"1/6th scale" (12") fanmade movie-themed figures/dolls

I wonder how many CHUD-goers know of the 1/6th scale movie toy subculture that exists. Obviously, not many movies get official toys made in the more realistic, detailed 6th scale, so a lot of movie/toy fans make their own out of a combination of existing materials and their own hand-made stuff. I tried to get involved, but it's really not for me. It's still great fun to see pictures of these projects, though. Here are some examples taken from all over the 'net:

(This was taken from http://www.rebelscum.com/tonymain.asp which also features more pictures of Dekkard, Indiana Jones, John McClaine from Die Hard, and tons of Star Wars customs up to the same quality.)

(This was done by an Asian customizer, I believe. He even made the little pig oven mit.)

(These can be purchased and are reportedly of very high quality. Also available are a Batman Returns version and a more comic-stylized version. http://www.sovereignmodel.com/home.html)

(Wong Fei-Hung, if that's not evident. This guy's a very prolific customizer, whose work can be seen at http://dawgestyle.com)

(El Mariachi, same as above.)

Others I have in my folder include De Niro in The Deer Hunter and Taxi Driver, Beetlejuice, an excellent Rambo, a jaw-dropping Oh Dae-su from Oldboy (in battle-damaged and regular flavor) , and more, so it just goes to show that these can not only be very high quality with lots of work put into their fabrication, but also pretty diverse as far as the movies go (as opposed to just movies with huge geek fanbases like Star Wars).

These are insane. I've done a couple custom figures before, but nothing of this scale, level of detail or skill. Customizing is a fascinating hobby but it's also very frustrating, so I commend anyone with the patience and talent to complete a project like any of those.

I mean, I guess. It's almost scary the amount of work put into them.

Unreal! Only stuff I've ever done was to unscrew 3 3/4 Joes and swap parts. Oh, and the Lando headswap on to a Coruscant Guard to have my own Shadow of the Empire Lando.

Most of the 1/6 scale hobby is centered on military figures, which don't really interest me. I did, however, always like G.I. Joe as a kid. I got it into my head last year that it would be a cool idea to recreate some classic Joe characters using the modern gear and uniforms available today.

I stumbled onto a message board where they had just started a contest for people doing the very same thing. Some of the work people put into those things is amazing. Here are pics of some of my stuff from the contest:

You can check out the rest here:

It was crazy expensive and I had to stop, but I would love to get back into it and do some movie characters one of these days.

Hey Eli, I'm a lurker at OSW. Is that or is that not the most civil and friendly message board on the internet? That and Men With Dolls. It always struck me as ironic that toy forums would be the most mature and civilized of them all.

(Nice bashes, by the way. I especially like your Duke.)

Auctions are also routinely run on eBay for this kind of thing, such as a 1/6th scale "Hitcher" figure, whose head incidentally looks more like Mike Nelson than Rutger Hauer to me. Also up were a Last Samurai Tom Cruise with super-detailed plate armor and a high-end custom Darth Vader with light-up chest console dealy.

I'm also going to go ahead and put up a picture of that Oldboy figure in case anyone glazed over the text and missed the link, because it has to be seen:

And as much as I know Equlibrium's loved around here, Customdawg has a very nice Cleric John Preston on display.

edit -

I also just recalled this neat figure that's not fanmade, but fun for Hong Kong movie buffs. He's got the gaudy '80s shirt and a little snub-nosed .38 (I think he resembles Tony Leung Ka Fai, but I haven't heard anyone echo the resemblance). In fact, a lot of the figures made by this Hong Kong-based toy company, Dragon Models, resemble actors. John Wayne, Ed Harris, Nicolas Cage, Chow Yun-fat, Bruce Willis, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, and lots more have all gotten at least one "unofficial" figure by Dragon because the likeness copyrights don't seem to apply overseas. For an interesting browse, check out Famousfigures 1/6th celebrity heads for photographs.

Thanks, man. Yeah the people at OSW are really nice, but I don't make it over there much any more.

That Famous Figures site got me all excited about some of my movie figure ideas again. It's shame I don't have any money at the moment.

I did finish a couple of figures after that contest. You can't see them because I can't seem to make the image work.

Thanks for the pics and the link, Eli. It was a blast seeing some of the more obscure Joe names in that gallery.

Tony can paint! His Harrison Ford figs are about the nicest I've seen, weathering and all.

I do a search on "custom figure" just about once a week on ebay and I've been keeping up with the custom figure scene for a couple years. It really is its own subculture. For a while, it seemed like a detailed, perfect Indiana Jones was the holy grail of 12" figrue customs--everyone was trying to do the best one. But now, yeah, these things are getting better and more obscure (Old Boy!) and it's nice to see, but who's got several hundred dollars for a doll?

I wish there were more female custom figures simply because commercially released female figures almost ALWAYS have a very doll-like head.

I'm sure you know this already, but Sideshow Collectibles has a great 1/6 line-up spanning 10 years. And they just released a whole load of new ones at Toy Fair this week!

Here's the link to their news from Toy Fair: http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/c...ry=0205toyfair

I love their James Bond line. What other companies release good 1/6 figs? I'm really just getting into that size, in the past I have only collected a few (very few) statues and smaller action figs (7"and below). I have more space now!
