I sort of liked it.

December is already turning into a great month for movies. Good to hear about Cassel's performance.
I'll be there opening night
High praise, Nick. I wasn't a huge fan of the original, but we'll see with this one.

I have a feeling I won't like the original that much now.
That's some high praise, Nick. If its as good as you say it is, I'll have to check this out in the theaters. The last one was good, if completely safe.
Interesting.

I despise Soderbergh's 'style', and I found Ocean's 11 to be one of the most worthless movies I've ever seen. I do trust Nick's opinion though. If he loved it this much, I might at least like it. I just may go see it now.

I have a pass to an Ocean's 12 Sneak Preview tomorrow night. Your review just made me pick that pass up and smile even wider than I did when I picked it up last week.

Congrats, Nick. You've got me pumped.

I totally expect a backlash for this review. Most of the people in the Atlanta screening were not thrilled. It may one of those occasions where people say "Nick, I normally agree with yout but...".

Okay, lemme put it this way. If I liked 'Ocean's Eleven' for the chemistry and banter between the characters, will I like 'Ocean's 12'?
Well, Nick's review has definitely got me intrigued beyond limits.
Sounds amazing, but I don't know that this film can live up to your hype, Nick. I'm expecting a life altering event. Out Of Sight was my favourite Soderbergh movie so far, so in my mind you're putting 12 in elite company.

Hopefully the ATL chewers will chime in soon with their thoughts.

I should see the first one.

Glad to hear Twelve is great. This was the one movie I was most worried about this year. I loved the first, but I was hoping the second one would go a different route and not just be a copy of the first.

I must add, since Nick mentioned Vincent Cassel, people should check out La Haine (Hate). His performance in it is just brilliant.

Must...rein in...expectations...

Fuck that, everyone should check out his performance in "Crimson Rivers', where he completely unnecessarily Tekken-fights two guys!

Now that's a star-making performance!
nick i'm curious on what the other people thought of this movie, cause i too loved the shit out of the original and all the characters, so if this one gives you more of the characters, how could it go wrong?
Nick your review has my hopes raised, however I found Ocean's 11 to be a decent way to kill two hours, but is in my personal estimation one of the most overrated movies of ALL TIME. However your review may get my ass in the seat instead of waiting for the DVD this time around like I had initially planned.
Wow... wasn't a big fan of the first one, but now I'm interested. I hope you're right about this being a misunderstood future classic.
Nick's review plus Fred's interview have me wet with anticipation.
You know, my expectations weren't huge for this. It is a sequel to a remake after all. That said, it never expected it to suck, I thought we would just get more of the same. The trailers even make it look like that is the case.

I'm surprised that it could get this kind of reaction from Nick, it needs to something special. Devin did a thread not too long ago about 2004 being one of the best years for movies in quite a while. Here. I mean, even if Nick doesn't agree with Devin about that (which I know nothing about) I think most would agree that it's been a pretty good year. You got my attention.
I enjoyed the first but couldn't understand the need for a sequel even though the first movie pretty ended in a way that said 'SEQUEL HERE WE COME'

For some reason, I couldn't get myself excited about this even after seeing the trailer but if Nick is really that excited about it, I'll be willing to give it a shot, Soderbergh is practically immersed in european style filmmaking.
great review, nick! if it is how you described it, ocean12 probably will directly shoot into my top5 of all time. great to know that there are still brave filmmakers.

can't wait...
I figured everyone would settle on this as a two, two and half stars kind of movie, you know, nice comfort food kind of fair. But I've been really amazed at how much positive stuff I've heard. I guess when you have a cast that strong, the potential always exists for a movie to turn out great.
Damn, that was a cool movie. I didn't spooge over it like Nick did, but I'd have a hard time naming a better way to spend two hours at the theaters.
As was predicted the critical backlash is starting...

Below is the AP movie review.... OH Do not click unless you want spoilers. This lady went nuts, and ruined what seemed like a few good gags. That makes for a lousy review, me thinks! I think I'll find her email address and write her a nasty email now!

AP Review
At least Ebert and Roeper got the gags.
Is it slick? I hope it's slick. What made Ocean's 11 a ton of fun was the fact it was slick.
I saw the trailer for this today with BRIDGET JONES and hated it, so here's hoping it proves me wrong. Unfortunately, I also can't stand OUT OF SIGHT, so I don't know how likely that really is.
The trailer for Ocean's 11 was crap, too.
Wow, Entertainment Weekly gives this a D+. It also is not fairing very well with critics in general according to Rottentomatoes.com. In fact it is only 8% higher that Blade Trinity(though none of the Blade movies have been critical faves). However most reviews have not come in yet.
just saw it and it was fantastic, if it's not doing well with critics than these critics mustn't be familiar with the 1960's french cinematic revolution, hell i'd say they havent seen a foreign film before. often times i'd see someone in the movie driving a car and expect alain delon or a young terrence stamp to be behind the wheel. its that cool.

just checked RT, blade is at 26%, while ocean's 12 is at 63%

The first hour is a little slow and you start to get worried because you figure things out a mile away. Then the second hour kicks it into full gear with a lot of great moments and some outright laughs exist. Do Not let anyone spoil you on the twists. This is best to go in unspoiled because you do figure some things out but not all of them or at least I didn't and sometimes you just can't believe they went there but you are glad they did.

The group I was with enjoyed it. The group in theater 2 was ok with it. I left before group 3 came out. The fun of the movie is the fact that you know they are having fun making the movie not so much the movie itself. If you enjoyed O11 you will enjoy O12.

But as far as I'm concerned, George Clooney's streak of great "O" movies continues.

I'm learning a lot about people from how they respond to this movie.

was checking out the hate for this movie at the IMDB boards, i couldnt believe my eyes. then again i could imagine that a lot of people arent up for something different for once, they also wouldnt be too educated in cinematic styles like this. its a shame.

Wow. I remember last week you trashed SIGNS.

Just when you think you know someone from the internet...

Amusing how EW exploited the Ocean's 12 cast on two different covers and then crapped on the film. Fred's O12 interviews on the main page were a hell of a lot better than the stuff I read in EW. I'm not surprised, I'm just sayin'.

I just have to become a cock. If people don't see what they were doing with this, they should be portrayed by Jamie Foxx. I'm already seeing the lazy argument that they just sleepwalked through the sequel.
Just got back from it. Thought it was really fun. Not sure if I like it more than the first yet. Important decisions like that need time to stew around. Don't know how everyone else liked it. The younger folk were laughing. On the way out this guy who was in his 50s-60s randomly commented to me that "Don't know about you, but that was a sorry movie." I just kinda shrugged and went on my way.
I can see that they had a lot of fun making this film but I didn't like the plot device after plot device routine. Clever camera work, not so clever script.

Spoiler: And it all came down to switching a bag? WTF?
I'm glad I was WRONG in that Best of 2004 thread.

I didn't like the first one THAT much, and thought it was going to be the same with the sequel. When Nick said it was different, then that left hope. Wow, was he right.

SEMI-SPOILERS

I loved it. It was so great, I swear I grinned throughout the film. My favorite scene besides the Julia Roberts thing and Topher Grace's return(DAMN THAT KABBALAH!!) is Vincent Cassel's beautiful display of acrobatics. I LOVED IT. Best ever. And yeah, overall, Cassel was just the best. But that scene just got me. And less Andy Garcia was good too. Although his scenes surprisingly worked really well.

END SPOILERS

I'm not sure if I liked it as much as Nick, but I'll be standing with him on the good side.

*****SPOILERS*******

I actually liked that.

The "NightFox" Cassel was so clever and so intensified, in this "game" as he saw it, stealing that damned egg, that he went to many lengths to get it. He did.

But shocked that, in contrast, the group only had to switch a fuckin' bag on a train. During some simple diversion. I loved it.

END SPOILERS

SPOILERS!!!!!!

the one thing that disappointed me was how a lot of the group turned out to be useless this time around. in fact the asian guy was there for no reason other than to have that bag joke in the film.
They used him for the SCUBA diving thing as well.

But I understand what you're saying.
Yeah, the only disappointment was the lack of some significant screen time from the original 11 (Bernie Mac, Livingston, the Utah Twins) but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I want to go see it again to follow all the clues when they got dropped the first time. And any movie that makes me want to back to the theater and see it again is, fundamentally, IMO a great film.
