The world has had enough: why James Bond is lame today - Page 2

People who know who James Bond is: Everybody.
People who know who Modesty Blaise is: Comic book Geeks.
It is called "Name Recoginition'.I am not saying the movie about a female Spy could not be a really fun movie, but it would not be James Bond.
Don't forget that the Guardian is slightly to the left of Karl Marx and this spills over into their cultural comments.
If Sony can come up with a script as good as "Goldeneye" and a good actor for the role, and If Campbell can do as good a job directing as his did with "Goldeneye" then the franchise will be reborn. If not it will die, not because the public has a distaste for snobbery (coming from the bunch of intellectual snobs who inhabit the Guardian's arts section that comment is drop dead funny) but because the film will suck. I am getting tired of people, both left and right, who have to read some political comment in every fucking movie ever made.
As for Catherine Zeta Jones as a female spy, well, spies get tied up a lot and I have always had a dark, evil desire to see Zeta Jones in bondage.....

Eh? I'd hate to see what you call actual left-wing papers from France or Italy then. The Guardian is your average centre-left newspaper.

It's a shame that there are dozens of good (and a few great) Bond novels laying around waiting to be adapted. It's arguable that Flemming's original works have never really been captured on screen. The books don't feed on the formula of the movies, though, which seem to think they have to regurgitate everything that came before them.

The Bond books are all hard-edged and rarely rely on gadgets, quips or the usual nonsene the general public equates with James Bond. In the books, he's an unrepentant killer (there's a chilling scene in "No Deals, Mr. Bond" by John Gardener where he shoots an unconscious woman in the head, something that still bothers me.) I suspect that the people bitching here about the movies would probably take well to the novels. They make the movies become 100 percent unnecessary.

" We already know the series is a boxoffice powerhouse, that's not the problem. These are discussions concerning the quality of the Bond films."
Really? I thought it was a discussion about all aspects of the Bond films and it's future as a film series, in which case box office is as revelant as you can get.
But, if that is the way you want to go.,I am not convinced that the character of is washed up as some people think.
If you love Blaise, fine, more power to you...but I doubt the Film industry is going to fall over itself to make a Modesty Blaise film any time soon.

The problem with the new bond films

The simple problem with these Bond films is, as stated before, the scripts, and producers. But I think one of the major problems that has occured especially in the new films is the stunts. They need to take it back to the basics and start doing actual stunts without the aid of CGI. I mean compare Die another Days finale on the plane with The Living Daylights finale. I remeber seeing it in theater and loving every minute of it. When I saw the ending of DIe another Day, I think most people where laughing, including myself which isn't a good sign. Goldeneye at least had the opening stunt with the dive off the Dam which was impressive and the one boat chase. But I have become more and more unimpressed with the overall feel, stunts of the films. I would have loved to see what Tarantino would have done with the franchise. But hopefully, fingers crossed they will at least get the next one partially right and redirect the franchise back into the right direction.

Did I say that?

I don't think you know of the spy project in the works for her.

I've only read a couple of the novels, but I found them much duller than the films. I believe I read On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which drones on and on about Bond's cover as a genealogist (or something), and The Spy Who Loved Me, which didn't contain any cool stuff like submersible Lotuses or steel-toothed henchmen.

I think a somewhat more serious Bond film would work (well, TWINE was fairly serious), but you can't leave out the elements that have made the film franchise a monster. That is to say, things like gadgets, innuendo, and over the top stunts.

Even better then. It sounded much more entertaining than Bond 21.

Found this thread while searching for something about Dalton's Bond flicks. It eventually turns into a casting bullpen, but the first few posts are interesting to see in terms of how much folks had given up on the franchise a short time ago...

After Die Another Day and the continual stupidity of the producers was it really surprising?

Casino Royale was one of 2006's best surprises and i'm glad that Bond is back. Lets not kid ourselves though its not all downhill from here if those producers and Purvis and Wade relax and let the series slide again.

Goldeneye was a great reboot and the other Brosnan films wore out Bond's welcome to many (including me) and Casino Royale has rebooted it again.

I think keeping Martin Campbell would be a wise move.

Dumb thread from the start. Some moron who obviously isn't a Bond fan. Seriously, you have to be a little bit on the homosexual side if you don't enjoy Bond flicks.
