I just saw "The Eye".

I know this is old news, but I'm a tad late on the Japanese horror craze, and I don't always go for what's new. I found this thing to be surprisingly dull, predictable, and strangely comical (the dead kid and his report card, death as a shadowy mime, etc.) and it felt as if it should've ended three times before it actually did.
I'm mainly posting this because of all of the hype I hear about these movies, and how I almost always have my suspicions confirmed when they turn out to be just another 2hrs of my life I'll never get back.

I'm not a victim of the cultural divide, I am totally aware of the subtle and not so subtle difference between eastern and Western cinema, in fact, 70% of my DVD collection is foreign, but the cultural divide is not to blame for The Eye being a big disappointment.

It reminds me of Haute Tension (High Tension) and how American audiences, who are unaware of its staggering stupidity are going to pay dearly because the trailer for the American release does look cool and inviting, how treacherous.

Sure it wasnt perfect, but I enjoyed it alot, a good effort from the ridiculously named Pang brothers (watch Bangkok Dangerous!). Actually did shit me up at a few points too, there's something about Asian corpses floating around that just doesnt strike me as...normal.

The ending reminded me of Final Destination, kind of...

Sorry, to disagree with you there but I've seen the trailer for High Tension and there was nothing in the trailer to make me want to fork over my hard earned money to see it.

I agree wholeheartedly that this is a flawed film, but I still think the first 45 minutes are the most creepy, atmospheric, and downright scary in recent history. The first encounter scene in the hospital gave me full body goosebumps, and that's never happened to me in a movie before.

My criticisms of this film lie in the fact that after the story progresses to where the main character sees the little sick girl she knew from the hospital, the phenomenon of seeing ghosts isn't scary anymore because she's now seen a loved one, then the movie abruptly transforms into a much less interesting "reoccurence" story. And though the ending was based in part on truth according the one of the extras on the DVD, it still was disappointing. I still think it's worth seeing and I recommend it highly. I think The Pang Brothers have a very promising style and the chops to scare me more, and in classy, non cheap ways, than any other director(s) in the horror genre in a very long time. I can't believe the caliligraphy school scene or the scene in the elevator didn't scare everyone, and not in that gratuitous jump scare sense but in a slowly building dread with payoffs that were uncannily effective.

I didn't find The Eye to be scary in the least. I especially didn't like the Hollywood ending.

I liked The Eye. It's really nothing special, but there are things about it that I found interesting. There are some decent scares, in my opinion. I especially found it creepy when [spoiler alert begins] she discovers that the person she's been looking at in the mirror the whole time really wasn't her [spolier alert ends]. I agree, though, that the ending was pretty bad. That sort of thing might go over really well at the multiplex, but that's not the sort of thing I want in a film that had a good atmosphere through most of the film.

I found The Eye to be excellent - visually stunning, atmospheric, intelligent...although, yeah, it did turn into a detective movie for a long period, before recovering for the climax. Oh, and it is NOT Japanese, by the way.

And actually, I also thought Haute Tension was the best slasher film for more than two decades - no winking at the camera, no jokey references to other movies, just full-on, no-bullshit tense stalking. Great stuff, HORRIBLE AND STUPID ending notwithstanding.
