Since it is somewhat realivant to this topic from a while back...

In seems some damn French kid knifed his parents after seeing Scream 3.
From IMDB.COM
"In the latest case of apparent movie-inspired violence, a 16-year-old Paris youth has been charged with brutally attacking his parents with a carving knife after seeing Scream 3 (2000), the London Sun reported Saturday. The newspaper said that the teenager had fashioned a mask and black cape like the serial killer wore in the Scream movies. French gendarmes reportedly found videos of the Wes Craven films lying on the boy's bed and Scream posters hanging on his bedroom wall. After the attack, he reportedly fled the scene still wearing his costume."
This fits with what a few of us were saying earlier... the boy is crazy, true, but the media does play a part.
Just thought is was intereting.

Yes the media does play a part.

As a scapegoat.

"I'm going to do some screwed-up shit, so I'll PUT SOME HORROR MOVIES ON MY BED (Hm-OBVIOUS), tack some POSTERS up, do the screwed-up shit-and the movies will take the blame!"

Like the DJ said-it just makes them more creative-the dumb-ass kid would've still offed his parentals, he just wouldn't have worn a neato costume when he did it.

Don't be ignorant...
You just said part of it. It makes them more creative. That right there shows an influence. The kid is crazy, but he's got a little help. If you think the media has NOTHING to do with it, then maybe you should think about it a little more.
The Media gets a bad wrap, we all know that. People attribute a lot more to it than they should, but jesus man, something is there.

"Ignorant"?

Wow.

Now I'm being insulted by a Moderator.

Sweet.

No wait, it's not-It's bothersome.

I am an artist. When I see someone's work-work that I admire-I endeavor to rise to that.

When I hear music that works, it is inspiring.

People see bodybuilders and are inspired to work out-used to be me.

When I read a fabulous book-my writing improves, because I am a writer and I am inspired.

Now, when someone with nothing in his/her fucking skull but crossed wires sees things-they see them differently. They get inspired-but in a negative way...

For example-You can show Romper Stomper to a group of PEOPLE and they wil say-"Whoa, that's insane!"

You can show Romper Stomper to Nazi Skins-and they'll make with the OI OI OI!"

Oddly enough, the director's intention was the former, not the latter. He hid the real script from local skins, afraid they'd hurt him.

See? Takes a fucked up mind to begin with.

How many copycats of Scream have their been?

How many people saw the films?

I guess the rest of Wes Craven's audience is just waiting for the right moment to pounce.

But, yeah, I'm ignorant. You're right-MOVIES ARE TO BLAME!

And don't presume to tell me how to think-your just heaping insult upon insult. I don't appreciate it.

I think Archie Bunker said it best

"Would it make you any happier if they got pushed outta windows, little girl?"

People are gonna kill one another, take away guns, they'll stab each other, take away knives, they'll club one another. Take away movies, and it'll be just like it was in the thousands of years of recorded history before movies existed.

Man as a species is inherently violent. Before movies there was war, and murder. Jack the Ripper had no movies blame his psychosis on, Vlad the Impaler, couldn't scream insanity. People are gonna hurt, maim, and kill other people regardless of what's on television. Whereas TV might play a part in modern violence, I hardly think you can truly say that it is to blame.
I never said the weight needs to fall on the media's shoulders. I have, however, always maintained that it is a piece to the puzzle. I think you are in agreement when you said Modern TV (and film or other media) might have an infuance but not the total brunt of the force.
I remember a fella saying "...but if that kinda stuff was all I watched, I'd go mad and kill people..." But, how could that be if these films (it was in refernce to Saving Private Ryan) don't (possibly) trigger something is someone.

People are crazy sometimes. That is true. There is bad shit out there and it wont go away. It has been there, it will be there, and we can't do much about it. However, itr happens more often when people are influenced. Jack the Ripper. Maybe his dada beat him or maybe he was just a sick fuck. Okay, but after he did what he did, a lot of others throughout history have copied his actions. This is a form of influence.
A kid in France, who has a lot of problems a thoughts going on in his mind, sees a "great" idea on screen. This is his outlet to do something awful.
I have never said media is to blame for everything. However, it is a part.

D'oh!!! I try to take the blame away from media outlets, and then go and say I would kill people because of it. Weird.

And he totally avoided my post, man!

We cannot win-we're wrong, you see...

I gotta' go-gotta do that slasher movie marathon so I can pick up how-to tips.

Of course-that would be F/X how-to tips from Tom Savini, but that's probably because I'M NOT COMPLETELY FUCKED IN THE HEAD TO BEGIN WITH!!
Sorry that I "avoided" your post. Someone went back and edited their message from 3 lines to whatever it is now when I was writing what I was writing.

However, what else do you need me to say? I'm not going to go edit to add something else in there because it actually addressed what you were adding.

Is there something else you need? I find it funny and ignorant when someone sees a lot of evidence and studies and still wont alter their views in any way. Think about it.

I actually hit "submit" too soom. the whole thing was up in less then two minutes. Sue me.

And where are these studies of which you speak?

Be careful here-you might be dealing with someone who's done a paper or two on this very subject...and I might know of a few studies myself...

Geez, John-Where did I threaten anyone here?

Let me get my cree-ap together and I will share. I hope you don't think there's malice or anger in anything I'm writing here and now?

Because there's not. And I'm not threatening anyone.

Just so you know-I'm not looking to fight you. Debate? Yes-and I think I can make some compelling points-I'm not trying to be AT ALL belligerent. I was mildly offended by being called "ignorant"-but I'm not trying to pick a fight. I like a lot of the things you say, and I don't count you among the Sals and the Jaro conflict and the like. That kind of thing is where the vitriol is directed-not into my posts to you.

If you are truly interested in passing the views around-I'm totally up for that-Let's seriously put something together-but I do think it was uncalled for to label me "ignorant" for having an opinion different from yours.

I too must head to work, but let's put something together, seriously.

My 2 cents:
In a non exact quote (but essentially the same) of RF Laird great author of The Boomer Bible (buy it now):
" The world was created out of the void and creatures came to be, who then formed into apes. One day the apes found some pointed sticks and stuck them into other living things and other apes and yea they decided
they liked to stick pointed sticks into living things."
Nobody cares what really motivates crime, they just want an outlet to push their opinions on the world and the best way so far to do it is to take a tragedy and exploit it by screaming witch, or Judas Priest has subliminal recordings! or those horror films are a bad influence yadda yadda yadda. Then they suck in the truly grief stricken at their most vulnerable and it snowballs from there.

Thank you and pardon me. I'm in the process of digging up all of the research now-the sucky thing is that I have a computer with no modem and webTV-so I have to print and transcribe everything. But I'm at it, and I hope Adam and I can resume intelligent debate in the near future.

see, everybody, didn't that work out nice?
