Six Nations shenanigans

I realise that I'm in a minority here in the UK for loving the 'gentleman's game' (blame my antipodean upbringing), but I'm mesmerised by the fact that the table is currently topped by the Welsh and the Irish - and that they're playing good rugby. Yes, France were lucky (twice) and England/Scotland unlucky, but I've been surprised by the competition so far - shit, for one week even Scotland and Italy didn't look that bad...

WTF is going on? And more importantly - what will this mean for the Lions tour?

(mods - I realise this is a sports topic, but no one in the US will understand it so I've placed it here)

The Welsh showed amazing form in the World Cup, they had a young side that had real potential so it's not surprising that they are doing well now. England pretty much peaked in the cup. With retirements and injuries we're having one of the worst six nations in our lives!

I see a Lions team very much dominated by the Welsh this year. Henson is a dead cert I would think. I'm holding my opinions on the Irish until I see them really tested... hopefully in their next match (fingers crossed).

And here I thought this was a thread about the Iroquois.

Your boys certainly have a tough one next - and in Dublin no less. I just dont understand how you lost it against the French. The obvious reason is that you missed kicks, but you had the frogs on the ropes and had scored two good tries... I was picking a 40 point hiding at half-time. Johnny boy would have made a difference in that respect - but you shouldn't have needed him.

I'm hoping the Welsh beat the French - you're right in that they've got a good young team (who played well in the World Cup), but I think they're still a long way off being a consistent challenge to the 'big 5'... Henson will be a tourist - but will they start him ahead of D'Arcy next to O'Driscoll (provided either of those two are fit to travel)?

It's always good when we beat the English, but when it's not only at Twickenham, but also in the exact same way that the English used to beat us in the 90's (no hand game, no flair, just defence and kicks)... then it sure is sweet. I loved it when Robinson complained that the French didn't actually try to really play and didn't deserve to win and were lucky - that's what we always used to say when the Rob Andrew and Will Carling teams beat us. Well, who's laughing now, my roastbeef chums? <diabolical French laugh>

Just kidding - on our form and with the increasing lunacy of Laporte's selections I don't fancy our chances against the Welsh, let alone the Irish, and even if we do win this tournament on adrenaline, things generally do not look good for 2007. We wouldn't have won if Wilkinson was playing, and we're still more than capable of getting a good hiding from NZ or Australia.

Yeah, Laporte's selection is lunatic. Can't believe Michallak (sp?) isn't starting. Funny what you said about you beating us being like a reverse of the Carling era. I was saying exactly the same thing to my Scottish mate and how I knew how he felt when Dean Richards and Rob Andrew would grind victories out against everyone else!

I think Wales will have France as although they won I think they somehow offered even less than England and the only hope we have against the Irish is that we can do an underdog on their grandslam plans as the Celts have done to us so often! Either way this year's quality has been pretty crap.

Go Ireland. Beat England.

Not all Americans are heathens. I have always enjoyed rugby. I amnot always sure I understand what is going on, but I do love the game.

Sucks that I have yet to be able to watch any of the games here. Fox Sports World used to show the major international rugby matches, but they have switched to all football. I have been keeping up through the BBC's website. I would go find a pub to watch the games in, but with the one year old that makes it kind of hard.

By the way, the comic strip Get Fuzzy recently had a reference to the Six Nations matches.

It's great that we're not losing games this year (Though please God, why do we still have that same kicker, just let Henson do it). The only thing that worries me is the French Captain saying that they were'nt really trying against Scotland and England, but they will from now on.

Nice one Pal, they just happen to play Wales next.

I'm not bothered if we win it all though, just to see the team come this far is enough for me.

Yeah, right. That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard.

Let's face it: now that Super League is back, Union has become entirely irrelevant.

Fucking League Troll - have it!

Watching the leaque over here is quite soothing to my mind though... makes me feel like I'm back home as it seems that all the players I watched a couple of years ago now play over here. The London Broncos seem to be suffering from the 'Arsenal' syndrome, not that I'm complaining as I'm a fan of a couple of their imported players.

Good to see that the Irish and the Welsh are favourites this weekend against the Poms and the French (madness). And the French not trying? They must have stopped trying last year after beating the Wallabies as they've looked like rubbish since - and how can you not try against the English - everyone hates them!?!?

You need to stay away from the Rugger Bugger dirge and support a decent team. One that recruits its star players from picturesque and famous places such as Wee Waa.

Go Jamie Lyon!

Good match yesterday between France and Wales, it was spectacular to see two teams that wanted to attack and really play. The best team won in the spirit of the game (unlike us at Twickenham last week). Fair game to the Welsh, they had a great second half and never gave up. Now I'm rooting for the Irish to beat the Roastbeefs so we can have a Wales-Ireland Grand Slam decider, it should be a great game.

Sweet mother of Jesus... what a weekend! I'm convinced that the Welsh and French teams swapped shirts at half-time - as they certainly swapped styles of play (for the first 20 minutes at least). Could be quite a few Welsh boyos wearing the Lions shirt later on this year.

And the big French winger had the greatest haircut... or so I thought until I saw the Irish hooker's mullet.

The English looked considerably better than their first two games - and unfortunately the game will be judged on the referee's decisions, as England claim to be unlucky not to win. Personally, I believe the Irish were unlucky not to be 15 points up at half-time - they certainly dominated the first 30 minutes, yet could only come away with 'three pointers'. I can see the decision from both sides - but I was smiling yesterday evening after the game, so it's not hard to see where my support lies... and the English try was a brilliant use of NFL style blocking (I now see why Grewcock is in the team).

You rugger boys might want to turn away for this one. A bit too ruff for your lads.

Wow - don't the Wildcats suck... even the mighty Broncos are rated higher.

And on a different note - Willie Talau! Gold!

As for the second video - most of those tackles would now bring 3-4 game suspensions in the NRL... just ask Wiki.

Sad but true.

Fair play to the Welsh, they won the Grand Slam in style.
