Didn't like Alexander? That's because you're stupid says Stone - Page 2

Though I hate to encourage further conversation about how Alexander was so awesome he ejaculated golden lightning, on the subject of his being effeminate, I do recall something about Philip trying to toughen his son up because he was afraid he was becoming a "κίναιδος". It's very well possible that he butched-up for the sake of appearances, but I imagine he probably did have a little Nathan Lane inside of him just waiting to burst out.

Absolutely correct. Stelios has no real historical basis for any of his claims about Alexander's masculinity. The record is awash in accounts of Alexander's manliness being doubted by Phillip (though Alexander proved him wrong, such as in the Buchephalus incident), or Alexander displaying open affection to eunuchs such as Bagoas, to the consternation of his men, ETC ETC

The Greek media had a anti ALEXANDER field day when the movie was released in 2004, due to regressive attitudes about homosexuals in that country, but as noted Alexander historian Robin Lane Fox is quick to point out, they were way off base

PS It is incorrect to say Alexander was gay though, as Stone/Fox discuss on the DVD. Eunuchs are a third gender, and there is no evidence to suggest he and Hyphysitan were adult lovers

That discusses a "lawsuit" that was filed in Greece suing Oliver Stone for "damaging" Alexander the great because Stone correctly suggested that Alexander had an intimate friendship with Hyphystian as a young man, and later slept with Bagoas a Persian eunuch

"we don't hate homosexuals", they assure us, even as their outrage flies in the face of the historical record

PS I am going to return to comment on Cylan Baby's thoughts tomorrow, but just wanted to clarify my criticism of Greece now

Kate, when was the last time you had your mind changed on a topic in any way shape or form by another chewers point of view around here.

Seriously, has it happened yet?

Yeah but maybe Philip had weird ideas about what "masculinity" means. And Eunuchs are men who've been castrated, so they can't be referred to as a new gender.

I still intend to return to comment on Cylon Baby's thoughtful points when I get a chance (Saturday I hope), but for now I just wanted to share this comment from the Chicago Tribune's glowing review of ALEXANDER. Though an excerpt of the review appears on the DVD jacket for the THEATRICAL CUT release, I like this much more:

Quote:

It's as if a great psychological film spectacle such as David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" had abandoned all restraint, been stripped naked and fallen into hell

How the heck you don't put that pull quote on your DVD is beyond me!
