The Unsmart Will Go On.

I had to inform a co-worker of mine that Georges Melies from Hugo was a real person. I guess that's slightly more excusable.

I just discovered that this movie exists:

It's The Road Warrior  meets Escape From New York and it was made several years before either!

That's not a pumpkin, it's a visual echo of his knife.

I'm evidently slow on the uptake, some times.

I'm not sure I actually just "realized" this or what...

I watched my Blu of Last Boy Scout recently, the first time I'd seen the film in some time.

And I thought I had a very clear recollection that, in addition to playing over the end credits, Pat Boone's "Endless Sleep" is on the car radio during the first scene when the kids throw the squirrel in the car window.

Was that ever the case, either in the theatrical or previous home video versions?

I never put one second on thought into who played "Mongo" in Blazing Saddles, but I sure as hell never realised it was Alex Karras, the dad from Webster.

Oddly I only find out because Karras is sueing the NFL.

Dont ask how, but i just found out that Stephen Sommers added digital pants to the final scene of "Van Helsing" because Hugh Jackman's butt seemed to nullify what was supposed to be a tragic, touching scene.

Now, not to be sexist or anything, but i assume that this is the female equivalent of Michael Bay not letting ScarJo go topless in "The Island"

How am I just finding out Keith Carradine is Martha Plimpton's father?  Did everyone else know that?

Simon Wells, of being the great-grandson of H.G. Wells and directing The Time Machine fame, was a "Future Consultant" on Back to the Future Part II.  Also, he apparently directed We're Back: A Dinosaur's StoryAn American Tale: Fievel Goes West, The Prince of Egypt, and Mars Needs Moms.

I thought it was George Plimpton.

Great recent interview over on AV Club, here: http://www.avclub.com/articles/martha-plimpton,71719/

It doesn't sound like they have much of a relationship. I could be wrong.

Rewatched "The Big Lebowski" after having not seen it in years. As I already knew, the Dude is given to regurgitating things other people say throughout the film. But one thing I never noticed before was that when he says, "This aggression will not stand, man," during his first meeting with the Big Lebowski, he's actually quoting George Bush in press conference from a previous scene.

I just realized Mars Needs Moms bombed not cuz it had 'Mars' in the title but because it was directed by Simon Wells.

Actually, the story is that producer Robert Zemeckis consistently overruled Wells' decisions throughout the making of Moms.

I just realized that Leo DiCaprio is slowly turning into Joe Don Baker!

There are worse fates.  At least he's not turning into Fred Dalton Thompson.

Underground comix cartoonist Justin Green is apparently William Friedkin's cousin.

Which will mean nothing to anyone except serious comix nerds. But hey. I just realized it.

The man whose name I thought was Benedict Cumberpatch for upwards of a year is actually Benedict Cumberbatch. Goddamn that excessively British man and his name. Wonderful actor, though.

Also, Jack White's been doing press for his new solo album and I couldn't help but notice that he bears a striking resemblance to a young Michael Keaton. Twitchy mannerisms, vocal inflections, and all.

Hahaha.  Cumberpatch.  That would be such an odd name!

I can't say that I did, or if I did it was years ago and I forgot about it.

Looking around, I also discovered that the son of John Williams also happens to be a musician (Joseph; he was the lead singer of Toto back in the late 80's), that Marc and Lori Singer are cousins to Bryan, Casper Van Dien is the great-great-great nephew of Mark Twain, Mary Martin (who I remember played Peter Pan on TV WAY back when) is the mom of Larry Hagman, and probably embarrassing to me, Jason Miller (Father Karras himself) is the father of Jason Patric; Patric's grandfather is Jackie Gleason.

Just read a story about Dennis Quad's divorce situation, and lo and behold, it turns out that he was married to PJ Soles in the late 70s/early 80s.  Weird.

I revisited the first eight "Friday the 13th" movies recently and it occurred to me that the creepy, horndog coroner Axel in "The Final Chapter" also played Officer Fackler in the "Police Academy" saga.

Yep, that'd be Bruce Mahler, also of the late, lamented Fridays.

I'm watching the Ocean's trilogy right now & just realized how much cooler it would've been had Idris Elba been cast in Don Cheadle's role.

Insanely fucking cool. That's how much.

I've known this for a while, but I'm ashamed to say that it took me quite a while before I realized that the kid in the suit in Henry's flashback as a kid is Joe Pesci's character in Goodfellas.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

ps. I accidentally inserted this spoiler box and didn't know how to edit it out.

The trailer for Brave finally made me realize something.  I will always believe that Pixar make good-natured, finely crafted stories that appeal to adults as well as kids, and that the least of these films have heart and brains to put most adventure stories to shame.  I will believe this because everyone I know with a smidge of cinematic taste agrees it is so, and DESPITE the fact that I will never, ever stop finding their animation style hideously, oppressively ugly

I have the same thing, but for Iron Man 2.

But now Elba's in Thor, so I guess that's off the table forever.

Pee Wee Herman is the Penguins dad in Batman Returns

Had you just never watched Batman Returns before?

Watched it. Didn't recognize Ruebens. Guess I need more current epiphanies.

No it's not that.  I am just surprised anyone who's watched that movie (assuming you knew Pee-Wee going in) wouldn't have recognized him the first time you saw it.  That's all.  No big deal, I just remember him not being particularly disguised, or anything.

Neither "Funny Games" nor "Funny People" is very funny.

In DIE HARD when John meets Ellis, Takagi and Holly, they yap about how Holly is very good in her profession and how the company gave her an expensive gold watch. The same watch that John breaks in the end to save Holly and drop Hans from the window. There's a conservative metaphor buried somewhere in there.

It's true.

1) The money that companies spends on pensions and watches would be much better spent on severance packages for CEO's. Specifically if the company is Planet Hollywood.

You all probably knew this, but I didn't make the connection until recently: Agent Coulson wrote What Lies Beneath and adapted/directed Choke.

Mind: blown.

I knew about Choke, but had no idea about What Lies Beneath.  Weird.

Aunt Bethany from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was Betty Boop and Olive Oyl. (And that was her doing the voice for Betty Boop in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? too. Half a century later.)

DRIVER WAS DIRETCTED BY THE GUY WHO DID PUSHER AND PUSHER 2: WITH BLOOD ON MY HANDS (fuck Pusher 3, I understand contractual obligations, but I don't have to like them)!!!

I skipped BRONSON. I was skeptical of the hype around DRIVER. Then I watched it on Netflix and was like, 'holy shit' that was like if Nicholas Roeg did a Jim Thompson story, only with really nice cameras and shit.

But DUDE~! Maybe my mind didn't proscess the word REFN as a thing or something but, yeah. Way to bust out of director jail for that Torturro thing.

Whooo.

Until Ambler mentioned it in I think the Django thread, I hadn't known Kurt Russell ghost-directed Tombstone. Nor did anyone else not on the set, apparently, until after Cosmatos died, Russell having waited till then to talk about it, true to his word to Cosmatos.

Bill Duke has a long and varied directing career that includes Sister Act 2.

That is a favorite film of mine, and I've always thought it was odd that Russell never went into directing after showing such promise on Tombstone. Did his vow of silence cost him a possible career as a director?
