This isn't quite the right thread for this, but this has bugged me for years:

"The rain on my chest is a baptism." - Batman, The Dark Knight Returns, 1986

"The rain on my car is like a baptism." - Lloyd Dobler, Say Anything, 1989

Question I always had is, did Cameron Crowe consciously hat-tip Frank Miller (via Lloyd, the kind of kid who might've read Dark Knight Returns), or did they both reference some earlier "rain on [something] is like a baptism" quote, or did they both just arrive at the "rain/baptism" thing independently?

It's not a particularly novel connection to make.  Baptism isn't anything but cleansing water symbolism.

Right, but "rain on my chest/rain on my car" are similar enough that maybe the latter was intended as...Ah, skip it.

Two MST3K related entries:

The Alpha horrible teenager in Zombie Nightmare grew up to be Hollywood pablum-powerhouse, Shawn Levy.

That's Deep Roy behind several layers of fake eyelashes in Alien from LA. He was also the Tin Man in Return to Oz, and Droopy McKool in Return of the Jedi.

In The Lost World: Jurrasic Park, the characters of Nick Van Owen, and Roland Tembo were named after the characters in Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.

"Super Mario Bros: The Movie" is practically unwatchable.

It paid for Bob Hoskins's kitchen. According to him, it was worth it.

Mother of God, it has a fansite: www.smbmovie.com.

I'm pretty sure that SMB has achieved cult status ala Troll 2 and Rocky Horror.

Dean Norris, Hank from Breaking Bad, is the commanding officer of the Mobile Infantry in Starship Troopers.

He also plays Tony in Total Recall.

Norris is definitely one of "those guys" from the late 80s and most of the 90s.

He was also one of the miscellaneous soon-to-be-whacked peripheral cops in Lethal Weapon 2, along with Jeanette Goldstein.

Am watching The Dark Knight while I do some work, and only just twigged that the Son of the Batman who Joker murders on camera and hangs outside the DA's office is Hockey Pads Guy from Batman's introductory scene with Scarecrow. This has always eluded me, despite the guy most definitely wearing hockey pads in both sequences. And Batman pointing out his distinctive hockeypadness. I can be thick sometimes.

He's also the lead SWAT guy who discovers Miles Dyson is going to blow the building in Terminator 2.

Dean Norris is also in the Lawnmower Man.

One of the cool peripheral things the ARG/viral campaign for TDK did was actually build this guy up. I'd have to search to find them, but there were forums as part of the campaign, forums on a pro-Batman site run by Gotham's "citizens." Hockey Pads Guy was a regular contributor there (obviously someone from the marketing team using the character's name), but it lent what happened to him a bit more tragedy and weight for the folks who "knew" him.

Well, I've known for years that the movie was pretty terrible and a real mess and the film was just chaotic on screen, but I had no idea it has become a cult favorite in some circles. That site was a big surprise to me; knowing that almost 200 people showed up for a theatrical screening of the movie *this past weekend* was quite the shock.

After watching Badlands on TCM last night, I realised Natural Born Killers is absolute garbage.

I watched The Thin Red Line for the first time since probably 1999 and I just realized that Hans Zimmer basically cribbed his main theme from Inception from his main theme from TTRL.

In Jacobs Ladder, the party scene, where Jessie is dancing with, well, the fucking Alien, I always thought that the thing that came out of her mouth was some horrific kind of mutation a la The Thing or something.

I've only just realised it's the thing she's grinding her ass against's phallus.

fuck

still the best depiction of a freak out IMO

The guy who plays Jorah Marmont, Dany's protector in Game of Thrones, was the main villain in Lara Croft Tomb Raider, which has the distinction of having some of the worst practical and digitall effects for a big budget summer movie I've ever seen

For the final nail in the NBK coffin, check out Man Bites Dog. I'm surprised the makers didn't sue Tarantino/Stone into the, um... stone age.

Predator was my go to comfort movie for several years. Took me forever to realize that the Predator was copying Billy's laugh at the end.

okay, didn't 'just' realize this, but it's a good one. The Viloent Femmes had a song called " Out The Window", a lighthearted ditty about suicide. It has the lyric "all his life he said 'yes' until one day he said 'no'", which is a quote from and reverence to a scene in Woody Allen's movie Hannah and Her Sisters.

AVATAR was on the tube a few days ago and I realised why it became the biggest film ever: it's a 3D film about flying dreams.

Cameron's a calculative and cold motherfucker so he opens the film with a sweeping aerial shot (with voice over saying "I have these dreams about flying - SUBTLE), continues with a scene of people floating in zero gravity and then shows how those people descent through the clouds. Then you have all this silly stuff about a marine falling in love with a cat, but Cameron throws some aerial scenes in there to keep you interested. And the film ends with a long 3D aerial battle.

If you ask people what they like, I bet dreaming of flying is pretty high on the list, possibly somewhere between sex and kittens. <- I typed that without realising just how calculative and evil Cameron can be. So, Avatar is all the three things everyone likes combined. IN 3D! The sequel will probably add marihuana, Johnny Depp and bouncy castles.

Ernie Hudson played the guy who gets handcuffed to John Candy in Going Berserk (which is not a great movie, but it's got at least one absolute bust-a-gut funny sequence - not coincidentally, the Hudson/Candy adventures).

Just saw a clip from Being John Malkovich on YouTube, and I was a little taken aback to find out that David Fincher plays a small part in the film, as Los Angeles editor Christopher Bing near the end of the film. I had seen the film a few years back, but apparently was not watching close enough.

Edit: Wow, apparently it's "spot the director day" for me, as Spike Jonze plays an EMT at the end of The Game. Pretty cool instance of cameo swapping.

CSI's Detective Brass is at the Playboy mansion in Beverly Hills Cop 2. He's in the scene where Axel is talking to Hefner. He also has a blonde bowl-cut.

Watched Chronicle last night and checked out its IMDB page; lo and behold, the class president character is played by Wallace from The Wire!

So, I guess that is where the fuck Wallace was at.

I was there! Wasn't sure what kind of crowd to expect for a 19th(wtf) anniversary showing of Super Mario Brothers, but it was decent enough and everyone seemed to enjoy it for what it was.

To stay on topic, I never realized the entryway to the office I used to work in was used in the scene where Daisy first meets the Marios. And that Lance Henriksen played the King, though he only had one line and was on screen for like 3 seconds.

I am 99.99% certain that the picture of him at the funeral is actually a publicity still of him from The Wire.

He was also the QB for the last 3? seasons of Friday Night Lights, so Wallace was the fuck there first before getting super powers.

Motherfucking Tom Hardy is in Black Hawk Down as Twombly, the second half of the bumbling machine gunners.  Shit, every fuck one is in that movie.

Yeah, chopper pilots include Ari Gold and Tig (from Sons of Anarchy).

Between BHD and Band of Brothers, I think we have two "Six Steps of (insert actor here)" nexus points.

John Glover, who voiced The Riddler on Batman TAS, is in Batman and Robin. Even stranger for some reason he's playing Jason Woodrue, aka The Floronic Man. The bad guy from Alan Moore's first arc in Swamp Thing.

Michael Papajohn, who plays Ben's (near) killer in Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, is in The Amazing Spider-Man.

I think he's been typecast as a villain since the '80s. If I had to guess what role inspired his casting on "Batman: The Animated Series", I'd go with Daniel Clamp in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch".

He played a villain in "Smallville", "Animaniacs", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", and I believe "Scrooged" as well. He also has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo as a pretentious douchebag actor in "Annie Hall". He does make a magnificent douchebag. I mean that as a compliment. I love him as The Riddler.

Of Spider-Man 3's many, many missteps, the retconning of Uncle Ben's death remains the one that rubs me the worst way. The first two films dealt with it, and did so wonderfully, organically, and there was closure for the viewers and the characters. Shoehorning in Sandman as Ben's "real" killer was soap opera bullshit and horribly lazy writing.

Just watched Blade Runner (final cut) on blu for the first time, and I don't know if this is an addition for this version, or something I just never noticed before, or have forgotten over time, but I've only now caught the fact that the replicants have weird lights shining in their eyes...

Amazing blu too, movie looks like it was made yesterday.
