an insurance agent but I was under the impression that merely listing what you own was not proof enough. Plus, I'm always anticipating a meteor or ICBM strike, which would render all this moot anyway.

I've considered compiling a listing through dvdafiaciando, but between homework, classes, work, and WATCHING these DVDs (+special features, no matter how dull, and most commentary tracks if the participants seem worthwhile) I honestly can't say when I'd be able to get around to it. Certainly not this year - have you SEEN the release schedule?! Simply signing up for the boards here took a big step and commitment on my part, but I'll see what I can do.

Not true, unless your agent (which you don't have) is a weasel. I gave my agent the list and they said it would be enough for a claim. Replacement value for my collection is around $10,000, making it my most valuable asset. Fuck my clothes and furniture. I gotta have my DVD's back if my house burns down. I pay like $14 a month for renter's insurance. If you could get a rate like that, it's in your interest to do it. That's the cost of one DVD per month.

Wouldn't sell it. These are my core "fanboy/franchise" flicks. I tried off unload The Grudge (a film I think is just terrible), but every used shop already had like ten copies each.

billz: I may need to look into that as your sentimental attachment to your collection is no doubt as strong as mine. Shit, these discs are what the (currently hypothetical) kids are inheriting.

The Dark Shape: no collection deserves outright ridicule.

Anyone who may be interested: I've come up with what I hope to be an adequate compromise to typing out my entire slew of DVDs, and have listed a portion of my collection with DVDaf. I intended to do more, but it took a small amount of effort and I therefore couldn't be bothered with it. However, the site is a great tool for those with decent clerical wherewithal. I think this sampling of what I own should give insight into my tastes and impulse purchasing habits. I listed the titles I own through the letter 'C', but have included the first 'D' title to both make up for the one preceeding it and to promote it as it has been the most surprising of recent acquisitions. The few that follow it are mainly alphabetical anamolies:

Pi took some searching to find. It remained elusive until searching for Faith in Chaos, which I see as a tagline, not a subtitle. I actually file the film based on its numerical value, or its working title (3.14159265358).

Similarly, the filing system I use places titles with numerals (12 monkeys) before those with letters. Filing titles that spell out numbers (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) in this manner would lead to chaos. This is why Thirteen Days does not appear before 13 Ghosts (It goes under 'T'). I'm certain most collectors do the same, but I'm not yet certain how DVDaf handles this.

I refuse to have a National Lampoon section on my DVD racks, so I file them according to their actual titles. DVDaf does not.

Trinity and Beyond, I realize, deserves to be filed under 'T'. I believe I shall rectify that. It's just that The Atomic Bomb Movie is so powerful and prominent, it's currently under 'A'.

Thanks for the kind words, sawalter. Your collection is wonderful, though it looks quite familiar. We seem to share similar tastes, especially when it comes to the works of certain directors (Carpenter, Cronenberg). You've got a number of flicks I still need to pick up (I'm always envious when I see Battle Royale in someone's queue. I need to bite the non-R1 bullet someday soon and snatch that one up myself), and I'm glad to see such gems in there as the Deranged/Motel Hell Double Feature. I own no Freddy or Jason films myself, and was glad to see a long stretch of titles in the 'L' section that aren't on my shelf but otherwise it was like looking in a mirror. I may try completing my listing in the forseeable future if DVDaf will let me add titles by perusing other collectors' lists. I am making a quick update now as you reminded me I haven't yet listed Army of Darkness (it's on display away from the other DVDs with the Ash/Evil Ash action figs and the rest of the trilogy).

Showing that I have way too much time on my hands I have typed in a little review for each of my DVDs with favorite or funny quotes from the film. As well as noting if the DVD is anamorphic or not.

One major difference I have noticed from alot of the collections posted so far is my lack of horror or foreign action films. I have a few, but they mostly aren't my bag, baby!
