The Mist

Don't know if this is old news but I just read in Fango that Frank Darabont is on the project and I think it'll be great if it's true. He brought us two of the best Stephen King adaptations in The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. The Mist is one of my favorite stories of all time so I hope to hell they do it justice.

I live in Hollywood and saw him at the grocery store the other day. He's got a hot wife.

I love The Mist, but I keep getting the feeling that Darabont is too glossy a director to really do this justice. This film screams for an "Evil Dead"-era Sam Raimi or early John Carpenter touch.

I couldn't agree more sadly there's noone around like that anymore.

can you imagine if John Carpenter directed this one. that would be incredible. really it wouldn't get any better than that. maybe he can do the re-make one day

at least Mick Garris isnt doin it. although his King adaptations have a swarthy TV charm (recent Riding The Bullet featured many fanboy King refs and the Grim Reaper smoking a jay). and ron perlman looks great in photos from his Desperation movie-in-progress

I would be happy as hell to hear Carpenter was directing the next Harry Potter flick. Where the hell is he dammit? The Mist is perfect JC material.

He goes shopping with his wife? How sweet.

I really wonder why The Mist hasn't been adapted so far. It's a very visual, cinematic short story - and one of King's best. I agree with Ratty though, Darabont's not the perfect choice; the story requires someone who could make it raw and disturbing.

From what I have read, Darabont is really stepping away from his previous films with the way he wants to direct this. He said he wanted to go for a gritty indie horror feel with it (no matter how big the budget is) and that he wanted to use almost nothing but PRACTICAL special effects. Little to no CGI. THAT is what really makes me happy. The Mist is his dream project and it is finally going to happen. He is currently writing it, and outside of participating in the Masters of Horror anthology and producing the TV minseries sequel to Carpenter's Thing, it will be his next film. I honestly can't wait to see what the critics reaction will be to this. A pure horror film from the mind that brough us The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Majestic. They'll either praise it or ignore it. A lot of people fail to recognize that the Shawshank Redemption (as well as Stand By Me) was written by Stephen King.

That sounds great Bob. Where'd you hear that? IMO, Darabont is the perfect choice as he has done the best work with King adaptations. In the hands of someone else, besides the aforementioned Carpenter of course, I'd be worried about it. Darabont has proven himself and actually cares about the source material. Anyone else would try and put their own touch on it and fuck it up most likely.

I kind of like that idea.

And as far as where I read it online, I can't really remember exactly. I wish I could. All I know is that it was an interview with Darabont that discussed both The Mist, as well as his involvement in the Thing sequel miniseries.

Darabont's had the rights to "The Mist" since before Shawshank wrapped, if I remember right. If not earlier.

Which has made it very frustrating for fans of that particular short story.

I'd actually given up on his making it, and had written a screenplay that incorporated some elements from it, among other inspirations, figuring that since Darabont wasn't going to get "The Mist" out there, at least stuff that FELT like "The Mist" should be seen.

Of course, fat lot of good that does, since no one in Hollywood knows who the fuck I am, I don't have an agent and don't know anyone locally who would put this project together around my screenplay anyway.

So thank God Darabont seems to be finally moving on this thing

My 'MIST' Trailer....;)

Greetings All!
New to these boards, interesting stuff afoot!

Wanted to let those parties that may be interested know I have compilled a 'trailer' for a movie version of 'The Mist'...

Keep in mind, its pretty 'homemade', I dont have access to a lot of (or any!) fancy movie creation utilities, but by implimenting an animation program and some primitive sound editing, I was able to put together a 46 second 'wish list' trailer for this kick ass Stephen King tale...to perhaps tide us over until the real film by Darabont is in theaters...

You can download the clip in Real Media format in my Dream Theater (along with my take on 'Desperation', before they announced a miniseries version, out soon)...

DREAM THEATER link

Hope you enjoy it...let me know what ya think...

Thanks!

Anyone think they should combine 'The Mist' with 'Evil Dead 4'?

As the mist comes rolling in the only secure place to hold up is a certain supermarket called 'S-Mart'...with a certain guy who works there?

No...probably not...(j/k, folks!)

Like to watch this and some of your other trailers; do I need some special CODEC?
Can't get the buggers to play!

I got your fake-Mist trailer to work, that's pretty neat! Your CGI is on par with most SCI-FI channel films. I love this kind of stuff because it implies that it won't be long before more and more young artists are able to make their own movies altogether outside of the hollywood system.

Most of the clips are in Real Media format (RM produces the best sound/pic in conversion from AVI...BIG FILES...to smaller files, Ive found...pluse, the converter doesnt get picky regarding my screen sizes, and I do all my clips in 'widescreen' size, which the Windows Media Encoder (WMV) doesnt care for...

You can bet a FREE RM Player at...

Thanks, glad you liked it...I hate NOT having access to better movie making software (too poor, as a net cartoonist and animator!) as I can SEE really cool stuff in my head (camera swoops, zoom ins, etc) and its tough to get the animation program I use (its meant to export screensavers, but it also makes animated film clips in AVI format...'Animated Screen' by Pysoft, www.pysoft.com) to produce that level of scene...

Thanks, tho...glad ya liked it!
If you happen to download the OTHER King 'adaption' I did, 'Desperation', let me know what you think of that (again, a LOT of it is 'animated scenes', such as Collie E's cop car screeching away w/ lights flashing, and it tends to look 'cartoony'...but I dont have access to a REAL 'cop car' so I made the best I could do with what I had...
