New Flash Gordon:SE DVD on the horizon...

According to TheDigitalBits.com:

Quote:
Our industry sources have informed us that Universal is currently working on a Flash Gordon: Special Edition for release on DVD later this year, in honor of the film's 25th anniversary. This would certainly make sense given that the studio has just announced the release of the long-awaited Dune: Extended Edition. We've certainly been dying for a better edition of Flash on DVD here at The Bits for quite a while now (the title was previously released in the U.S. as a non-anamorphic, movie-only DVD from Image Entertainment, but that edition is now out of print).
Considering I never bought the original release because it was barebones, this would make my decision a good one. And Jesus, talk about feeling old...I still remember when I went to the theater (3 times) to see this. And that 25 years ago? Ugh. I feel ancient.

And what about that Flash Gordon cartoon that used to be on Saturday mornings? I actually liked that one. I wonder if that will ever appear on DVD.

They also mentioned that DreamWorks is working on a double-dip of "Gladiator". Why? Wasn't this DVD packed in the first place? This was the first DVD I bought sight-unseen because I had heard how good the movie was (and I wasn't disappointed).

If you're talking about the one Filmmation did, I'm with you -- that thing kicked all kinds of ass. Only problem was it was on so late in the morning (usually 11:30) that it was always getting pre-empted for college football and such, but man did that thing have the serial feel down cold.

Ah man, I hope this the real deal and not wishfull bullshit. I would love to own a special edition of this wonderful, goofy movie.

Flash Gordon on DVD? I'm already there.

I so fucking want this to be true.

Love!

This is one of those films that I hated in my youth for some reason. I guess having seen "Empire" only a month before, this paled in comparison.

Father time certainly has been kind to it. I challenge anyone to find a movie that is more fun that this.

The filmation cartoon is tons of fun. Some great style going on there. Why Boomarang or Toon network hasn't picked this up is a mystery. For that matter, where the hell is "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle!"

I have a VHS of the filmation Flash and it looks and feels almost identical to the glorious Delarentis movie.

Let's hope we get a commentary track from Sam Jones and Timothy Dalton. If not that, at least new interviews.

I'm sure most of the cast would jump at the chance to do some kind of contribution. Hell, I can't even remember the last time I saw Sam Jones or Melody Anderson in anything. I'd especially like to hear from Brian Blessed and Max Von Sydow. Let me also agree with others here about the need for Filmation to put both their Flash Gordon and Tarzan cartoons out on DVD. The sooner the better.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Emperor's New Groove
Clue
The Incredibles
Moulin Rouge!
The Fifth Element
Big Trouble in Little China
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension!
Hudson Hawk
The Princess Bride
Ocean's 11

I never cared for the live action Flash Gordon, but the Filmation cartoon might be worth a look.

Flash Gordon has been raped repeatedly by Father Time. It's a fun movie and I'll always have a soft spot for it, but to to say it's aged well is absurd.

Flash! Aaaaahhhhhhhh!

I keep coming into this thread wanting to say "Beedybeedybeedy" but then I remember that was Buck Rogers.
Post better, Werbal.

Buck Rogers doesn't have shit on Flash Gordon.

Nope. Jones and producer Dino Delarentis had a disagreement about something. When it was time for Jones to come in and loop his lines, he told Dino to shove it. So, Dino retaliated by having his voice dubbed.

So, at Megacon yesterday, both Sam Jones and Melody Anderson were there, signing autographs and taking pictures. The movie might have held up over time, but these two sure haven't. Painful...but the worst was Gil Gerard. Wow.

Sorry, no pics. I was too busy staring at all of the "stars" and how they're now whoring themselves out for $5 a pop. Time was only kind to one person there...Lou Ferrigno.

Anyways, back on topic...can't wait to pick this DVD up when it's released!

Yeah, I've heard stories about Gil living a pretty hard and reckless life and every bit of it showing on his face.

And his belly. I saw him at Dragon*Con last year and didn't believe it was really him until I heard him speak. Yikes. Erin Gray, however, was still quite loverly.

I saw that Sam Jones had a tough life AF (After Flash) when I saw him in one of those "erotic thrillers" with Shannon Tweed. He looked veeeerrrry old in it.

I am all over this...

The Legend of The Lone Ranger
Black Hole
Popeye
Superman 2
Flash Gordon
Petes Dragon
Kitty from Outerspace

That was like my BETA player rotation for years growing up and I will own them ALL soon.

I thought the same thing about Sam Jones. And then I went to IMDB.

He's in DTV hell with Joe Estevez (the go-to Estevez if Emilio isn't available) and Shannon Tweed.
(Most recent work: "Redemption" starring Don "the dragon" Wilson and Cynthia Rothrock.)

It's no wonder we haven't seen him lately. A better question is: Would we want to?

I saw Gerard last summer. Yipe! FAT! 300 pounds easy. He was with Erin Gray who still looked good, all things considered. How did Anderson look?

Where the hell is the Lone Ranger? Has never been released to DVD. I loved it as a kid, had an awesome teaser poster, but have you seen the film recently? I fear it sucks ass.

I own the rest except for "Pete's Dragon" & "Kitty from Outerspace."

Anderson looked OK. She's taken care of her body, though it looks like she's done a little hard livin'.

Damn, the cartoon movie is way higher quality than the tv show. (I just found the 14 episode set at Target for 5 bucks...but the first season is 16 episodes. Thanks guys.)

As a kid, I was always captivated by this particular glittery look in Filmation's cartoons:

Now thanks to the commentary track on the Flash Gordon cartoon, I know what the deal is there:

Quote:
Filmation also pioneered other animation technologies, particularly in Flash Gordon, which included backlighting effects for the first time in American animation (they were already in use in Japan), including moire effects to represent energy fields

Oh, and if Lou Scheimer is to be believed, this film was made once Filmation realized they couldn't afford to produce a live-action tv movie of Flash Gordon, and sold the live-action rights to Dino De Laurentiis in order to fund the animated film.
I wish I could see that movie in some format other than shitty youtube transfer. I keep holding out, but I may have to cave and watch it that way.
The Warsaw shit is pretty cool, but yeah, I stopped watching in the hopes I can land a better copy.

Here's a blog post about the Filmation series:

http://space1970.blogspot.com/2010/01/flash-gordon-1979.html

The last section addresses the TV movie (Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All) that preceded the series, and talks about the difference between the two, and what was re-used and re-purposed from the movie.

I recently DVR'd the 1980 live action film off of HBO in HD, and I've watched it several times since.  I hadn't seen it in many many years, although I loved it as a kid.  I had the soundtrack on vinyl and must have listened to it over a hundred times.  The film holds up very well.  I want to get it on blu-ray now (the recently released blu seems to share the same source as the Savior of the Universe edition DVD).  The blog I linked to above has several other good articles on Flash Gordon, including reviews of the DVD and blu-ray.

Recently learned this is the same technique used on the suits in the original Tron.

I'd like a version of the soundtrack with just the music and no lines from the movie included.

You and me both.  I'd always hoped there'd be a definitive score album released, but to my knowledge, it's never happened.

Yeah, I guess I'd like that, but I like the dialogue included.  I listened to it so many times as a kid that those lines were burned into my brain.  It's probably just nostalgia, though.  As an adult I might prefer just listening to the music.  My old soundtrack is on vinyl and I don't have a turntable now so I haven't listened to it in a while.

On a quasi-similar note, I swear I saw Erin Gray (from Buck Rogers) in a new commercial for Pup-eroni, the dog treats.

Saw her on a recent commercial too. Not positive about the product. Could have been the same one.
