"The Best of Youth" (Miramax's six-hours movie)

At 2004 Palm Springs International Film Festival , "The Best of Youth" (a six-hours epic) won the Audience Award, thumbing its nose at "The Barbarian Invasions" , "Infernal Affairs", "Good Bye, Lenin!" and a host of other hyped films.

Surprisly, Harvey (I cut the shit so it works!) Weinstein says that he love this movie so much, so he will release this movie UNCUT. If he love a movie that much, this movie should be very good.

Miramax will release this movie in two parts on 3/2/05(each 3 hours long). Unlucky, this movie is getting minimal publicity(mostly due to the battle between the Weinsteins and Disney?). This Sunday's NY times has a article to talk about it, though.

Six hours... sounds like a challenge, I'm in.

Yeah, I read about this in the Regal Cinema Art paper. I have to say I was very surprised to see the running time.

The more surprise thing is that Harvey Weinstein doesn't cut it. :P

BTW, it is Miramax's international trailer

That's not surprising at all. You just choose to hear about and latch onto those well-known disagreements that have been publicized. Weinstein doesn't cut everything, you know. For a while there, Miramax was a powerhouse, and those days are long gone.

That said, I do know for a fact that they publicized the hell out of this thing, almost one year ago, but it got shelved due to the onslaught of contract negotiations and not knowing what to do (as in publicity and selling it to the public, especially a fickle American one who'll see Diary of A Mad Black Woman in droves) with an almost 06 hour film.

Yes. Harvey Weinstein said that he wanted this movie to become another "City of God" at 2005 Oscar. It seems like that contract negotiations destorys every plans; this movie is getting minimal publicity.

Anyway, for a 6 hours foreign-language movie, getting US theatrical release is already a victory.

It's released in two parts. Or at least is was on its brief and succesful theatrical run in London.

It gets $7,490 at opening weekend($9,490 at 5-days opening)

It is a strong number because this movie only has 3 screenings per day.

I would say that showing this in two parts is the only feasible way of marketing it.
Hell, I don't know if I would care to spend Six Hours in a theater watching one movie without a break.
