Don't really know how many Chewers are gonna be into this game, but I'm picking up my copy this afternoon, figured I'd start a post-release thread. I'm gonna get the Xbox version.

probably nab the pc version in a couple of weeks...

Got it (X-box) last night, fun so far. Not perfect, but I can accept an above average FPS with a Star Wars theme. It kicks the shit out of Snowblind, and it's more fun than Oddworld.

To use the handgun (unlimited ammo) tap the D-pad down twice, I don't think it ever actually tells you that, and I played for awhile before realizing I had it.

Funny Halo like stuff - the Genosians are a skinny bug like thing that fly around real fast, the more powerful version are called Elites, and they carry a charge beam weapon that acts almost exactly like the beam gun from Halo.

I've played for a couple hours and the only weapon I've been able to pick up is the beam gun. It doesn't really matter because I have the auto rifle with snipe and armor piercing rounds, plus my pistol, but I thought it was a little strange anyway.

When fighting a large group of droids and a couple super droids, EMP grenade plus Vibroblade is great.

Man you run out of ammo quickly!

I picked up the Xbox version as well and also played a few hours. I'm amazed at how quickly things can go wrong if you don't tell the squad what to do. I guess I should clarify that I've never played a sqaud-based game before, either. Kinda makes me want to try a "for real" squad game in the future.

Any reccomendations on a decent squad game to try?

The latest Rainbow Six games.

Also Socom II is a nice choice if you happen to have a PS2 as well, although its not as complex as rainbox six can be with the route making and such.

Overall I though Republic Commando was a really fun game. It would have been nice had it been longer(the common complaint from what I hear) but it had some really good pacing and I enjoyed the banter between the squad. The later stages of the game had alot more variations of squad manuevers available than the start of the game so it definately kept you interested while trying out various combinations of tactics to kill the increasingly insane amount of stuff thrown at you.

FINALLY picked this up today, traded in X-Men: Legends and that Middle-Earth rpg and one other, basically got it without having to lay out any cash, and I'm looking forward to jumping in any second. I'm not expecting big things, just hoping for a fun Star Wars ride.

I'm about halfway through the second campaign, it's not great, but as a big SW fan I'm having fun with it. It just seems like some strange decisions were made that hold it back, a lot.

Small combat spoiler if you want it Singer
If you snipe the Super Battle Droids in the face, it knocks the armor off, and a couple follow up shots will kill them. You can also shoot off there arms and then take care of them however you want. I didn't realize this until long after it would have been really helpful.

It's very slick, and doesn't have that rush-finished feel that often blights Star Wars titles, but it's a pretty shallow affair - a nifty FPS dressed up with some basic squad stuff. Certainly, if you want a squad game that really makes you feel like the leader of a team then opt for Rainbow Six. If you want a shooter where you can point-and-click to make other characters do stuff, then this is just dandy.

Still not sure about giving the Commandos personality though. I can see why they've done it, as the game is based around one of the most faceless concepts in the SW universe - clones vs droids vs aliens who all look alike - but it seems weird to have them whooping and quipping as they take down Geonosian troops.

That's just a nitpick though. It's an above average shooter and, as usual, the Star Wars setting glosses over the smaller gameplay cracks.

When I pre-ordered a few weeks ago I got a free Star Wars novel that was supposed to kind of set the game up. It was the first SW book I'd ever read (it was free, back off, fuckers) and it actually did a fine job of showing how the RC's do all have their own personalities and individual characteristics. It made the cheering and jokes between the guys seem much more plausible.

I would compare it with Call of Duty to certain degrees. I love the furious combat set pieces.

Well, I'm up to some of the later Kashyyyk missions, and I'd say I'm well pleased with the game. It doesn't re-invent the wheel or anything, but it's gorgeous (I'm surprised no one's saying much about how damn good-looking much of this game is), plays more smoothly than Halo 2, and stuff blows up real good. I'm happy.
I am probably going to make this my intial X Box Game since I 'm getting one next week.
It's good news it is getting a favorable reception here. I don't trust the "Star Wars" fansites since will love any piece of shit that has the words "Lucasarts" and "Star Wars" on it.
That's true. But in all fairness to LucasArts the SW games have finally started to be good again for the first time in years. It appears they may have turned a corner with KOTOR.

If the ROTS tie-in game is even half decent, that will be the final sign that they have.

Not sure if you're talking frame rate or just general game play, but I'd have to disagree with both.

I've seen frame-rate issues in both games, but I loaded up Halo 2 for a comparison, and no matter how I adjusted the controller sensitivity, I was constantly moving the crosshair to the left or right of the target, and having to sidestep to get an accurate shot. In Republic Commando, I don't have that problem at all. I can zero right in on my target.

I like what Tycho from Penny Arcade has to say about RC today:

Quote:
I wrapped up Republic Commando on Sunday, and I remain absolutely entranced by it. I understand that Gabriel likes Star Wars a great deal, so him liking this game which is based on Star Wars is not exactly headline news. Usually I'm wary as soon as I see the license. I have to like a game despite that context, because I already kind of feel they're trying to get one over on me.

Here's the thing that you need to keep in mind. Star Wars: Republic Commando is an excellent Star Wars game, but it's a great game period. It makes the most of that license by doing something they are typically loath to do - put their own unique stamp on the setting. I've read in interviews that they were trying to show the universe from the perspective of a soldier and not a Jedi largely detached from this sort of warfare. I guess that's one way of putting it, but that doesn't account for vast scale differences and design touches that in my view amount to the most delicious canonical heresies. I mentioned Wookiees when I talked about it before, but it really can't be emphasized enough - download the PC demo to see it, but this is not some minor stylistic interpretation. From the perspective of your squad, a Wookiee is a gigantic, unstoppable monster. Trandoshans, lizardmen basically, are not the lithe men you recall in rubber suits. They're hideously muscled, with cruel faces and head ridges that form a treacherous geography. Straight away you'll see their taunting lope as they come at you, and if you cannot perceive how a person can run in a taunting, threatening way don't dismiss it as impossible. It's in Republic Commando.

That actually needs a paragraph all by itself. The animation in this game has so much character, passion, and nuance that I couldn't help but be invested. I mean it, I don't know what dark hole they kept these guys in, but once their eyes adjusted to the bright light they turned out movements that perfectly communicate the weight and substance of their Star Wars.

The sound has a lot of meat on it, as well - compelling original themes, top drawer sound design and great voicework. The acting from Temuera Morrison ("Jango Fett guy") is spot on, to the point that I practically demand they make a sequel just so he can huskily order me around. I have a feeling your mileage may vary as regards voices for your team, but for my part I got quite a few miles. There are raw game reasons why each character couldn't have the same voice, but there is a canonical explanation for why they might have different accents that even I am not comfortable relating in this space. Ask Gabe. He knows.

The tactical elements are meant to be extremely light, quick decisions about who to shoot at and via what means, so I'm not going to fault them for doing what they meant to do. This isn't R6 in space, let alone Full Spectrum Warrior, it's not even Brothers in Arms in space - though such interpretations of Star Wars would be much appreciated and obviously I'm down for that. I hope they're reading this, actually. You're already working with Pandemic! Full Spectrum Warrior in space. Get on it.

Must just be a difference in play style i guess, because the exact opposite is my problem. RC feels like my guy is shooting from the hip, and I always have to sidestep right to line up (more so when they are close up, which adds to the problem) while Halo I always felt deadly accurate with my shots.

Still, fun game, throwing a flash bang a big group of lizard guys and running around stabbing them is a blast.

Yeah, I love that the melee blade weapon is an actual killer, and not just a weapon of last resort.

I draw great satisfaction from slicing up a Trandoshan as he charges me. Then having to wait a moment for my visor wiper to clear the splatter blood away so that I might see again.

I Agree That KOTOR was the first really outstanding Star Wars game in some time.
I thought that "Battlefront" was a mixed bag, though.
My own litmus test for Lucasarts is going to be the upcoming new Star Wars Strategy game. I am really more of a strategy person then a action buff, (The squad leading is one of the things that attracts me to "Republic Commando") and Lucas arts attempts on a strategy game in the Star Wars Universe have been less then stellar. "Galactic Battlefields" came closest, but that was basically a mod for AOE2.
"Rebellion" was a great idea mishandled ans the less about "Force Commander" the better....
Battlefront is certainly hurt by its sparse (and that's being kind) single-player campaign with bunky AI, but it's one of the better Multiplayers around. I still have fun playing it on Xbox Live (and have yet to really encounter the supposed myriad of connection issues and lag times that some have reported).
LucasArts should have sold "Battlefront" as a online game, not the way they did which suggested a full bodied single player mode..which it did not have.
ALso, the PC version was released full of bugs, including a installation that was a nightmare. There is no excuse for a buggy install program. You get the feeling the PC Version was shoved out the door in a unfinished state to meet the deadline for the co release withe the OT DVD set.
Well, last night I picked up my X-Box and "Republic Commando" and the game looks impressive. I had a lot of problems adjusting from the Computer MOuse and Keyboard controls I am used to for Shooters to the X-Box Control pad, but time and experience should cure that.
I love killing droids...
