Superman: The Animated Series Vol. I

Did anyone else get this? I've seen a lot of discussion of the Batman set over in the appropriate thread, but very little mention of Superman.

I've been working my way through the episodes and I think they're great. Better than I remembered actually. I keep wondering if Bryan Singer has seen them. I hope he has, man. This show is a blueprint for how to do almost every aspect of the Superman mythos the right way.

The only thing missing is the John Williams theme. That said, Shirley Walker did a nice job coming up with a decent replacement.

I picked this up, but I haven't watched it yet. I'm so behind on my DVDs. I haven't gotten to my "Batman: The Animated Series - Volume 2," either.

The theme for the show comes close to being as good as John Williams' main title.

I was never a huge Superman fan, but I love this show. I'm not starting in on it until I finish BTAS vol.2, though.

Best representation of Superman since the first two Donner flicks. Luthor is such a calculating fuck in this series thanks to Clancy Brown.

Dana Delaney, best Lois---ever!

Ditto on Singer. Although, since his flick is suppose to be a sequel of sorts to the firs two originals, I doubt there will be a problem.

The only episode I can recall of this right now is the early in the season Toyman one. That was good. Superman versus a giant rubber ducky.

I agree with the arguement that depowering Superman back to his earliest incarnation allows for some more dramatic peril. It would take a monumentally talented to writer to come up with consistantly good stories about the near-omniscient Silver Age Superman.

The only superman episodes that I really loved were the Darkseid eps, and the episode with Steel where Metallo zaps supes with his kryptonite battery and rampages through Harlem trying to finish him off, and Steel has to protect him.

I love that ep because it has one of the most memorable pieces of animation for me at least, right as metallo is about to finish off supes who is laying on a table underneath lamps to heal him, steel goes "hey metallo, catch" and he tosses his hammer right into the chest compartment with the kryptonite and it goes into slo mo as he gets blasted through the wall and falls a few stories onto the ground.

That was bad ass.

Throw me in with the crowd that likes how Supes can get at least staggered back in this series. One needs only watch the first season of Smallville to see how finding innovative ways to sic the Kryptonite on Supes can only lead to trouble.

Also, watching the set a few days ago reminded me to gopick up World's Finest at some point. Not for the whole Clark Kent/Bruce Wayne crossover thing and whatnot....but for the Mercy/Harley fight. Comedic greatness that was.

WORLD'S FINEST owns, period. The Batman/Superman banter in that film is greatness.

'You peeked.'

I sold my WORLD'S FINEST disc when they started putting these shows out in season sets. That was three episodes of Batman and Superman, right? I really hope I don't have to re-buy the fucking thing.

Also, you are all correct about how good it is. When they announced the Wolfgang Petersen SUPERMAN VS. BATMAN project, my one hope was that someone would slip him a copy of that DVD before they locked in a script. Everything about it works perfectly.

I'm saving up some DVD money so that I can buy this, Batman Vol. 2, and Curb Your Enthusiasm vol. 3.

I loved this show so much. Didn't get Supes get a bit more powerful as the series went on? Anyway, my favorite episodes are:

1) The one where some mobster guy is trying to off Clark Kent for a piece of journalism that he did. He finds that he just can't do it. At the end of the episode, when he's in the gas chamber, he realizes that Clark's Superman. I really can't do this episode justice with words.

2) The crossover with Batman where Bruce Wayne gets kidnapped by Braniac, so Supes has to dress as Batman in order to find out what happened to him. There's this great scene where Superman, dressed as Batman, takes on a whole group of Batman villains (Penguin, Bane, and Mad Hatter are among them). There's this great part where Bane punches him, and he only staggers back a little bit, and Supes goes in for the KO. It's hilarious and I love it.

Some of the parasite episodes were really good, as well.

I have this set, and I tore through it the same week I bought it. Best adaptation of the comic, period. Can't wait for Vol. 2.

It really ramps up in the later episodes, once Darkseid starts making himself known. And Ed Asner as Granny Goodness is the greatest casting in the history of mankind.

I couldn't find any subsequent threads for the later Superman volumes so I figure I'll give this a bump. I am finishing off Volume Three right now. The show definitely got better as the series went on.

I have an unbelievable amount of love for Apokolips...Now! The last stand in Metropolis followed by the death of Dan Turpin was amazing to my young eyes at the time.

The Late Mr. Kent is the episode Futekina was referring to, and it had a nice pulpy feel to it as Clark narrated. Nothing like showing the gas chamber in action not once, but twice, in a Saturday morning cartoon.

Some of the animation really is top-notch, even if it is lacking the moody shadows of Batman. If only Singer's film could have been half as exciting as the cartoon...

I was surprised that they never had it revealed that Dan Turpin was transported to Apokolips. It could have made for a cool New Gods episode of JLU. Turpin could have been living on Apokolips for years, and been leading a revolution or something.
I always figured that Turpin got incinerated by Darkseid's Omega Effect. If anything, having Darkseid killing Turpin out of spite showed how much of a prick Darkseid is. It made his eventual pounding by Superman towrads the end of the series that much sweeter.

I was surprised that it never panned out that way, considering the episode ended with "...Not the End" For emotional reasons, I'm glad he stayed dead. For story reasons, I agree with you.

Well Darkseid's Omega Beams can transport things, destroy things, and bring those things back. So, they could have brought Dan Turpin back in the end. Superman could have forced him to.

Yeah, he pulled that shit with his son, Kalibak. All of a sudden he's there by Darkseid's side after apparently being incinerated in volume 2.

Well like I said they can also be used to transport things. I'm sure he just transported his son back to Apokolips to be tortured for a while.

I'm watching the Green Lantern episode right now. I'm not too keen on them introducing Kyle Rayner before Hal Jordan. I'm sure everything will be right as rain when The New Frontier hits DVD. Hal Jordan in all of his glory.

Edit to add: Just saw the Col. Hal Jordan reference on the plane at the airfield.

Hal also shows up in a Justice League episode. Don't remember if he had any lines or if it just showed him with out Lanterns, but he was in it.

I haven't seen any of these in years but I remember that one being pretty fun. It also inspired my go-to lament as a graphic designer/commercial artist whenever anyone tells me they like my work:

"Meanwhile, I'm drawing soap."

Too true, Green Lantern. Too true.
I think that's why I'm not a fan of Kyle Rayner. I'm stuck drawing soap, but I don't get to go save the world. Bastard.
