Guide me through Hitchhiker's Guide

Never read the guide, and don't know much about it. The movie seems interesting though. Geeks are excited, and it's got Tim from The Office.

So what do I need to know to get the most out of the movie?

Some people are so arrogant that they will cause the universe to collapse...

Read the books? Or at least the first three.

Otherwise think Monty Python and the Trek of the Stars.

that'll be as close as you can get, you know, without reading the books.

Fear and Loathing in the Milky way, perhaps, except replace all the counter-culture with english suburbia.

Just that a towel is the most useful object in the universe. Mice are the smartest creatures on Earth... followed by Dolphins. Humans come in third.

I think So Long and Thanks for All the Fish doesn't get nearly enough love. Definitely read the books (all of them). They're well-written and very, very funny. Plus, you can buzz through them fairly quickly. Hitchhiker's is easily the movie I'm looking forward to most next year.

Gary Larsen meets Star Trek.

It's a trilogy in five parts.

There's a paperback edition with all of the books for around $20.

It's best experienced by reading the books. The way it is written is a big part of the humor.

OK, I'm sold. I'll look for the paperbacks. How long until the movie comes out? I hope I can finish them in time.

Heck yes. They are breezy reads and shouldnt take you longer than a few weeks to get through. That is at a slow pace.

I can't wait for this one either though I will admit to a little trepidation...so much of the humor in the books comes from the word choice and the bizarre, tangential asides...but everything I've seen or read about this project tells me it will be a lot of fun!

Don't overlook the radio series. That's what started the whole thing. Hitchiker's began as a radio series on BBC radio (which only encompasses part of the books, though there is a new series using the original cast that apparently is including material from the later novels).

There is also a television series and a series of albums containing the story. Keep in mind that no two versions of the story are alike. In some cases the chronology of events is entirely different from one version to the next. That's the main reason why people shouldn't get too bent out of shape about the film. If it WERE the same as the novels, it wouldn't be true to the spirit of the story.

Get to the P2P program of your choice, and acquire the original 12 part radio series. HitchHiker in it's original and best form IMO.

I fear for this movie. With Adams sadly passed, I dread to think what monstrosities have been allowed.

What's the betting at some point we hear "it's what Douglas would have wanted" or a variant there of?

They're using Adams' screenplay he penned before he died, with some fine-tuneing by another screenwriter who's as big an Adams geek as you'll ever meet. So chill.

It was a bowl of petunias, and you actually do find out in the third book.

I'm just being haunted by what happened to "Eyes Wide Shut" once Kubrick died. And it's all very well about the other writer... But you know what studios are like. If it's good, fantastic. Something great to honor the man. I just worry that somehow, they're going to mess it up. The casting of Mos Def has already annoyed me. On saying that, Zoe DeChanel (or however it's spelt) as Trillian is genius casting I think.
