Project Snowblind

It's like Deux Ex, but more fighting and less RPG elements. Environments look good, a good amount of destructible stuff, character models are pretty weak though. The controls could probably be a little better, they just feel kind of loose for some reason. Fun so far (played for about an hour and a half), I like how big most of the battles have been, my guys are constantly running/hiding/shooting and generally doing something worthwhile, and I don't have to control them.

With the Gamestop trade system, I got this and had $9 extra to pre-order Republic Commandos and got a free Star Wars book.

So how much like Deus Ex is it, really? Or is it more like Deus Ex 1 or 2? I'll buy it in a heartbeat if it's like the first one.

Never played the first one, I was comparing to X-box version of the second. It has the nano-mods, but they don't upgrade, you can move/carry/stack boxes, but it doesn't seem all that necessary yet, you can hack computers and control turrets, but you don't need a skill to do it, it has the world destruction vibe, but not quite as interesting. It's like Invisible War light, with shit loads of bad guys.

This started out as a Deus Ex game, right? Like a kind of side story or something.

Yeah, I think it was originally supposed to be a squad based side story, but they scrapped any direct links at some point.

I've got a bunch of weapons, but the assault rifle you start the game with is just about the only thing I've needed so far. I've used my rocket launcher for a couple giant robots, but for the most part the bad guys just rush you. You would think that the shotgun would come in handy for that, but it fires so slow and is so freaking weak at even the slightest distance that it sucks. It doesn't help that while the enemy AI is dumb, their aim is ridiculoulsy good, so just a fast fire, high damage weapon is best.

I hope they move to some outdoor areas soon, because hallway after hallway is starting to suck.

It doesn't look like anyone is really interested in this, but if you are, I highly recommend renting before buying.

I might check this out after I finish that new Oddworld game.

yeah.....my plan is as follows:

1) Beat Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault

2) Buy this, beat it.

3) Buy Area 51, beat it.

4) Buy Doom 3, slip into bliss...

It's not terrible, but it's getting sold back, that's for damn sure.

I hope you aren't looking forward to doom 3 for the x-box (assuming you haven't played the pc version)...

I'm kinda thinking that Doom 3 (haven't played the PC) will have a Chronicles of Riddick feel, that the dark metal hallways will work with what the game is trying to do. Snowblind starts with a neat courtyard attck, then goes right into some really lazy design that doesn't fit with the "epic battle for the planet" thing they are trying to push on me. It worked in Deus Ex because you were one person trying to screw with different factions mostly through evidence gathering/sharing. Snowblind is a gun fight, nothing more, it needs to move to a larger scale.

The death animations suck, when you kill a guy he continues standing for a second or two, causing constant wasted ammo shooting at a corpse.

I'm still only maybe 4-6 hours into doom, for the pc. I don't know what hell will look like but so far nothing is at all that compelling to make me play it nonstop...after the wow factor of the new carmack engine wore off. I only manage maybe 2-3 battles before I turn it off to hop into half-life or far cry.

I really hope the new quake game does something...reading some previews that they've done for the game, developer speak...I hope it's a good sign that they're accepting/admitting Halo 1 & 2 (though never named, but taking some concepts) as an influence to their designs.

I read review for this (the March OXM I believe) and apparantly the single player campaign is only 6 hours. Still good fun though.

Apparantly multiplayer is where it's at.
