The horror channel wars!

Who do you want to win? Right now I'm pulling for Fangoria TV or Joe Bob's Scream. I month ago I would have said THC but not anymore. I know that it appears that THC is the front runner but we really don't know that for sure. We really don't know anything about any of them at this point. Only how we're treated when we're there. I may be backing the underdog and it wouldn't be the first time. So who do you hope wins?

This isn't a question for the staff of any of the channels, we know who you're backing.

I don't really care who it is as long as it's the channel that can provide the best horror programming.

And they show up on my expanded cable.

Amen to that one!!!!! Of course I know that's a fantasy. Back at the beginning of October, I asked my cable company about THC and they'd never even heard of it.

Your cable company has heard of The Horror Channel, Nightmare. Around when the idea for the channel was announced, TV Guide gave the idea a "Cheers" in their "Cheers & Jeers" column. People are paying attention. Whether or not The Horror Channel achieves its grand ambitions or not, people do know of the idea. I guess people at the cable companies don't want to do their jobs and pretend they just don't know anyhting. It makes sense, really. They can't offer it yet, so they can't take anyone's money for the channel. The idea of good public relations to those assholes doesn't mean anything.

I can believe that people that answer the phones at the local branch of a cable company of never heard of THC or any other channel. I have talked to some that said they would check to see if they carry it, then go on to say "we don't have it right now but I can put in a request." Unless you talk to someone in programing or a horror that's what I would expect.

I would like to see Fangoria win this fight because if anyone has put in the time it's Fangoria. With all of the "cons" and the mags for the last 25 years no one would know the fans and horror any better. They have been there for horror fan through thick and thin. Most of the horror directors of today grew up with Fango. The classic modern horror directors like Romero and Craven and writers like Stephen King wouldn't be where they are today without Fango. If anybody should be able to have a horror channel for the fans it would have to be Fangoria.

That said, I will watch the channel with the best programing.

For me to have any interest in a horror related channel, the film MUST be:

- uncut

- uninterrupted

- shown with respect, and better yet, with some history and serious commentary ( I really can't stand the faux-hillbilly / comic / disrespectful bs )

Also, I'd like to see soe classic series like DARK SHADOWS or ONE STEP BEYOND in addition to original programming of equal quality ...

Whoever is able to do that, or at least try, that's who will get my interest ...

Then why waste the time rambling on like a deranged fanboy cheerleading for one channel over another?

I think THC is gunna pull through on this one. They seem to have spent a huge amount of time trying to get to as many providers as possible and the people they have working on in are genuine horror fans. They may have missed a deadline or two but is that any reason to give up hope? Hell if it was I never would have got out of grade school.

THC says they care about the fans and that they are. Would you expect anyone going into this kind of business to say otherwise?

I may sound like a fanboy when it comes to Fangoria but I have been reading it for years. So maybe I am a fanboy. I'm ok with that.

The facts remain. Fangoria/Starlog Press has been in the horror business for about 25 years. That should mean something. You don't do something for that long and no know something about it.

THC says that they go to the conventions and talk to the fans. They offer that as proof that they are fans. Fangoria has been putting on conventions. I have yet to hear about a THC convention.

THC has put alot of time into the channel. They may know more about running a TV channel than everyone at Fangoria put together. But my guess is that Fangoria knows much more about what the fans want. I hope the channel that knows it's fan base is the one that stays. Not the one that has the biggest launch or most experence in TV. With 25 years of business behind them I would think that Fangoria knows it's fans and what they want.

Have you been over to the Horror Channel boards? There are several people who post there who are working on the channel and they are obviouly fans. I think they know what we want.

Yes, I've been there. I've became a member last may. I also followed the Sci-fi channel before it's launch and would have thought things would have turned out better. The truth is it wasn't bad the first couple of years. I know some of them are fans, Uncle Creepy, Ryan Rotten, Johnny Butane, and Bill Johnson to name a few. They may even know what horror fans what, the question is will they and can they give it to us.

The man behind the Scream Channel was partners with Nicholas Psaltos, the Founder of THC. Scream's program director is Joe Bob Briggs. His life has been about movies. He has written books about them and has had more than one show of his own. Between the two of them they may know what horror fans want.

Lloyd Kaufman, founder of Troma films already has a show in production on Fangoria TV.

I won't go over the history of Fangoria. As a horror fan I'm sure you know them.

Lloyd Kaufman, the founder of Scream, and Tony Timpone of Fangoria all have something in common. They all backed THC at one time. Now they are working for other channels, I don't think that would happen if all was well.

I just read the FAQ at THC. It says in part that an online THC will launch in early 2004, they should be launching an online story by the 2003 holiday season, and we all know about the Halloween 2004 launch date.

These guys may know what horror fans want. They may know what they're doing, but I would think that with all the years of experence that these guys have between them that they wouldn't make promises that they can't keep.
