Drugs? Even more of a reason for them to go away.

The comic book listing is a really big generalization. I'm certainly not the first to say this, but most people don't have a problem w/ comic books, they have a problem with superheroes.

My pick? It's a hard choice with Buffy, Star Wars, and Star Trek fanatics as a target, but I'll have to pull the trigger on Trekkies.
I remember reading about Trekkie parents who had their child taken away from them because he/she couldn't speak english...only Klingon. That's so goddamn severe & disgusting, it's totally indefensible.

I have no idea where you guys got the idea that the anime fans are the worst.

I´ve spent 3 years running an anime website and many, many more in a sci-fi group, where i ran more than 10 conventions (for Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5) and wrote a few dozen pieces for a sci-fi fanzine. I´ve been in 7 or 8 anime conventions. I have friends who run table RPG meetings, i´m a comic book fan since childhood, i´ve written comics, and i have friends who are crazy Tolkien fans. I consider myself a fan of each group (except RPG).

But i can´t agree with the anime fans being the worse.

I´ve never seen any of them learn a fictional, useless language (Tolkien/RPG fans, Trekkers).

I´ve never seen them trying to live like fictional characters, following fictional moral codes like Star Wars fans (and Trekkers).

I´ve never seen anime fans attempt to create a religion like the Star Wars fans did.

I´ve never seen them break into fights in the middle of a mall out of something that happened because of a card in a table or a dice being thrown (RPG).

I´ve never read in a newspaper of any of them dying from living in a fictional world for too long (RPG).

I´ve never read in a newspaper of any of them killing their friends because of something that happened in a fictional world (RPG).

I´ve never heard of any anime fan changing their bodies with plastic or dental cirurgy to become more like a fictional character (Trekkers, comic fans).

I´ve never heard of an anime fan that would treat you like shit because you don´t like this or that author/franchise/faction (comic fans, SW fans).

Frankly, i´ve had trouble carrying conversations at least once with Star Wars, RPG and Trek fans.

I´ve been ashamed of things Trekkers and RPG fans did in my presence.

There´s just no comparison. The anime fans are the most harmless of the bunch, closely followed by Tolkien fans. The worst are the Trekkers and RPG fans. SW and comic fans are middle of the road - they´re bitchy and get into arguments every two seconds.

With or without cosplay, you don´t see anime fans that actually dress, live and talk like klingons. They don´t kill each other over games and they don´t create bullshit religions or languages. They don´t instantly judge you for not liking the X-Men or Jim Lee. They also can talk to the oppositte sex, something you can´t say of most of the other groups...

Since the Transformers news has been bubbling up a bit more on the internets lately, it's probably time to add Transformers fans to the list. I haven't seen such an annoying group of manchildren in a long time.

From you, pretty much.

This is more of an anti-fandom than a fandom, but in terms of "most annoying people to interract with on the internet," right now I'm going with Tarantino Haters. There's plenty of people out there who hate Star Wars, The Matrix, LotR and Whedon, or who pounce on any opportunity to get in a good zing on them, but the anti-Tarantino people are so compulsive about it. If anyone mentions, even in passing, the name Tarantino in any thread in any forum, they HAVE to jump in and launch into a tirade about what a hack the guy is. This usually includes a list of every one of his films and their reaction to each one.

I agree, but they are balanced out by some ,not all, of the Tarantino fans for whom he can do no wrong.
I think every fandom has it's more reasonable people, and a crazy element.

I went for Trekkies.... but with the caveat that its really only the trekies(ers?) that can't seperate fantasy from reality... those guys scare me big time....

I did some graphics work for a Con here in the UK and stayed overnight at the hotel where this con was taking place having delivered the tape late. Not so bad I thought, until I found that because I wore a black shirt I found myself surrounded by Trek nerds accusing me of being a B5 Psicop spying on their con for some rival.....*shrug*.... group.

Then, much to the amusement of the bar staff, these freaks began to pester me to read their minds or some crap... to which I made a hand gesture and said something like "I read your mind and its illegal to do that with animals"

And rather than get a laugh I spent another 10 mins with the lead nerd accusing me of being a fraud because I wasnt psychic and I had apparently got the mind reading utterly wrong....

Five more minutes of embarrased silence from me as I sipped my beer while these guys whacked on about finding a "blind" psycop ended with me telling them to fuck off and see if they could find their spaceship that could take them back up uranus.....

To which the final curt reply was.... Our ship is in orbit, thats why you can't see it.....

Fanboys.... everyone is one, myself included, but you have to know when to stop.....

BTW I've never been to a con since......

If there was one fanbase I don't get, it has to be "Highlander". I remember seeing the first movie when I was little and hating it. I later saw the second one and hated it also. It seems like a cool concept but from what I've seen, it looks like they've blown it every step of the way.

But if there's a fanbase that's pissing me off right now, it's the one for "Silent Hill". I'm a regular visitor to Roger Avary's website and ever since he announced that he was going to write the script for the upcoming movie, his site has been swamped with SH fans, telling him what's what on his own site and telling him not to "fuck it up" as they say.

Just recently, one of them asked about who was composing the music for the film. The other regulars on Avary's site got him to think that Roger had convinced Husker Du to reunite and compose the score.

Learn to read. There are gradations in all things. Anyone who elevates Star Trek V to the level of Star Trek II is, in all probable fact, a nutter. My point is still valid, and I think fair: when a fan loses taste simply because x fulfills their fan needs, then their opinion and taste is suspect. As has been put on this boards numerous times, there is a difference between objective and subjective, and if a viewer can't seperate the two, then well, there you go. There's nothing wrong with enjoying films that are not stellar if they tickle your fancy. The problem rises when you don't know enjoyable vs. great.

Star Wars fanatics have become the lamest, by huges leaps and bounds. Even so, I voted for the anime geeks. There's just no way to defend cosplay or hentai. Anyone who likes watching cartoon women with saucer eyes and watermelon tits get tentacle raped was some serious issues.
I agree on the comment about Highlander fans. That's about as odd of a fascination as you get. Can we add in Goonies fans, Transformer fans and GI Joe fans too?

Also, not that I'm defending Buffy nuts, but it cracks me up how often I read someone slagging Buffy and then admitting that they've never actually watched the show.

I agree on "Highlander". The first film was a good idea with mediocre execution....Sean Connory was easily the best thing about the film....but everything after that was junk. How it got such a huge following is beyond me. With most film or TV shows that have fanatic fan following, I can understand why they have a following however much I dislike the fan silliness, but Highlander puzzles me.
The Silent Hill fans are a good example of one of most irritating, to me, traits of fandom today:The Rise Of The Wannabe. SOme kid who has never touched a camera in their life dictates to experienced film makers how to make a film.Ridiculous.

You want to know what the bigger problem is with message boards? People who can't back their opinion with anything more than "Well, I liked it," and then insist that they're being insulted when people disagree with them. That is a discussion killer, and it is offensive to me in the sense that if your argument is that we're all subjectively right, then why say anything in the first place?

What gives an opinion weight is the reasoning behind it. If someone can give an argument why they like Star Trek V more than Star Trek II, they may very well have a point. If someone likes all Star Trek and thinks V is as good as II simply because it is Star Trek, then they are not being critical. But if you are to present any opinion, and especially a contrary one, expect to back it up or not say anything, because if you can't back up how you feel then why say anything on a message board?
Because, like, you have an opinion, and stuff. And my opinion is as good as yours!

Enjoying something and recognising its quality are two completely different things. I enjoy the hell out of FLASH GORDON, but realize it sucks. On the same wavelength, I think REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is one of the best pictures I've ever seen, but I didn't enjoy it one bit.

Growing up seems to be relative.

Thats like assuming every western film fan must religiously watch and like hardcore porn where women with saucer eyes and watermelon tits get raped. Hentai is just a perverse offshoot of the anime medium, like hardcore porn is of, well...live moving pictures. Cosplays are however cheesy, but at the end of the day its just people dressing up, not literally attempting live out fictional characters' lives or anything, not like the Trekkers and SW fans. So I agree with Orin_Quon's post above. The majority of anime (as in animated films and TV series, not necessarily friggin hentai porn) fans are pretty normal people from every age range and both genders and dont do embarrasing things like the other fanbases listed above.

At the end of the day, every type of entertainment has a group of fans who go deep and get lost, and as far as I can tell, the series of Star Wars and Star Trek both have the largest fanbases of people who are completely fucking lost. Not sure which has the most though...

So you're saying anybody who likes Episode III enjoys it just because it's Star Wars. Fine, I loved the hell out of it. But doesn't that fly in the face of the fact I thought Phantom Menace was just okay and Return of the Jedi sucked? They're Star Wars just as much as Revenge of the Sith is.
Am I that much the Episode III hater that it's assumed I'm talking about Star Wars? My point, which is still valid, is that there are people who give things a pass simply because they love the whole, and cannot be critical of an element of it. Completists, they're called. In the Star Wars world they own the Droids cartoon DVD, in Star Trek they own V.

People are now hemming and hawing at my point, and accusing me of things that cannot be infered from the text. If you want to feel persecuted for liking shit that a majority don't, that's fine. But why talk about it if you can't defend it? And when a debate goes from the topic to the personal it usually means that you cannot argue with my logic, and therefore must retreat to insults to feel better. Sorry I hurt you, daddy still loves you.

Is it time for me to go back into the Star Wars closet again? Like back in high school, in the late 80's/early 90's, when it wasn't cool to like the old Star Wars movies?

Just like gay people can't help being gay, I can't help liking the SW prequels. But if I make that known it invalidates my opinion for many because I'm considered delusional. Maybe I'm sinning against God too, and there's a special camp I can go to which will teach me how to supress my unhealthy fondness for Attack of the Clones?

Disney fans are the most hardcore. They convinced Roy Disney to leave the company and join them and brought down Micheal Eisner through bitching and internet petitions.

I think there is a difference between being a "fan" and being a stockholder who sees your stock in Disney decline in value because of bad management and takes action to protect your investment.
Right now the lamest fanbase going are the hardcore Guy RItchie fanboys. They seem to be reduced to insulting anybody who does not care for "Revolver" Ritchie's latest, with the old fanboy reliable "you Don't like it because you are too stupid to understand it" routine.
Since the film has had a disasterous premier at the Toronto Film Festival, and has been almost universally panned by the UK critics, and generally negative audience reaction, that means the fanboys are insulting just about everybody except fellow RItchie fanboys.
ah, the 'what you like' vs. 'what is well made' argument. always interesting.
The question, i think, that must really be adressed is: Which fanbase could kick all the other fanbases ass?
The Wheddonites clearly, are the biggest wusbags so it wouldnt be them
Those Doctor Who fans seem pretty sturdy, and handy with a chain and brick-bat.
I'm not sure it guailfies as lame but the Star Wars fans I know at my college are so insecure with the plot holes in the series that if you point one out to them they really go over the top. Making you almost afraid that while you're in class they'll be outside cutting the brake wires on your car.

The recent shennanigangs on the site have made me want to cast my "Lamest Fanbase" vote towards the Browncoats.
The site that featured a critic that mentioned Browncoats had cracked the shits at him because he didn't praise Serenity enough, was just one of the most ludicrous fan-related things i have seen for some time.
I mean, Jesus.
The fact they are so rabid about something there is so little of that is so recent is kind of weird.
The past week has left little doubt as to who the winner of this poll is.
Yup, in the past week the Browncoats have staged an upset and pulled out way ahead of the usual suspects... "Star Wars" geeks, THe Trekkies", The Matrix Crowd etc.
But it's a marathon, not a splint, and whether the Brownshirts have the endurance to continue to make fools of themselves on a constant basis is still a unknown factor. But they have put on a most impressive sprint, even getting mentioned in the mainstream entertainment media with their antics.

I remember a Star Wars fan on the Early Show making this statement about Episode 2:

"I've been waiting for this movie since I was conceived!"

Tsk.Tsk.
