Final Fantasy developer heading to Microsoft

The man who wrote the original Final Fantasy (and a founding member of Square Co), Hironobu Sakaguchi is going to work for Microsoft.. namely to develope games for the next generation xbox console..

I just wrote a HUGE essay about this whole thing, but then accidentally hit back on the browser, then went forward only to find my msg cleared.. damn.. so i will keep it shorter this time as i havnt the patience to do that again..

Sakaguchi plans to "create something gamers can immerse themselves in and recall for a long time afterward by offering a new type of fun that only next-generation machines can provide.''

there are 20 million xbox's in homes worldwide, while there are 80 million ps2's..
Console wars are going to get really messy this time around because microsoft is making it their top priority to take the fight right to Japan.. and what better way than to "take" one of their best game developers the country has to offer..

My predictions...

Nintendo is going to decline as a console developer real fast in the midst of a brawl between Sony and Microsoft.. lets face it, Sony and Microsoft have a nearly limitless supply of money and resources.. when Nintendo struggled (and took a big gamble) to release the gamecube.. they wanted to gear it towards children cus they knew its going to be hard to compete.. they can be thanking god right about now that they own the handheld gaming industry.. but even then the Sony PSP blows the DS out of the water.. they knew this and thats why they rushed the DS out a few months before the PSP, which was a pretty smart move.

Sony and Nintendo have released plans and tentative specs for their next generation consoles.. and everyone is wondering why Microsoft hasnt yet.. thats because their feeling out the competition in order to figure out what hardware they have to better, and im quite sure they will succeed in doing so.

I would love to find out something about the upcoming Microsoft console, but no official technical reports are expected until well into spring.. will it have a hard drive? will it not? oh we'll see..

Nintendo used to own the industry, and has been bested.. now its only a matter of time before it joins its former adversary Sega in dropping out of console developement and sticking to making games..

Sony and Microsoft are POWERHOUSES that have the $$ and power to keep this going for centuries... and its not like either of them are playing to lose.. it will take some pretty ballsy tactics (like Microsoft grabbing Sakaguchi) to come out on top in the console gaming market...

The difference between Sega and Nintendo is Nintendo's taken less risks. Plus, Sega's never had the market share Nintendo's had. the games industry is a business, and at the end of the day, Nintendo has a lot of money. It's easy to think that because they're not in first place, that they don't have the resources or whatever to compete.

But Nintendo revitalized the entire global gaming industry back in the mid 80s, with the Famicom/NES. It was that big of a deal. And they did it with people like Miyamoto, who is still with the company as you know.

To compete and win the next 'war', they need to swallow their pride and start truly appealing to all ages. Certainly gameplay-wise, Nintendo games can be played by anyone. But content wise, they don't put out a lot of edgy stuff. They HAVE to change that. If Nintendo approaches the next system as they have with the previous 2 consoles, they've already lost.

They need to send nearly every character they have to the back seat. Mario and Link will always sell, but to who? To the fans who've been playing them for years. Nintendo needs more original content, along with more mature content.

Microsoft should've done something to get Dragon Quest exclusively on Xbox. That would've been unbelievable. If they did that, the Japanese territory would be a lock. That's the biggest game series in Japan, has been for years. They actually have a law in Japan that says Dragon Quest can only be released on Sundays or holidays, because of so many students cutting school and workers calling in sick, all because they want their copy of the latest release. But this is still a great move and I can only hope Sakaguchi reteams with Uematsu (who also left Square recently) and Amano.

I didnt know about that Dragon Quest law.. thats really funny!

I totally agree that Nintendo has to swallow its pride and start making an effort to appeal to everyone.. and dont get me wrong, im the last one wanting to see them fail.. i grew up on Mario!

This has to be moved to the videogame forum.

Interviews with Sakaguchi and Peter Moore:

Yoshitaka Amano (FF designer) and Nobuo Uematsu (FF composer) are working in both games too.

I like the idea of two RPGs, one "serious", and another "cute".

I agree. Nintendo is living in a bubble for years now. The Nintendo 64 failed and the Gamecube is third place in a 3-man race. They are only alive due to the Gameboys and the Nintendo fans. Their stock dropped significantly the last year, as did their profits. Casual gamers don´t give a shit about Nintendo anymore, and Nintendo continues to act with their "because we are Nintendo" attitude. They really believe that shit. Every console they release, they say "this controller/game/style will become standard in the industry" or something stupid like that. And yet, nothing does. Their consoles are only good for playing 1st-party games (Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, Wario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong), and they simply don´t care. It´s sad.

By the way, the PSP will outsell the DS by April or May - guaranteed. Weekly sales of the PSP are 50-60% larger than the DS sales. If they had been released at the same time, the PSP would be way, way ahead.

i love my ps2 and the only reason i have it is so i can continue playing final fantasy games. although i'm taking my sweet ass time about it (just about to finish 8). since this kat is now working for m$, what the hell's going to happen to ps and their final fantasy games? i haven't played the online version yet so i don't even know if its any good or that since its an online game whether this means that there'll be any newer versions.

Oh boy! I guess XBOX owners can finally get their grubby little hands on some silly overhyped RPGs!

But wait... they already have Fable for that... hrmmm, so I guess this doesn't really change anything now does it. Moving along.

If Nintendo ever fell Sony would get the big 3. *Link,Mario,Metroid* Just for the reason Sony knows how to make a great game

in Nintendo ever stopped producing consoles... i definitely believe that the "big 3" would be produced for sony AND microsoft... Nintendo would still make them, but they would OBVIOUSLY sell them to both buyers.. its more money and more distribution, it'd be stupid not to

I personally don't see Nintendo going 3rd party no matter what happens. Despite the relative lack of success of N64/Gamecube, Nintendo has MADE money on these systems(unlike, say, Microsoft, who JUST finally made a profit, just in time to have a massive power cord recall). I think they're perfectly content being number 3 in sales, as long as they're still selling. If they keep up the quality of their 1st party titles, they will.
Now, if Sony topples their handheld dominance, this could all be very different. This is where Nintendo makes the vast majority of their profits. Nintendo has made a lot of boneheaded desicions, everyone can agree on that, but they're a very proud company. If their only choice was to go 3rd party, I could see them simply leaving the game arena altogether, and taking Link, Samus and Mario with them.
My feeling on the whole thing is to enjoy most of what's out there nowadays, you simply have to own 2 systems(possibly all three). It's sad but true. I currently have a Gamecube and an Xbox, and chances are I'll own 2 systems next generation as well(when the prices drop a little). Chances are good the Revolution will be one of them.

Sakaguchi hasn't been more than a producer on the FF games for years. And now that the FF Tactics/Vagrant Story team is working on the flagship series, its just going to get better. Although for FFXIII if the main character is a guy, they need to make him manly, not a girl with a penis.

Tidus had a penis?
