N.J. Casino to Fire Weightier Waitstaff

Fri Feb 18,12:29 AM ET

By JOHN CURRAN, Associated Press Writer

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has told cocktail servers if they pack on too many pounds, they'll get an unpaid suspension to lose the weight — or be fired.

The policy will apply to anyone gaining more than 7 percent of their body weight; weight gain related to pregnancy or a medical condition will be exempt, casino officials said. The company will pay to put the offender through a weight-loss program during the up-to-90-day suspension.

The policy was laid out in a letter to employees last week — and has infuriated some women's advocates.

"Women should not have to starve themselves just to keep their jobs," said Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group. "The policy places enormous stress on all the women and encourages eating disorders to reach a totally arbitrary goal."

The casino, whose edgy marketing themes and sexy accents have helped bowl over the competition since opening in July 2003, contends there's nothing wrong with setting weight limits for its 210 costumed beverage servers — 160 servers dubbed Borgata Babes and 50 other male and female bartenders.

A Borgata vice president, Cassie Fireman, said the policy clarifies existing appearance standards: that women servers should have "natural hourglass figures" and men "V-shaped torsos, broad shoulders and slim waists." No weight limits were ever set, however, she said.

"Our costumed beverage servers are a huge part of our marketing and our branding image," she said. "We feel it's fair, we feel it's legal, we feel it's what our customers have come to expect at Borgata."

Borgata Babes, who wear black, low-cut designer bustiers with crossing straps above the breasts, have appeared in pinup style photographs in the casino's calendar.

Borgata officials refused to allow cocktail servers to be interviewed Thursday; one who was asked her opinion of the weight limits declined to comment.

Local 54 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees union has filed a grievance.

Former Borgata Babe Lori Allen, 36, who resigned last month, said Borgata officials talked about weight limits long before they imposed them.

"It's going to cause girls to binge, purge, whatever," she said. "It's already causing stress."

Some gamblers don't think it's fair either.

"So what if they gain a little weight? They're serving drinks, they're smiling. All people are interested in is gambling, anyway," said Karen DiCaprio, 41, of Philadelphia, who was sitting at a roulette table.

I don't have a problem with this actually. These women are in a job where their looks are a large part of the business. As long as they are informed of this policy going into the job, there is nothing bad about the policy. If they don't like it, they can work somewhere else.

I don't agree with this, but haven't the Airlines done this to flight attendants for years?

I would question this policy in regards to airline attendants. Their main job is to ensure your safety, not to wear cute outfits and serve you drinks. A casino cocktail waitress's job is definitely about wearing sexy clothes and providing drinks to keep lonely men who will spend tons of money to keep looking at hot women while they gamble. I don't knwo if the 7% body fat is realistic, but if you are grossly overweight I think they have a right to say, lose the fat or your gone.

Airline attendants work in confined spaces, though. There are safety concerns, room clearance issues, etc. It makes much more sense to have weight regulations for that job than for some waitress at a casino.

admittedly, this new rule isn't bothering me too much. casino cocktail waitresses know going in that their looks are a major factor in their getting hired. buuuut, the 7% rule is a bit harsh, i personally am 120 pounds, so if i gained 8 pounds i'd get the boot? a bit steep, but if they know the rules going in then i dont see how they can complain.

and, i heard earlier today this rule is not just for the cocktail waitresses, its for ALL the servers, including those behind the gaming tables, male and female.

I can't wait until our world looks like the ending of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS.

So what if someone likes a fat body?

Post of the Day classic stuff.

I think this is a great way to encourage body issues and eating disorders, but whatever, they can always quit.

Those issues are already prevalent in society. One casino in Atlantic City isn't going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things. If you are going into a profession where your image is a crucial part of the job, you have to expect some resistance if you let your body go. This is true for all entertainers. The 7% body fat clause is kinda harsh though. That's a little unrealistic. But other than that, I don't see anything wrong with promoting a healthy body. The American population is overwhelmingly obese. I welcome any rules that encourage people to watch their weight. Of course, these same groups should be encouraging healthy weight loss through proper diet and exercise.

Rules to 'encourage' is one thing, but to give unpaid suspensions is a bit extream don't you think? Do they weigh you weekly, I wonder? Besides, it's Atlantic City, how much can they expect from their employees? Everybody knows the real talent goes to Vegas.

They're still trying to run a business none the less and if the overweight workers are turning off the customers then they'd have to do something about it. I suppose the unpaid suspension is a bit harsh but then again the employees know what will happen if they gain weight and the company said that they'ed pay for their weight loss program. And the weight gain restriction is in effect for all the staff not just the female servers. The male staff also has the restriction. I'm not against what they're doing but they should be forced to keep an eye on their employees and notice any signs of unhealthy weight loss, like a girl starving herself or making herself puke just keep her weight down.

And really, who would want to see these babes all tubbd up?

Doesn't bother me. It's not discrimination - it's lack of neccessary qualifications.

If a place is looking for sexy waitresses and their idea of sexy doesn't include 300 pound land monsters, sorry toots. Get a desk job.

Yeah, because the whole thing's all about cutting out obese women, obviously.

This is a known thing in the cocktail waitress industry here in Vegas.. To the point were if you are pregnent they will accomodate you with uniforms and everything up until birth, after that you have so many weeks to get back to your "hire wieght"...

They make good money and good tips and are expected to be pleaing on the eyes it's part of there job. Just like a male stripper cant get fat and nasty and expect to keep his pay.

I disagree. I flew recently for business and one of the flight attendants was about 5 feet tall and severly fat. She had to walk sideways down the isle.

As for the overweight waitresses, hire them. Just give them time....once they notice NO ONE is hitting on them and they are making absolutely ZERO money in tips they'll quit.

This country is getting ridiculously overweight and all these fat people are bitching because they're not treated fairly and that airline seats and movie theater seats are too small. Wah, wah. They should think more about their health - you don't see any old, fat people around do you?
