Movie stuff you only just realised... - Page 50

Wow, I need to stop posting on the board late at night and somehow type "Data" when I meant "Geordi". Yes, I am actually literate and can read a memo correctly. What a FAIL on my part.

Hmmm, I never thought he would actually get to play Lennon in a role. I guess that by that point, Yoko didn't give a crap any longer. And to think I've seen the DVD box for the movie at the Blockbuster many times and I had no idea.

BTW, I see that IMDb has changed their layout aside from their main page, and speaking of FAIL... the old layout is much better, I say.

Rhona Mitra =/= Radha Mitchell.

Jenny Agutter as Beverly Crusher! Oh. My. *drool*

Ben Murphy as Riker would've been all kinds of weird.

Too bad for Mark Lindsay Chapman, but he did get that sweet The Langoliers gig after so I guess it all worked out in the end.

Harpo Marx terrifies me.

Paul Thomas Anderson used a Harry Nilsson song for his main theme two movies in a row.

John Cassavetes wrote HAPPY NEW YEAR (1987) as "Warren Lane."

Steve Martin received story credit for the Don Cheadle thriller TRAITOR.

I just finished watching Much Ado About Nothing and realized that the character of Balthasar (the singer in the Prince's entourage) is Patrick Doyle who has composed all the scores for Branagh's directorial outings.

Is anyone else amazed that Predator himself was up for two different roles in TNG?

Alien Nation = alienation

That Paul Michael Glaser of Startsky & Hutch fame directed Kazaam, that awful genie movie starring Shaquille O'Neal. I got that tidbit from my night at the local Buffalo Wild Wings while I played their Buzztime trivia game.

Also, I was surprised that Stacey Nelkin, best known to me as the lead lady in Halloween III, had a teenage relationship with Woody Allen and was the inspiration for the Tracy role in Woody's Manhattan. Not that I'm surprised that Allen would bed a teen when he was in his 40's, but that someone I'd seen act in a movie before was the inspiration for a big role in one of his classic movies.
Movie stuff I just had rushing back from repressed memories: I saw Kazaam. In the theatre.

Is it worse than BAND OF THE HAND and THE RUNNING MAN?

Brian May of Queen is not the same Brian May who scored the first two Mad Max films. I probably assumed it was because of those full page ads in Starlog and Fangoria selling soundtrack LPs showing these albums next to Rick Wakeman of Yes' score for The Burning.
That shatters my whole worldview. It seemed to make so much sense, Queen's Brian May is a smart, talented guy and his compositions often have an orchestral quality, and of course Queen did the FLASH GORDON soundtrack, so I just figured he knew someone in the Australian film industry and got involved in doing scores (because that Brian May, in addition to the MAD MAX films, did a bunch of the other late 70s/early 80s ozploitation flicks). This thread is entertaining AND educational.
I thought that for years! You can imagine how sock knock-offing that was to a 12 year old. But, as Dan says, it wasn't for lack of being believable.

I had my heart broken on that when I did a little research on Road Games (also scored by Brian May) some years back, reaffirmed by Richard Franklin on the DVD commentary for that film.

Jon Gries is Tom Gries' son (never gave it any thought before) and at the age of 11 was cast in his father's Will Penny. Didn't pay much attention to the credits, it was Jon's teeth that gave him away.

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I ran across it on another board.

I never noticed it before.

Some ignorant and idiotic stuff from A-Team i realized while watching it recently:

If you wanna show Frankfurt trainstation and insert an overview stock-picture, don´t use one that features the dome in Cologne! That´s like showing the Statue of liberty when referring to Oklahoma.

I have seldomly seen German boarder patrol that does speak Norwegian (Or Swedish?) instead of German.

And it should not be too hard not to mix up Frankfurt an der Oder and Frankfurt am Main in pictures and references.

Long story short: I hereby apply as location scout manager.

I always thought that was an amazing detail. Further proof of just how airtight the BTTF script was and is.
I'm not getting the BTTF picture. It's been a while since I saw the film. What does the picture show?

Twin pines mall (present) - one pine run over by Marty in the past - Lone pine mall (in the "new" present)

Cause and effect.

The main orchestral theme from ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES appears to have been used as the main theme of HBO's FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON MINI SERIES (if I am not mistaken, otherwise they sound nearly identical )

Edit: not to brag, just wanted to pat myself on the back - I noticed the Lone Pines Mall thing the first time I saw BTTF when I was like 6 or so
post #2477 of 3690
I WILL brag. Kate and I were smart kids! Lone Pine Malls was evident the millions of times I watched the BttF VHS as a kid!

Also, the Earth to Moon theme does sound kinda similar to that of Robin Hood, but not close enough. Though you must be aware that Michael Kamen composed both of those? His Robin Hood theme gets lots of play on the previews for Disney DVDs though.

Ed Masry from Erin Brockovich was Daddy Warbucks in Annie. Introduced my boys to Annie since it is on Netflix Watch Instantly and realized this.

Ed Masry just seemed so short and fat and I remember Daddy Warbucks being taller. Odd.

OK I was bragging as well but trying to look modest about it. I wanted to make sure my accomplishments went down in the official CHUD log book

Actually, I think perhaps I was also just kind of mildly surprised that most people were not already aware of the singular conifer shopping center thing. Not saying people were not looking closely for having missed it, but it's kind of telegraphed in the film with multiple lines of dialog and cut away shots (not to mention the camera lingering on the sign several times!)

The portion that plays over the RH:POT DVD menu sounds the most like FTETTM. I think he was heavily "borrowing" from his previous work when he turned in the score for HBO. I'd never noticed it before, but in that context most of the FTETTM motifs are just variations on existing film music.

EDIT: And I immediately suspected it might be the same composer (because otherwise the original guy would have cried fowl for intellectual property theft) , but we've been set upon by a ghastly chill in Western Mass and I was posting from refuge under an electric warming pad using my iPod. IMDB takes forever to load on that thing, and I figured that whether or not it was the same guy, I was still going to post about the similarities and if it was him, someone else (thanks, McNooj!) would point that out

Tracheal fornication aside, I'm also sorta stunned someone wouldn't recognize Finney from a lifetime of work.

Back in the early 90s, I worked at the Hitchcock show at Universal with someone who went on to be Jodie Foster's stunt double in pretty much every film she made from Sommersby onward.

I'm a fan of a lot of his work but just never put those two together. It had been quite awhile since I saw Annie.

Michelle Monaghan seemed to have quite a substantive role in Constantine. She is featured in many deleted scenes as "Elli"(?), yet in the movie she has been cut down to basically a blink and miss cameo.

Has her character been an essential part of the comics that fell victim to the streamlining of the script or something?

In The Thing from Another World, the idea that the thing is a walking vegetable is totally an homage to the vegetable/animal hybrid Elder Ones of At the Mountains of Madness. Maybe the first Lovecraft reference in film.

Franco Nero is the lead in Enter The Ninja. Which means I'm so old I saw a movie that STARRED Franco Nero in theaters. Mind blown.

Another Movie Thing I Just Realized: Menahem Golan is a shit director.

In Talladega Nights, John C. Reilly's Playgirl alter-ego was named Mike Honcho. This could be a pun on "My Kancho." Who knew Adam McKay and the gang were fans of Japanese perversion? Okay, that seems pretty obvious now that I actually think about it.

This is rather something I forgot but just remembered through a re-watch, but the "verbal morality" ticket machine sound gets played A LOT through "Demolition Man".
Movie remains fun a shell though.

The guy who plays "Chip" Shreck (Andrew Bryniarski) in Batman Returns has to do a fucking Christopher Walken impression for his role.

As a kid this shit obviously was over my head. But last night I was playing with the new PS3 Netflix app and threw Batman Returns on to see how an older HD film would look. And I just lost it when "Chip" comes in talking like Walken.

Melora Hardin (Jan from "The Office") was originally cast as Jennifer in Back to the Future. When the filmmakers booted Eric Stoltz, they also replaced Hardin with Claudia Wells.

And he's also Zangief from "Street Fighter" and the newest Leatherface! What an eclectic filmography.

Wasn't he Butterfinger in Hudson Hawk too?
