Man, Alpha Protocol is steadily becoming my favorite RPG of the last decade the more I think about it. If not for The Witcher 2 and Dragon Age it would have it in the bag. Branching decision trees to an almost psychotic degree, the Bioware dialog wheel perfected and some of the funniest writing this side of Eric Wolpaw and Tim Schafer. It was such a shame that everyone, press especially, was so fixated on it not being Mass Effect: Modern Espionage.

I think i've played it about 8 times, with a 9th game saved at the start of the Greybox training segment. Had New Vegas not existed it would be my personal rpg favourite of this gen. Both games have some of the finest examples of player agency.

I still come across branches in the dialogue that I haven't seen/heard. And I still haven't gotten the achievement to have kill everyone you can in one play through.

You know, I've been eyeing up Alpha Protocol for a while - is there a recommended platform to get it on? Is it one of those games that really benefit from mods etc. on PC?

I had no complaints with my 360 copy. It's easily my favorite current-gen RPG outside of the first two Mass Effects.

a game so morally wrong but so much fun....Cant seem to get an online game going though....

Wow, were you right. UC3 is the first action game that actually asks the player to question the motivations of the protagonist, culminating in... nothing very special, at all. it also misses an opportunity to stage one of the most poignant character deaths in recent memory, but...

Still, this is the best Uncharted game by a mile, if only for the masterfully bungled attempt at something more thoughtful than "kill all the brown people you can get your mitts on." The last five chapters (excepting the ending) were so terrific.

I wonder if they ran out of money or time at the end of development.

Risen 2 (DON'T JUDGE ME!). Played the first one (and the first couple of Gothic games), and I liked the idea of a pirate rpg, so I picked it up. Entertaining, but looks last-gen, and has ZERO excuse for being as buggy as it is.

There's hate for Risen? I dug what I played of it a few months back, not enough to stick with it, but plan on going back someday. Hope to hear good things from you Singer on if the sequel is worth nabbing the first time it'll pop up for sale on steam...

I've been meaning to jump back into it for ages, but the deluge of really great stuff coming out lately has kept me away.

Tried out the 360 demo for Minecraft last night, and was surprised to find it gripping me far more than previous versions have. Whether it's 1600 points worth of gripping I'm not sure yet, but I'm intrigued. Might fire up the mobile version aagin and see after all the updates there's actually more to do.

I would like to play Minecraft..but I'm afraid I'll get so addicted to the game.

If you liked Risen you'll love his one, but yeah, I'd probably wait for a bargain down the line. It's been patched once, to good effect.

I'm just a sucker for these "you're not strong enough for this quest-cave-forest-maze, come back later" games. Once the world opens up (once you command your own ship), it's a blast.

You won't believe how many times I've heard this being treated as a design flaw rather than a valid gameplay choice.

Alpha Protocol- Steven Heck is one of my favorite supporting characters ever.

Yeah my budget for the next month is already spent but I'll nab it the first time I see it on sale, had to hold off not getting Starhawk too. Glad its getting better, and that the devs are on top of patching stuff.

I think my budget for the res of the year has adjusted thanks to Bioshock Infinite's move to 2013; so i guess after Diablo 3, my list includes Borderlands 2, Colonial Marines, resident Evil 6 and Persona 4 Arena.

Transformers: fall of Cybertron and Spec Ops: The Line are now maybes.

I am talking more about the combat. The combat in AP is all dice rolls. It may look like a third person shooter but you can aim at people's heads all day long and if your skill isn't high enough you won't get any headshots. One of the most widespread complaints about AP was "I am aiming straight at the guy's head from 10 feet away and I can't get a headshot."

After my...Disappointing experience with...Soul Calibur V, and Street Fighter X Tekken (Mainly because of my lack of interest in the...Tekken Side, after playing the game a few weeks.) the only other games I will be picking up this year are...Akai Katana (Cave Shooter), Madden 13, and the rumored...25th Anniversary Street Fighter Game!

I've had Alpha Protocol sitting on my shelf for months now. And I have Alan Wake and a review copy of Max Payne 3 to blow through in the next few weeks.

I'm coming dangerously close to overbooking my gaming dance card here.

I'd like to nominate Alpha Protocol for the July Game of the Month.

If I like it enough, maybe I could run through a second time with a different skill set.

I'll second that nom. I need to play through it again.

Just wrapped up Saudi Arabia and will probably hit up Moscow next. Focusing on Stealth, pistols, and SABOTAGE. I was not expecting that story turn to be where I am. Love that I have free reign to go and do stuff as I please. A not so linear approach compared to Deus Ex HR. I find myself wondering if doing things out of order will be harmful to the ease/rewards I'd get...I really hope those kinds of systems are built into the game. I hope hacking and lock picking get more manageable once I put more points into them. I can only use my emp bypass so many times before I have to get my hands dirty, but save them out of habit until I really need them. Wish Michael channeled his inner Han Solo when using the alarm off radio, instead of that combine sounding cue. Doing pretty decent with pure stealth and melee takedowns, once in awhile I let Michael unleash chainshot, going to put more points into that too.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Already I get the impression Darcy is a bad guy. If only for how that one Saudi mission played out. I go thoroughly stealthing that level without so much of an alarm peep, and upon completing that objective there's a swarm of badguys coming up my asshole. Found that very suspicious.

Only real question is why the heck did I wait so long to play this game, it's fucking awesome.

Damn near everything including the sequence you do each mission has an effect on the game. Don't bother trying to optimize your playthrough and do what you want. Regardless, let me give you some advice based on my game. I went through the areas pretty conventionally, without flying around the world and I was pretty shocked by finding out all the cool options that open up if you mess around more.

Finally am getting to play Mass Effect 3

Nah, just playing the game as I see fit. Nice playing on the pc, if only to get away from the checklist mentality I'd normally have for trying to nab cheevo's (seriously, it's a disease). My first instinct was to head to Taipei and stop the assassination mentioned, but what's a little spy action without heading to mother Russia for a trip.

The Moscow boss fight is the best thing. I found the game so much more interesting if you leave your foes alive, rather than executing them.

Dragon's Dogma: a Skyrim-sized game world that looks kinda great, and with some surprisingly positive word of mouth coming in from various places. Too bad it'll be overshadowed by Diablo III in every possible way.

Duke, if you hated street fighter x tekken and soulcalibur 5, I reccommend street fighter 3rd strike online and skullgirls on psn. Both seem to cater to the hardcore fighting audience from the little time I've played with them.

Man I sold back alpha protocol a few months back and all of you guys are makin me regret it. I remember thinking it was a few steps from greatness. I loved tr story and the characters and the rpg elements but I could never get past the abysmal gameplay. I felt like it would have played better on pc. And for the record I have never played mass effect.

I just got starhawk this past week. Pretty awesome, I love the gameplay and the semi rts elements and the weapons and such. Also the music and the world they created for it is just downright cool. It's a shooter that reminds me of the games I played when I was a kid where I was interested in a game just because it looked badass, unlike a lot of shooters nowadays which just feel like retreads.

Well I don't have a PC so Diablo III isn't on my cards. However Dragon's Dogma is and I am counting the days till release and it's arrival to my doorstep.

Okay seriously, this is the first positive feedback I've heard about Alpha Protocal after spending the months leading up to its release excited as all hell, only to see it shit on from a great height by all and sundry from reviews to fellow chewers, causing me to strike it from my playing list for (what I thought was) ever more.

Are you guys now saying its actually fucking awesome? Where were all of you when it came out and it was a god damn pile-on on the thing around here? I'm so confused!

This came out in that dark period where I moved to Canada for a year and a half. It was interesting digging up the old Alpha Protocol Thread and giving it a read. Things did take a turn on page 2 of the thread when the review scores and apparent dev disowning posts popped up. For me, the best $2 bucks I've ever spent, and it kind of feels criminal getting a great game for so little. I did make up for that though, gifted 10 copies to my friends when that sale happened, and my brother ended up keeping my original 360 purchase, he's played through it three times.

Nearly wrapped up Moscow now. Just have that last mission to go before I either head to Rome or Taipei. There are times where I do find myself fighting the combat system, trying to fire off shots from cover at swarms of enemies (especially in the Embassy mission) but I remember to use chainshot and sneak in for some melee takedowns. Stelios in the original thread was on the money, the complaints wouldn't be so loud if it were an old school isometric affair and not a gears or graw looking affair. And some of the original complaints about the graphics are kind of baffling, game looks stunning at times nowhere near approaching Halo 1 fidelity.

But what's said is said and that's in the past.

The funny thing is, I've been hearing people say for a while now that they love the game, yet when it was released it really did get the absolute living fuck slammed out of it from all quarters. However, the positive buzz I've heard about it over the last year-and-change has me very, very intrigued - it's become something of a cult game, and the people who love it make it sound amazing.

Well I like the idea of making it the July game club playthrough personally.

I was always a big cheerleader for AP. I could only assume that the people that hated it play games for reasons completely different than mine.

Alpha Protocol is pretty much the bees knees. I still bust out my PS3 copy and do a playthrough every now and then..I believe I'm on six? I had a really good time going rookie the first playthrough and veteran the second. Trevor is right too, it's more fun when you leave your "enemies" alive and see what business they get up to.

In other news I'm waiting on Dragon's Dogma, Diablo III is still a, "Hmmmm." for me. I'm not sure why, I played the goo out of the first two but for some reason Dogma is just calling to me.

I picked up an Xbox copy of the Witcher 2 for my new lady friend and there really isn't anything as awesome as a petite, tattooed filiipino girl screaming at a troll that she'll fuck'em up with her silver sword. I just fear for my tv and xbox controller.

Diabo III goes live tonight at midnight.

It's sitting in my hard drive right now, already downloaded.

Today is going to feel like a long slog.

Just got the last achievement for Bioshock and I loved the time difference between the last time I got one and when I started my recent playthrough. It's been five years since I played it! I'm making a conscious effort not to start playing anything new as I'll also be sucked into Diablo 3's world come tomorrow (pre-downloading was a great innovation).

Out of sympathy, I'll refrain from mentioning that I also got Diablo III for free.

And also a pony with Tyrael's wings for every WoW character I ever create. But mostly Diablo III for free.

Holy shit--that thread is brutal. All my friends panned Bioshock 2, though, and it came out as one of my favorite games I've played in the last few years. Fingers crossed, as AP is waiting for me on my doorstep as I type.

I just got...Akai Katana, a side scrolling shooter by Cave.  The game is for the Xbox 360.  It is a pretty good game.
