What Movies Do I NEED?

Hey Everyone

I need to give my DVD collection a good horror section. Please tell me what I need, everything from the classics, good ones, right to the unknows. There are no "rules" in a sense, especially as I have a multi-region set up, so give me the name of the movie and the best version I can get. I want everything from zombies to witchcraft and beyond!

Thanks for your time and help.

I'd disagree with this one, but then I prefer the original version of THE EXORCIST. And the 25th anniversary disc is awesome.

I'd also add:

GREMLINS SE
GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH
PIRANHA SE

S.D. basically took about 99% of MY list , so I'll add what I believe is missing. If you enjoy 80's cheese horror you'll get a kick out of some of my selections.

The Alien Quadriligy (or at least Alien & Aliens SE)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Creepshow
The Gate
Critters
House
Night of the Creeps (To be released uncut on DVD in the US in 2005..YIPPEEE)
Return of the Living Dead (Part 2 if you really like cheese)
Dead Alive / "Braindead" (Uncut version)
Trick or Treat
Zombie (or Zombi 2 as it's also known as) 25th Anniversary 2 disk set

Most of the titles I listed above are personal faves and can be purchased for about 10 bucks each.

You cannot live without C.H.U.D. You can pick it up for less than 8 bucks. The commentary is worth it's weight.

I remember reading it on another site somewhere a few months back, but if no one else heard about this then it must have been a rumor or just BS. Sorry to get people's hopes up. I know I'm dissapointed.

i saw no one mention BATTLE ROYALE

I can't beleive nobody has mentioned "Carnival of Souls". Scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. And it does it with hardly any violence, just pure atmosphere.
And the original 1963 "The Haunting" is another film that scares the hell out of you without raising it's voice, as Stephan King puts it. Avoid the lame, stupid 90's remake, though.

I didn't see salem's lot (1970's version) mentioned.. I think it's maybe possibly the best vampire film i've seen: & i've seen I think probably hundreds. by the director of poltergeist.. i'm pretty sure.

also: daughters of darkness. another really intelligent vampire film. sort of a better & more coherent version of the hunger.

just to give the nod to what some others have said: susperia - the shining (1980) - the exorcist.

*somewhat off-topic: did anyone hear they're thinking of re-making susperia? why? it has no plot.. it's all in the style. are they just gonna rip it off: haha.. frame by frame?

Here are some horror movies I haven't seen mentioned yet that I really like:

Frailty
The Convent
Black Christmas
Black Sabbath
Audition
The Eye
Ju-on: The Grudge 1 and 2
Demons
Videodrome
They Came from Within (Shivers)

Most of the rest I would recommend have already been mentioned

You can't go wong with The Birth of a Nation, the occupant of a certain esteemed office is featured in the opening credits heaping praise on the movie. Given today's political climate, it seems terribly prophetic concerning Southern politics. ( BTW: Yes, I can appreciate Griffith's contributions to the medium of film, which stem pretty much from this work. However, I do believe that it is possible to admire and deplore something on different counts. Kind of like Clinton's views on Karl Rove.)

I just remembered: rosemary's baby. polanski. just a totally different version of satanism than you've seen. very realistic & quite creepy.

rabid by david cronenberg is a vampire film that's genuinely disturbing. sort of vampires in a night of the living dead-ish situation. & a similiar ending & feel to night of the living dead. but I heard cronenberg was unhappy: cuz he didn't have final cut.. & the producers cut it to shit or something. he felt that made it pretty confusing.. still.. it's a pretty fucking effective film (imo).

a movie I just saw on pay-per-view isn't that well known.. but I thought it was pretty creative.. was called death watch. about a group of english soldiers in WWI who take shelter in a haunted trench. not a classic like some of these we're talking about.. but a pretty good movie a lotta people probably don't know.

*i'm not sure i've seen anyone mention the original halloween. maybe it's too obvious. but it's maybe I think the best horror film i've seen (along with exorcist). also.. his (carpenter's) re-make of the thing. & a fellini short called toby dammit (it's on a compilation film called spirits of the dead.. I think). about an actor (terrence stamp) who's cursed by the devil.. & the devil's played by this creepy little girl. it's really good. the other shorts on the film are only ok (but you do get to see bridgit bardot & jane fonda 1/2 naked in them & shit).
