Alternate Marvel Movieverse

There's nothing I hate more than seeing Marvel films being paired with hacks and newbies, something we've been seeing a lot recently. I know that somewhere, in some other, far cooler dimension, where Bill Pullman is president and John Wayne is still alive, Marvel would be seeking out Hollywood's best and brightest to make some of the best genre films ever created. Here's what I would have liked to see:

Avengers (Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Black Widow, Iron Man): Steven Spielberg (yeah yeah yeah, I know, but it's an alternate dimension remember)
Black Panther: John McTiernan
Black Widow: Brian De Palma
Blade 3 (with Morbius as the costar): Alfonso Cuaron
Captain America: Kerry Conran
Daredevil: Alex Proyas
Deadpool: Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez
Deathlok: Wachowski Brothers
Dr. Strange: Guillermo Del Toro
Elektra: Edward Zwick
Fantastic Four: Pixar & Brad Bird (instead of them doing the Incredibles)
Ghost Rider: Gore Verbinski
Hulk: Roland Emmerich & Dean Devlin
Iron Fist: Prachya Pinkaew (director of Ong-Bak)
Iron Man: Tony Scott
Luke Cage: Antoine Fuqua
Namor the Sub-Mariner: Terry Gilliam
Nick Fury, Agent of Shield: Michael Mann
Punisher: Joe Carnahan
Silver Surfer: Pixar & Brad Bird (a spin-off after his role in the FF sequel)
Son Of Satan: Stephen Sommers (on a limited CG budget)
Spider-Man: Sam Raimi (this one is fine)
Thor: Peter Jackson & WETA Workshop
Werewolf By Night: John Carpenter
Wolverine: David Fincher
X-Men: James Cameron (Singer did a competent job, but you can't beat Cameron), and then after a couple movies Ridley Scott

Any suggestions/comments/ideas?

All I know is that Aaron Eckhart is Captain America, and Guy Pierce is Matt Murdock.

No, sir. I don't like it one bit. A lot of the choices don't seem to make any sense.

Now, here are my choices to criticize:

Daredevil - Joe Carnahan or Brian Helgeland
The Hulk - David Fincher
The Punisher - Michael Mann
The Fantastic Four (retro 60s Stan and Jack style) - Kerry Conran
Dr. Strange - David Cronenberg

The Marvel stuff should be kept at a steady pace, not too much. The last thing Marvel Films needs is a fuckup on the level of Superman III or IV.

No matter how bad you think Batman & Robin is...Superman IV is a canker sore of a movie.

(The DC is a much better film than the theatrical IMO, but maybe that's better suited for another thread). Despite the fact Proyas did the comic book thing with the Crow and since this is an alternate universe, this has my official stamp of approval.

Martin Campbell should have directed several of the films that they made. He's a great actiuon/adventure director, and he shoots them all with a lot of class and seriousness. "Daredevil", "The Punisher", and especially "Blade Trinity" could all have benefited from a more experienced hand.

John Ottman should have scored "X-Men".

Guy Pearce, Edward Norton, and a few others should have been Daredevil. I am one of the few who think Affleck actually did a pretty solid job, but he himself wasn't as gritty and offbeat as the film needed, and it all sort of went from there.

Edward Norton is a good actor, but he just doesn't have the right sort of voice. He sounds a little too reedy to make a believable superhero.

Daredevil, directed by Stephen Norrington (come back, Stephen! We promise we won't let Connery or Don Murphy anywhere near the set this time!):

MATT DAMON as DAREDEVIL

...versus BEN AFFLECK as BULLSEYE

with a shaven-headed STEVEN SEAGAL as THE KINGPIN

PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN as FOGGY NELSON

TOM BERENGER as BATTLIN' JACK MURDOCK

and ALEXA DAVALOS as ELEKTRA

Jeez, Stormin, something I said?

All I'm thinking is Seagal's a pretty hefty guy who can deliver some semi-proficient martial arts moves (if he bothers to put a little effort into Daredevil's fight scenes). And he could have a decently shaped bald head under that damn rug he's sporting.

Now we all know Seagal's a right prick in real life, and there are probably many better choices to play the Kingpin, but I just can't resist the opportunity to provide a comeback role.

So disengage that bomb vest, will ya? Hey, what are you doing? No, get away, Stormin! GET AWAY!

Point taken, Stormin. It is, after all, Seagal we're talking about. Excessive force is probably justified.

As a peace offering, how about Alfonso Cuaron directing this guy...

...as Dr Strange?

Or Phillip Noyce directing this chap...

...as Black Panther?

Del toro is perfectly fine on Hellboy, though if he could do 2 then Doc Strange would be good......

Bruce Campbell would be SOME Spider-man villain, the Lizard.........actually wait on this alternate universe Campbell would cost $20 million.

and if Pullman is pres, is god Roland Emmerich?

Alternate Marvel movieverse? Let Mark Steven Johnson release his freaking cut of "Daredevil"! Much better action, more violent and gritty, a nice subplot involving Murdock's out of costume abilities, and tons more Foggy Nelson. If it was the original cut, I think the opinion of it would be very different. MSJ really got a ton of flack for this, but if you watch the director's cut where everyone is almost shockingly honest, its the producer Gary Foster and Avi Arad who come off as the corporate retards screwing with a new director's surprisingly good film. Foster even says that he wanted less of the "intellectual dramatic stuff" in the film.

Here's a what if? Patrick Stewart says no thanks to "X-Men", and Singer has to find someone else. He was such the obvious choice, but what if he said no? I think you then go to Ben Kingsley for sure. After that, you get creative with other classi thespians who are less hair challenged.

"I think you then go to Ben Kingsley for sure"
It will give Kingsley a chance to redeem himself after disgracing himself with "Bloodrayne". Anybody who stars in a Uwe Boll film needs to do some heavy penance, man.....

I like to think of it as the film that everybody signed up to make. I didn't hate the Theatrical Cut when I first saw it, but I realised that it had flaws. The DC is better in almost every way (I'm not sure, but they even seem to have cut around some of the worst special effects, making them less noticeable).
Its as much of a true director's cut as any film I've seen. Almost a completely new film. They tone down all the stuff that didn't work, and accentuate the stuff that did. Its by no means a masterpiece (nothing can erase those Evanesence songs), but it is a very solid superhero flick in the DC.

I agree with almost everything you said, Stormin.

I though would rather have Brian De Palma do a Captain America film just because of his mastery of dramatic angles to further a storyline, his use of dramatic juxtapostion to connect complex plotpoints and his gritty tones of color he uses to enhance the visual spectrum. With the right actor and budget, De Palma could let the score or the "moment" do more to tell the tale. Aaron Eckhardt is a solid choice for Captain America, but I don't know if he would be my choice. I honestly can't think of an alternate maybe Neal McDonough if he's tall enough. Maybe Brad Pitt (He might be to old and not bulky enough. Will he beef up? That's the question.)

Also, Michael Mann proved with Collateral that he can do run and gun grit with the best of them, so I think he'd suit Punisher more.

If not Michael Mann, then Tony Scott, for he too proved that he owns in the vigilante justice department with "Man on Fire".

But, if this was in an alternate universe, I would be as rich as Bill Gates, handsome as Matt Damon, married to Jennifer Garner, Dennis Haysbert would be President of the United States and a blonde haired man named Jack Bauer would be protecting the freedom of every U.S. citizen alive.

But, that's my world. You can come live in it if you want. I'll bankroll you for 200 million you get you started. See, I'm a nice guy.

AND THE WOMEN!!!!! THE WOMEN WILL RAIN FROM THE HEAVENS, ME BOY!!!!

I know this is going to be a kind of left-field suggestion, but it IS the alternate Marvel Movieverse...

I saw House of Flying Daggers over the weekend and was thinking that it would be inevitable that Hollywood would want to drag Zhang Yimou into the fray of US-made big budget action movies. Not that he'd want to do something like that, but I imagine there are talks in Hollywood every day about projects that would waste his talent on over-stylized buddy cop-fu movies. But what if he was given the reigns to the Wolverine movie?

You don't need to know all of the X-Men comics to make a good Wolverine movie, you just need to know the Wolverine mini-series where he fights the ninjas. You can take Wolverine out of the "Mutant Menace" storyline that the X-Movies have established and give him a proper tragic samurai kind of treatment. He meets the love of his life, he tries to get away from all of the X-Men madness, but winds up sucked into the world of Yakuza, ninjas, and all the way of the warrior, then she dies, he seeks revenge, and eventually is left to wander alone. This is not only the kind of story that Yimou has already tackled twice with his two biggest US successes, but it is the kind of thing that would add depth to Wolverine in the movie world, and give Marvel a chance to make a serious and artistic film with one of its properties that wasn't all about explosions and shit. Imagine the expressionistic art of that Wolverine/Elektra series or something like David Mack's work on DareDevil, but translated to the screen by Zhang Yimou and starring a man with claws and I think it could be awesome.

I always thought The 13th Warrior's Vladimir Kulich would make the perfect Omega Red, and Dennis Storhoi, another 13th Warrior alum, could play a better Maverick than anyone, especially Lambert. (Not to mention the fact that Maverick is a Nordic/Germanic character, can't remember which).

VING RHAMES! Though he would make a good War Machine as well.

After reading the new Astonishing X-Men trade it hit me, Gary Sinise would be a perfect Nick Fury. He's got the look and would make a perfect grizzled old vet.

Have you actually watched the Raimi films? All of your ideas (except the shakey marriage one) have already been done in part 1 and 2.

Red Skull could be played by Jurgen Prognov ,he definitely has the voice.
