Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events Discussion

Time is drawing near and I am eagerly anticipating this film because of several factors.

First off, the production design on this film looks incredible. It's a world of gothic that looks a little shade to the left and two steps to the right. Count Olaf's house, as in its execution and in its appearance could be on the right track.

Secondly is its cast. Jim Carey aside (I have a feeling he'll be doing a toned down version of his antics here), I am excited to see Billy Connolly, Meryl Streep, and even Craig Ferguson as the person of indeterminate gender.

Third, and final, is the musical presence of one Thomas Newman. I consider him to be one of the, if not the, best working composers today and the ways he's able to complement scenes from various movies these past couple of years has been astounding.

I am, however, a little afraid about Mr. Brad Silberling, because let's face it, Casper wasn't very good. When you're little, Casper seemed like a pretty good kids movie, but when you grow up and re-watch the film you find out that the special effects have overshadowed everything and that's very good in the case of an awkwardly awful Cathy Moriarty performance, Eric Idle phoning it in, and Bill Pullman being "the dad". Not quite as good. I attribute their performances to Silberling, and that is what I am cautious about with this next childrens film from the man.

Additionally, I was able to read a great draft of the script when Sonnenberg was still the forerunner in the direction department by author Handler. It was very good. In fact, I was floored at how dark, humorous, and downright silly the film was, dread for dread's sake. There were some great moments, especially a play on "who's on first" with some henchmen. But, since then I know there's been a few re-writes and whatnot from Handler and a few other people, and that's what makes me nervous. It didn't read like it was remotely broke at all.

Scott Rudin has been having a great year as of this point and I'm definitely jazzed out this next outing, from the visuals all the way to the trailers that they've unleashed.

I'd like to know what you guys and gals think and what your reservations are and what looks good to you. Especially how many of you are planning to see the film at some point.

Awesome. Glad to hear you liked it, Devin. I'll be catching it this weekend.

This movie looks like it's flying under the radar around here.

Looking back on it, I'd have no problems comparing this to WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. It's going to be one of those movies that will be looked at for years, in my opinion.

The movie looks interesting, and it's good to hear that Devin liked it. I hope I can find the time for it.

The first thing I noticed about this one is that the girl in the movie reminds me of the gelflings (or whatever they were called) from The Dark Crystal. Yup, that was my first thought.

I missed out on some preview screenings last weekend, but rest assured, I'll be there soon to see this.

I'm glad that you liked it Devin, as I always thought that it was in the same mold as the Potter movies, but for some reason I am really pysched about this movie.

Yeah, what's the deal? The first trailer, to me, was interesting enough to get me to start reading the books. Course, it seems like all of my friends are looking forward to it...maybe it's just the CHUD crowd.

Loved it. Best stage for Carrey's comedic ability in years. Everyone was great. Everything looked great. and Thomas Newman's score was superb. Almost pop, but wonderful regardless.

Are the Pre & Post Release discussions being discouraged in favor of the Focused Film Forum? Just wondering.

Here is the CHUD Main Lemony Snicket thread I started but now wonder if I should have just came here.

Just got back and I got much love for this film. It's worth seeing for the visual aesthetic alone.

Was it just me, or were the end credits one of the best parts of the entire film? Just beautifully done.

I liked the movie. I thought it was a little too episodic (the result of cramming three books into one movie), but otherwise, it was a great-looking picture with some stunning set design. Carrey scored some decent laughs and all three of the children were likable. It's no Harry Potter, but it was still pretty good.

Saw it yesterday, liked it a lot actually for a sec I thought they were going to pull a Pixar and add a short before it about some damned elf, showed me. The moive was episodic but I felt that it pulled it off nicely, I knew going in it wasn't going to be cheery or anything [from the trailers which straight up tell you it won't be] so when Carrey starts backhanding the boy I knew this wouldn't be anything like Harry Potter. the style of this film wouldn't seem very out of place in a Burton movie, very well done, the score escapes my mind, I guess another viewing would help it stick.

two complaints....actually one divided into two.

The ending to me was like the filmmakers wanted to leave it open for a sequel but have it temporarily wrapped up, I just thought it was a bit to quick to say Count Olaf was found gulity sent off escaped and etc. Also the whole punishment thing. after the film ended I just sat there, turned to my brother and went "So wait, they killed Jim Carrey three times at the end?", the ending wrapped it up too neatly and nicely considering the whole ordeal before hand, I dunno they could've shown that Count Olaf was still on their ass at the very end when they're driving to their next location, but considering there's 11 books in the series, I guess they needed to provide some kind of temporary ending as I assume the books don't really have any real conclusion, though it's going to be #1 this weekend and will probably make enough to get a sequel going....

Overall a good film, I liked it, even though my brother who reads the books bitched about the adaptation of it [Still complains about what's left out of HP3, blehhh]

A sidenote: Man is TBS rolling out the Jim Carrey marathon this weekend.

Er......they quickly then stated that none of this had happened and that he had escaped without a trace. Miss that part?

Why yes.............yes I did.

Must've been busy drinking some diet pepsi all I heard was the escaped part, I thought he escaped after punishment and found that rather nonsensical, thanks for clearing that up.

Quite alright, they played that bit a lot more quickly than the other "but this is not that kind of story"/"i wish that was what i could tell you" beats in the film.

Well considering A Nightmare Before Xmas, Edward Scisscorhands, Sleeply Hollow, and Ed Wood are on my DVD shelf you know how I feel about this movie.

And that I thought Prisoner of Azkaban kicked Chris Columbus's ass.

All the hate from Critivs for this movie is simply mind boggling, and I havent met anyone who dislikes it, 30 mil is testament to that.

Score was really good just too loud in a few parts.

Emiy Browning next Christina Ricci, and could not believe Paramount and Dreamworks let Brad keep the wedding scence, finally some common sense.

And I have no idea how people thought Carrey was overacting, seriusly watch the Grinch again, or any of his earlier work, this role is perfect for him. And this coming from a guy who generally depises him, ESOTSM aside.

Whats with the simply brilliant credits this year, first Azkaban, then The Incredibles, now this
great work all around

heres hoping for a slighly darker, more focused, same team sequel

I'll be going to see this again with my dad tomorrow. Really fun movie. Emily Browning was probably the most pleasant surprise, though all the adult actors looked like they were having a good time with thier roles. And the subtitles for all of Sunny's dialogue was a nice touch. It's great to see a kids film delving back into the darker stuff, hope to see more of it.

I'm glad the few people here who saw it liked it.

My wife, folks and I caught it yesterday after we opened presents. I was pleasantly surprised, as were the rest of my family. I didn’t realize that Carrey was going to be playing a character who was going to be playing characters while trying to get at the kids. I thought it was going to be one of those deals where the actor plays multiple, different parts in the movie. I hate that crap. I liked the look, especially the funky cars. I also loved that it was dark. I have always felt that kids like a little edge to their stuff too. I was really surprised by the really creepy feel of the whole wedding scene. I also thought that the end bits about Olaf were rushed and I too didn’t catch that he basically escaped without punishment. I'd like to see it again to soak up more of the detail.
