Dust Devil

Anyone else seen the film Dust Devil. I finally plucked up the courage to see it a few weeks ago and just loved everything about it, the music, the setting, the themes, the main lead. Everything in this movie seems almost perfect and it is a movie than in a few short weeks I have watched and enjoyed at least 4 times.

The reason for my fear was the director's earlier film HardWare scared the hell out of me when i was a kid.

The only real problem I have is the ending and the female lead but apart from that this is one of my favourite movies.

Yes, I loved this movie when I saw it roughly ten years ago. Cracking atmosphere and I remember the scene where he burns a house down as being very cool. I would like to see this again on a remastered DVD with DTS since I only had a crappy old VHS (now lost unfortunately).

By the way, I am from Leeds (Pudsey) so where are you in Bradford? I now live in Canada though. Left two years ago. I remember growing up that Leeds and Bradford were pretty much two towns in the same situation, but then a load of cash poured into Leeds and it became very different. I haven't been into Bradford for probably six years. Still a dump?!

A dump with a severe arson problem nowadays. I'm up Bingely way and spend most of my time in Leeds so it don't bother me much.

Yeah Dust Devil seems to have been denied a DVD release everywhere except Germany which I don't quite follow. It is possibly the most beautiful horror movie I have ever seen everything about this movie just looks incredible even the bad guy, who for my book is a true legend of a villain.

Just been looking at some online reviews and it seems you and me are the only people in the world who like it.

Hell yeah, this movie rocks. Richard Stanley was a hella filmmaker, and if I was Avi Arad, I'd pull him out of mothballs for a DR. STRANGE movie. In fact, I'd settle for a sequel to DUST DEVIL.

SPOILERS...

My fave part is when Robert John Burke, so excellent in this, says, "What are ya gonna do, shoot me?" and the leading lady says, "Fuck yeah!" and blows his head up.
It was a nice surprise. I didn't expct much from it, although I did enjoy Harware.

For all of you UK people looking for a decent copy of Dust Devil.... I have a partial solution...

It appears that the film is once again getting shown on FilmFour this morning, and the last time they showed it they used one of the cleanest prints I have ever seen....like digitally remastered style prints...so if you wanting a decent copy at least you might be able to get it at around 3.45 am tommorow morning...
I always wanted to see this flick, but ended up avoiding it cause HARDWARE was so diabolically awful.

Hardware is a detestable mess.... in a good way

But Dust Devil is one of the most beautiful horror movies ever made. You owe it to yourself to at least try and catch it if you can just for the sheer iconography of the Dust Devil himself... I actually think I am gonna stay up and watch it this morning... it really is that good...
I would, but I don't have Film Four and I don't intend to as long as it's a subscription channel.
As I recall, Dust Devil and Hardware (for US distribution at least) were both re-edited with a wood chipper. The edit of DD seemed full of unrealized promise, but it bored me last time I watched -- ten years or so ago. I'd like to see Stanley's cut of each film.

The film four cut is something of a middleground... it lacks the grandeur of Stanley's vision but has a very nice fluidity to how scenes play out....the editing actually really helps this film...
I first saw this film at the world premiere in the (now defunct) Scala Cinema Club on Pentonville Road. After the showing, Stanley took questions from the audience. Interesting guy.

I agree that it's an interesting film, even a great film, but it does have its flaws. Particularly Zakes Mokae, who could easily have been replaced with a Mokae-sized chunk of wood.

I have a copy of the director's cut on video, which I must have bought as soon as it was available. It would be nice to see it come out on DVD.
Supposedly it is out:

No running time listed, though. The same German label also puts out a (supposedly) uncut HARDWARE, but it's fullscreen:

Thank whatever gods answer the prayers of movie geeks. I've been after this on DVD for an age.
Yeah, sure, you could get that German version of DUST DEVIL. Hell, I own it myself. Or you could wait a few months and get the well-stuffed DVD release from Subversive Cinema. Dig it: It's taken from Stanley's own negative, features commentary and deleted scenes, and is accompanied by three of Stanley's cool-sounding documentaries!

Here's a link to one of the most joyful news items Fangoria has ever printed: http://fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=5663

And in even better news, there are rumours that Subversive's working on a HARDWARE package.

Super. Fucking. Sweet.
his movie about the pig is better then both DUST DEVIL and HARDWARE. I think it was called Razorback

Wrong director. Razorback was Russell Mulcahey. Hardware and Dust Devil are Richard Stanley.

Really I though t they are all done by the same guy, but it been about 6 or 10 years since I have seen any of them.
I remember Wetbones disappearing after a huge argument about HARDWARE being shit.

If only the same would happen with Eenin.

Apparently Guillermo del Toro thinks the director's cut of this flick is a masterpiece. Have to check out those links. Thanks, Russ.
Oh, and count me in as a Hardware fan. Such a weird flick. But it has a really cool look to it and is pretty brutal throughout.

Great soundtrack, too. Richard Stanley needs to come out of hiding.
He makes documetaries now.

I sat next to him at the Frightfest in Londaon couple years back. In recent years, post-9/11 he's been a guest at the White House since one of his docs on Afghanistan is one of the key texts in the US overview of how the country operates. Imagine a policy partially based on shot that Richard Stanley himeself films. That's bizarre enough in itself. But he's also been shooting mock horror scenes in Weles to test out army nightvision cameras.

We only ever saw the Dir Cut in the UK I think, or at least we saw a far longer version than the US. It's a great picture. Whatever happened to Zakes Mokae ?

Dust Devil is very similar in tone to The Devil's Backbone and Cronos - slow, poetic, intelligent horror with a strong twist of folklore - so I can see why Del Toro digs it.

Also, Hardware is a blast.
I love both those flicks. Granted, I saw them both years ago and for all I know the versions I saw were cut to shit, but you can't substitute vision on a low budget. I think Stanley's underrated anyway. I loved Island of Dr. Moreau, especially given the conditions under which it was made!
As I recall, Stanley didn't shoot more than a couple of days on Moreau - if that. I know that David Thewlis was only brought in after Rob Morrow quit because of Stanley being fired, and I'm fairly sure that Kilmer switched roles as well, so it's doubtful that anything Stanley shot ended up in the final cut.
I guess there is a pretty good account of what happened - from Stanley's side - in this book:

There is some interesting stuff about it here:

If I recall correctly, Stanley sneaked in to the set of Dr. Moreau after he was fired and he played one of the creatures in makeup.

Good news for UK Chewers. Optimum are releasing their own Dust Devil DVD which, given their previous work, should be a decent copy. I'm hoping for it to be similar to the american DVD which is about to be released but you can never be sure.

Will be interesting to see what it looks like when it comes out in June.
I could've sworn I saw this movie on Cinemax about twelve years ago under the title Skinwalker, or something like that. I don't remember much about it.

I truly love Hardware, though.

This thread reminds me how much I miss the Scala...

I hope y'all caught Dust Devil himself in two of the year's Best Picture candidates this year.

Thanks for the reminder, fabfunk! I remember thinking it wasn't unusual that Robert John Burke would show up in GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK after his scene-stealing work in Clooney's CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, but I was pleasantly surprised to see him as one of the asshole CIA guys spoiling the Israeli assassination attempt in MUNICH.

I dig the hell out of Burke - he's one of my favourite "Hey! It's That Guy!" actors.

Spike, any word yet on the Region 2 DUST DEVIL disc's extra features?

None as yet. Optimum are hard to judge on one hand they do discs like Azumi which had one hour long documentary and one 45 minute documentary as well as cast and crew interviews etc.

And on the other they do discs like A Touch of Zen which are bare bones and hardly optimised whatsoever...

Audio Commentary, Feature Length Documentary, Deleted Scenes, Groovy Box Art and if my friend is right it has a superb transfer.

The 26th June can't come quick enough for me.

We're getting the goods in September- this one's got an entirely different transfer than the british edition, and a different commentary track as well.
Guess I'm in the minority about this flick. It's a somewhat interesting movie with a unique look (and Burke is great), but I guess I really prefer my horror to be a bit less earnest and florid. I don't see the GdT association, he's far more subdued with his craftsmanship -- Devil's Backbone totally creeps up on you. But he can also quite capably go in the complete opposite, as shown by the pure lunacy of Blade II.

Do you get Rescue Me in Australia? Burke's great as Leary's cousin, a pot-smoking ex-priest who keeps him on the wagon. And IIRC he's actually a former firefighter himself.

Is Zakes Mokae's shotgun-wielding cop the same character as in Body Parts?
I've got the first season of RESCUE ME on DVD, and it's approaching the top of my to-watch pile. But I didn't know Burke was in it until recently - looking forward to it even more now.

And that news about the three-disc (!) DUST DEVIL set from Subversive made me squeal like a schoolgirl. I'm waiting for my R2 disc to be shipped, but it looks like I'll be buying the R1 DVD as well. And happily.

Dave's right about the GDT comparisons - I don't really see 'em myself. But I still dig Stanley's work a lot, and hope he gets the chance to make more features.
I haven't seen Dust Devil, but enough reliable sources are praising it here as well as del Toro, so I'll have to check it out. Doesn't sound as if I need to bother with Hardware.
Oh my God.

Between this, that upcoming BLADE RUNNER box and the imminent release of FROM BEYOND, I'm in the throes of a full-blown geekgasm.

And to think I was stoked with the UK set!
Fuck. Ing. Hell.
Is the R1 set available to pre-order from any sites yet?

Without wishing to get all Homer Simpson ("LIMITED?" *reaches frantically for phone and credit card*), I'd hate to miss out if Subversive is really only producing a limited run of this.

EDITED TO ADD: Pre-ordered from the fine folks at Xploited Cinema. $30 bucks with international delivery - sweet.
I apologise for my excessive pimping of DUST DEVIL, but it's hard not to be stoked when a cult title like this one gets such a monster amount of digital love.

Check out this review for proof.

And if the rumours are right, the 10,000 limited run has pretty much sold out.

You can still pre-order it on Amazon for a cool $21.
I was set to order this but Amazon and DeepDiscountDVD say it is a 3-disc set. I thought it was 5-disc. What's the deal?
Pay no attention. It's a 5-disc set.
