Constantine

I picked up this sneak peek disc sitting in the Best Buy horror section and just got done watching it. It looks really cool. I haven't read the graphic novel it's based on, Hellblazer, hell I haven't even heard of it before. Seems like something I need to seek out though.

Anyway for those like me that don't know it's a supernatural thriller about a man named John Constantine who is trying to get out of going back to hell (he was already there once for a few minutes and I guess didn't like it very much) by excorcising and killing demons.

I realize it stars Keanu Reeves but I like him. I think he's a good action star and was great in The Devil's Advocate so this seems to be right up his alley. It also stars Rachel Weisz as Angela the cop. She's pretty damn hot I think. If you're in BB this week try to grab this disc it's pretty cool and has me looking forward to this movie.

Anyone ever read this Hellblazer?

The only thing that I know about about the John Constantine/Hellblazer comics is that I read somewhere that the character is a spinoff from the old Swamp Thing comics.

As for the movie, I'll definately give it a shot.

I have read it. And the movie is nothing like it.

Constantine is an absolute bastard of a man, blonde and cockney. I doubt the makers of this even read the comic, which is a shame, because it's great shit.

I am all over this...Rumblings have been that "its NOTHING like the comic"..

I ddnt read the comic so I could care less, it looks interesting in a "kinda looks better then end of days" way...

On the disc the director mentions he wants it to not be comicish at all and is going for a realistic look. No doubt fans of the comic will be pissed.

I am to some degree, but then again we're used to being fucked in the ass by Hollywood over comic book movies, save for Singer and Raimi.

Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, and Brian Azzarello. Their Helblazer runs are genius, and that is not a fanboy exaggeration, their work on the book is genius and truly affecting (Ennis' run in particular).

Anyone who said they haven't read the books, needs to give the trades a try. This movie may be decent on it's own, but it's a fucking shame that they've discarded so much of what makes the character and the series special.

Hellblazer trades you need.

Original Sins - Delano
Dangerous Habits - Ennis
Fear & Loathing - Ennis
Tainted Love - Ennis
Damnation's Flame - Ennis
Rake at the Gates of Hell - Ennis
Hard Time - Azzarello

He directed Britney Spears before doing this, and he clearly hasn't a fucking clue what he's talking about.

Looks...like...crap!

Never read the comic but plan to.
Regardless, the trailer looks fucking cool - I'm there come Feb.

Anyone ever watch that saturday morning cartoon where a highschool football team was magically transported back in time and became King Arthur and Co.? I believe it was called Excalibur... it was pretty kick ass. At least, at the tender age of 9 it was.

EDIT: I was so drunk when I posted this, I thought I was posting in a King Arthur thread.

The director has no idea what he's talking about. The movie looks 100 times more "comic bookish" than the book. Running around with a "Holy Shotgun" is both unrealistic and a betrayal of the character. Constantine, in the comic book, is the trickster archetype, not the paladin archetype.

Heh, I was wondering what in the fuck you were talking about.

I'm going to see the movie before I seek out the books. I don't want to be one of those pissed off, anal comic fanboys when I see it.

I think that sums up my feelings perfectly.

I'm not full of hatred at all - Constantine may yet be a fine movie, and the trailer certainly looks interesting, but there is part of me wondering "what if". And you gotta wonder about those early production meetings:

"We need a hard-bitten, rough, 40-something, blonde English bastard..."
"I know - KEANU REEVES!!!"

I'm beginning to hear good things about this one. This might be the first good horror flick of the year.

Review from The Horror Channel........

Okay, I'll admit it. I went into this film with low expectations. Another big budget Hollywood F/X film about heaven and hell helmed by a music video director (Francis Lawrence) who had yet to tackle a feature film and anchored by leading man Keanu Reeves. If this doesn’t sound like a disaster waiting to happen I don’t know what does.

In case you were unaware, Constantine is based on the popular cult comic book series Hellblazer. I have to admit I have never read the comic and didn’t really know much about it. However, I had heard that it took place in London and that the main character John Constantine was British. Apparently that concept was tossed out the window early on, and the character is now an American living in Los Angeles. I’m just thankful I didn’t have to sit through an entire 2-hour plus film with Keanu doing an English accent...Bram Stoker’s Dracula anyone?

This film doesn’t waste any time kicking into gear. The action starts right out of the gate and delivers throughout in heavy doses. There are a few slow spots in the 2-hour-plus running time, but there is actually a story being told that is worth your time.

I have never been a big fan of Keanu Reeves, but I have to say that he plays this role quite well. Constantine is an anti-hero who really doesn't give a damn about himself or the people he is helping. Reeves' performance as the hardboiled Constantine is solid throughout and the best I have seen from him in a long time.

Rachel Weisz gives a very strong performance in dual roles as twin sisters Angela and Isabel Dodson. She is a solid actress who adds a level of believability to the story that, if played poorly, could have been disastrous for the picture. Angela’s love/hate relationship with Constantine adds a romance element below the surface that is performed perfectly by Reeves and Weisz and is very well written.

Actors Djimon Hounsou (Papa Midnite) and Shia LaBeouf (Chaz) also give outstanding performances in their supporting roles, as do other notables Pruitt Taylor Vince (Father Hennessy) and Tilda Swinton (Gabriel). The only real distraction is Bush front man Gavin Rossdale as Satan’s emissary Balthazar. It’s not that his performance wasn’t good, it’s just that if you know him as the singer/guitarist of Bush and husband of No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani, when he appears on the screen for the first time, that is pretty much all you can think about. It was the only moment that took me out of the film; but if I didn’t know who he was, I believe I wouldn’t have given it a second thought.

Director Francis Lawrence has proven that he can deliver a well-paced film that isn’t too flashy and over the top like some might expect from a music video director. I didn’t get a distinct style from Lawrence, but he has plenty of skill and what appears to be a long and successful career in feature film ahead of him.

As far as special effects go this film is packed to the hilt with them. I’m no fan of CGI, and this film does have more than its share, but it seems to work well and not be too much of a distraction. The practical make-up effects from Stan Winston Studios are top notch as usual and blend well with the CGI.

So yeah, I went into this Constantine expecting the worst and came out wanting more. It blends several genres together seamlessly. It delivers horror, action, suspense, drama, and just enough doses of comedy and romance without losing its edge. Constantine is a film that I believe will find a wide audience and another potential franchise for Reeves and Warner Brothers. Move over Neo; Constantine’s in town.

I don't see a Van Helsing similarity at all.

If this movie turns out to be as good as this guy says it is I could really get behind it as a franchise.

It's sounding more and more what I wanted Hellboy to be.

especially since it is a pretty realistic comic book, even the way it treats demons and magic isn't flashy or spectacular. Which just implies that the fucking director never even bothered reading the comics.

That review is pretty much Fluff, and no this doesn't look like VAN HELSING.

I have more faith in this film (and in Sin City, as well) than I do in Batman. Here's hoping they all kick my ass... hard.

Not familiar w/ the comic are we? I just watched some screening special on MTV and the ghastly footage combined with the stupid/bland questions from the TRLish audience nearly caused my head to explode.

After several interviews, trailers and a look at full scenes from the film, it is now totally clear to me that they've castrated the concept & the character.
I'm one of the few movie geeks that doesn't hate (or pretend to hate) Keanu Reeves with a passion, but I have to say that I don't even see a shadow of John Constantine in his performance. I've resigned myself to not really being concerned with film adaptations of my favorite books or comics anymore, but w/ the comic industry facing the threat of extinction in 10yrs time, Hollywood fucking up some of the best of what they have to offer still manages to put a bad taste in my mouth.

Read my sig, a quote from Warren Ellis to sum up what I think will be applicable to Constantine.

In case you wanted to know, the movie sucks. Not horribly, but it sucks. Cable comes acalling.

I saw the movie last night and enjoyed it. I will be picking it up on DVD when it comes out for sure. Also if you plan to see it, stay till the end of the credits, there is something there.

Just saw it. Not worth spending the cost of a ticket, but be sure to rent it on DVD.

Yeah saw this sunday and I really liked it but it's no suprise it's number 2, it's way to off beat for the mainstream audience. I mean the crowd I was with didn't even laugh at the "going down" line. I know it was obvious but come on it was gold!
I actually really enjoyed it. It was a lot more daring than I thought it would be..............SPOILER (highlight)..who would have thought the studio would let them have Keanu Reeves slit has damn wrists in it.

I wouldn't mind a sequel, although supposedly Francis Lawrence might be directing the long-floundering adaptation of I Am Legend next.
Hey, does anyone here who knows HELLBLAZER want to give us a taste on what we'd find in a sequel? I was not a huge fan of this film, but I'd be onboard for another, as long as they bring back Papa Midnite and his pimp clothes and Satan is given a bigger role.
I believe I read somewhere that there was a follow-up comic to the one that they used as basis for the film. I have no clue what it involves though. Like you said, hopefully someone more versed will chime in on this.

I'm an avid Hellblazer fan, and I'll you what's next, a PG-13 rating to goad on more filmgoers. This probably means that you won't get to see John's teenage years as the lead singer of punk panjandrums Mucous Membrane, Lucifer's shattering confession to a priest that promptly drove said priest insane (he would later meet John and attempt to force a blow-job on him w/ a razor blade in his mouth), Constantine's deep and affecting relationship with Irish girl Kat is probably off the books as well, or one of my favorite moments, the fallen archangel Gabriel pathetically licking the filth from Lucifer's shoes in Rake At The Gates of Hell.
Normally id agree with you, hell I hate the PG-13 rating more then most around here and you might still be right but I don't think so. I mean constantine was supposed to be rated PG-13 but they couldn't get one. The way I hear it, it was never really a violence issue it was more due to the religion stuff. Come on we both know they would have cut the flick down in order to get a PG-13 but the fact is they couldn't so they had to put it out as an R. So unless they plan on cutting out all the religion(which is gonna be pretty hard because the story is about a man battling the devil and taking frequent trips to hell) I think they're kinda stuck with an R. And if you consider this movie dark then just remember it was supposed to be PG-13.
