Game of Thrones

Anyone read this? Someone I know who never reads swore up and down to me that this book series would change my life. But I'm allergic to fantasy-men-in-tights- type novels....

It's kickass. Closer to medieval fiction than magic-talisman-and-quest-type fantasy, though. It's engrossing, brutal, and constantly surprising. I don't know that it'll change your life, though.

And yes, the men do wear hose now and then.

That whole series is great. Nobody is safe. Just a warning though, the author takes years and years to finish the next books in this series. I can't even remember how long ago his web site said "Almost done with book 4!" And it still says something to that extent.

Only fantasy novels I enjoyed before these were LOTR's. While these books aren't that great their still damn good and absolutely brutal. Every one of these books goes for the juggular. A must read in my opinion.

I'm with these fellas.

These boosk are some of the best "Fantasy" out there right now. In reality they read more like brutal historical fiction with supernatural bits in.

Definitely the best fantasy books I've read. As previously stated, it stays away from the "poor farmboy goes on a quest" style stories and focuses on wars, intrigue, politics, and mystery. The writing is engrossing, it's usually clever when it's trying to be, the plot will keep you guessing, and there are a lot of cool characters to latch onto. A testament to how good the series is, all my married fantasy-reading friends have given these books to their wives and they've all become hooked as well. So unless you only enjoy James Joyce and Danielle Steele, these books will almost certainly entertain you.

Overrated. But you didn't hear that from me.

Dissent!

Yeah, definitely the best series out there right now. IMO of course.

I read these based on the reommendation of people here (another thread) and I have to say, as a life-long fantasy junkie, they're right up there. The flip-side to my delight at the series was finding out about half way through Book 3 that they are by no means finished. Which is a giant and persistent pain in my manhole. 10 out of 10 though. Just brilliant.

Finished the first book. (I read very fast.) Interesting...you definitely get invested into the characters and there's some nice intrigue going on. although for the life of me, i can't figure out why it's so damned long. if you think about it, it's not like there's a ton of plot going on (just a ton of characters)...i'll start the next one, i s'pose. not completely blown away, but since i usually hate D&D type books, it's a miracle i started this one at all.

Just finished the first book, started on the second and have the two parts of book 3 lying on my bedside table.

This is not the greatest thing ever. Don't get me wrong, it's very entertaining, and as someone who never really reads fantasy, I am surprised at how much I like it. But it's pulp. Rather shallow (maybe I'm just not seeing the layers) and sensationalistic (Incest! Rape! Beheadings! Child Murder!), it's precisely what I would expect from this type of book. It's also very detailed, rich in story and epic in scope. I will stick with the series, but as far as the genre is concerned I'll take people's word that it's the best of its kind and take my leave.

I was burned out on fantasy when I first picked up A Game of Thrones, all those years ago, mostly because I was tired of magic being involved in a story. Magic in fiction seemed to me to be, unlike science, a mere gimmick and plot smoother. So the prologue of GOT gave me no thrills. It was in the ensuring chapters that I based my high regard of the novel, and the series, because the magic and traditional trappings of fantasy are jettisoned in favor of political intrigue. At least until the red lady shows up.

I tend to recommend these books to fellow readers, unless they are avowed fantasy-haters.

Just picked this up the other day and I'm three chapters in. I'm enjoying it so far, and it's a very comfortable read. I can invest 5 minutes here and there to read a chapter, and that to me is great. Here's hoping the next few get cranked out before I get to them. I don't really want a long wait like the one I endured with the Dark Tower series.

I just bought it the other night. I have two others to finish first, but I'm looking forward to this one.
