ANY controversial public group needs to avoid doing anything illegal -- that's just obvious common sense. Why do you think a true Satanist would need to break the law?
I myself have mixed feelings about LaVey. I suspect that, for him, Satanism was largely just a way to get attention. But I get this impression based on his overall attitude, not on the mere grounds that he avoided illegality.
I'm a theistic Satanist - one who reveres Satan as an actual entity, not just a symbol. (LaVey's Church of Satan, in contrast, does not believe in any gods and regards Satan as only a symbol.) I maintain the following website:
